What funding does Europe offer for

    research?

    Many "instruments" support research...

...but the main one is Framework Programme

    Individual investigators in any discipline

Scientific excellence is the key criterion: high

    risk/high gain

Track record and potential of the PI

Starting Grants: between 2-7 years post-PhD

    Consolidator Grants: between 7-12 years

    post-PhD

    Advanced Grants: research leaders

Defining Belief and Identities in the Eastern Mediterranean: The Role of Interreligious Debate

and Interaction - 1.4M over 5 years - Dr Ioannis Papadogiannikis, University of Oxford

    (CORDIS link)

"This project seeks to recover the processes by which religious beliefs and identities were defined

through interreligious interaction and debate in the religious culture of a broader social base in the

eastern Mediterranean (6-8th centuries AD) through examination of a neglected, unconventional

corpus of medieval Greek, Syriac and Arabic literature"

The here and the hereafter in Islamic traditions - 978k over 4 years - Dr Christian Robert

Lange, University of Utrecht (CORDIS link)

"The aim of this project is to write a history of the Muslim paradise and hell. Researchers (PI, RF and

two doctoral researchers) will assess the extent to which Islamic traditions favour or reject a view

of human existence as directed toward the otherworld."

Wedding bells or bedding wells? Lexical and semantic influences on phoneme binding -

691k over 4 years - Dr Elizabeth Jeffries, University of York (CORDIS link)

"This multidisciplinary project examines the mechanisms in the mind and brain that underpin phoneme

binding. We explore how knowledge of the sounds and meanings of words prevents their phonemes

from recombining (so that errors such as bedding wells for wedding bells are avoided)."

    People: Marie Curie Actions

    Mobility and career development for

    "experienced researchers"

    Intra-European: focus on career

    development/mobility

    Incoming International: focus on knowledge

    transfer of senior international researchers

Career Integration Grants: focus on attractingtalent to EU

Calls for all of these open or will open in 2013

    Cooperation: SSH Theme

"Top-down": topics are specified in annual Work

    Programme

Transnational consortium (min 3 partners, 3 countries)

Mix of "small" projects, large networks and support actions

SSH.2013.5.1-1. Citizens' resilience in times of crisis

"...Which alternative forms of resilience do citizens develop at difficult times,

including strengthening of social and family networks and community

practices to foster solidarity when confronted by crises, changing lifestyles

towards more sustainable forms of consumption and production, developing

new artistic expressions as a form of resilience, moving abroad for short orlong periods, or, on the contrary, reducing their mobility, etc.."

SSH.2013.5.2-2. Transmitting and benefiting from cultural heritage in

    Europe

"[Research should investigate]...the ways in which young generations ofEuropeans appropriate, enrich, promote and transmit cultural heritage and

values in multicultural societies, including through the use of new

technologies. In this context, the role of cultural actors, infrastructures such

as cultural foundations or museums and their networking should be

investigated, as well as the interface between cultural heritage, behaviours

and identity in order to forge a sense of EU-belonging."
