When we started Open House, it was for anyone, young or old, who just wanted to drop in, have a coffee and make friends. Over time though we realised that if we catered for the children’s needs, the adults could relax and enjoy themselves too, so we became a mother and toddler group.

Christine Worsfold, Linda Connelly, Maureen Carcas (who’s since moved to Scotland) and I all met through the church. We started the group to be of service to the people in Findon valley and beyond, and lots of mums say they met their best friend here.

It’s nice sharing and being there for people. It’s like a big family really. And because as leaders we are all very hands on, the parents are free to chat and socialise, although the children remain the parents’ responsibility while they’re here.

The group meets every Tuesday in term-time between 10.30am and 12 noon, and sometimes we can have up to 60 parents and children in here, so it can get quite noisy! We have a large lounge with toys and baby area, an enclosed outdoor play area, quiet puzzle / book room and a different craft in the craft room each week.

It’s lovely to see the children grow up, especially if they remember who we are. However, it does make us feel quite old when they come back to visit us as teenagers!

We run Open House as a church group, so although everyone is welcome, we have a short service for the kids, special events at Christmas and Easter and we sing Christian songs as well as nursery rhymes.

Any parent, carer or grandparent can come along with their children from nought to school age. Entry is 50p, which includes refreshments.

Feed the birds with Squirrel BanLocal business man Stephen Vincent was inspired by his mum to invent a bird food that squirrels wont eat

Are you one of the many people that are driven mad by squirrels robbing the bird food and breaking the bird feeders? We all know there are squirrel proof bird feeders but we also know a lot of them do not work very well in either deterring the squirrels or attracting the birds.

Squirrel Ban was invented by Stephen Vincent of Garden Pride Marketing, he was made aware of the importance of the need for this product by his mum. Her garden backs onto the woods and is constantly raided by the squirrels. Last year we had the news story of the man given a criminal record after drowning a squirrel that kept attacking his bird feeders and it was at this point that Stephen was ‘ordered’ by his mum to find a better way. Stephen then trawled the market place for products and advice and discovered that there was nothing on the market in the UK that was indeed a squirrel proof food but the best advice from the RSPB was to sprinkle your bird food with cayenne pepper. This and other DIY methods were found to have very limited success.

Stephen is a trained engineer with his mum’s words ringing in his ears “that there must be a better way”, set about finding one. Indeed a better way was found and has now been patented and is on sale at Garden Xtras Chartwell House, Chartwell Road, Lancing Industrial Estate, Lancing, West Sussex BN158TY 01903 756565 www.gardenxtras.com

Daffodils bring the start of Spring

March 1st St David’s day means Daffodils (Narcissus). Daffodils are classified into 13 divisions differentiated mainly by flower type, habit, shape, flowering time and scent. For example division 7 the ‘Jonquilla’ Narcissi are scented and have 3-5 flowers on a stem whereas division 9 the ‘Poeticus’ have white petals with contrasting centres mostly seen colonising grassland. Division 1 are the more common yellow Trumpet flowers and my favourite the dwarf ‘Tete a Tete in division 12 are termed miscellaneous. These look best in rock garden or gravel settings as well as in wide shallow pots.

The bulbs are best planted at the end of September between 2 to 3 times the depth of the bulb below ground. After flowering, dead head and in dry conditions, water. It is best to leave them to wither untouched as this allows the sun on the green stems to replenish the bulb by photosynthesis. Bulbs come up ‘blind’ (no flower) next year if this does not happen. The optimum is to leave them 6 weeks after flowering. So positioning is key. Bulbs are best in groups of at least 5 or 7 and will regenerate. Choose a patch in an area where they can be left naturally and dig up any individuals that self- seed in borders. This keeps displays from becoming overwhelming. Daffodils can be planted in groups close to deciduous trees as they flower early in the sun before the tree leaf canopy emerges.

Garden Work for March:Pruning: Summer flowering Clematis, Shrub roses, Cornus and Salix (down to ground)Sow: Summer flowering bulbsEarly potatoes already chitted (from mid-march), Jerusalem Artichokes

Get some veg and salad off to an early start on windowsill or cloche. Divide: Herbaceous perennials. (Good time to reorganise by dividing, reducing and clearing unwanted invaders, then mulch.) Enjoy: Many shrubs and a few trees flower at this time including woodland varieties. Look out for: Acacia dealbata (Mimosa) Camellia, Clematis armandii, Daphne (very scented), Forsythia, Ribes, Viburnum bodnatense Prepare: This has been the driest winter we have experienced in my 30 years gardening so it may be

advisable to prepare for shortages with water butts and irrigation systems.

Cheers MumEssentially Worthing talks to Janice Fraser, Tourism Development and Marketing Officer for Adur and Worthing Councils, about her role in setting up the first Adur and Worthing Food and Drink Festival.

What is your role in organising the festival? My job is to promote the area as a visitor destination and assist in improving what is on offer for tourists. I’m the Festival Event Co-ordinator, but I’m certainly not doing it all alone.

Who decided to bring the first Food and Drink Festival to Adur and Worthing? The original idea came from our Chief Executive, Peter Latham. We have a fantastic selection of food and drink businesses locally. The festival will give them all an opportunity to show off their products and services to visitors and residents alike.

When and where will the festival take place? The festival starts on the 7 July and will run until 15 July, across the whole of Adur and Worthing.

What sort of events will there be?An Open Air Festival launches in Steyne Gardens and the Live Food Show in South Street Square, Worthing Saturday 7 July, 10am - 5pm, Sunday 8 July, 10 am - 4pm. South Street Square will host a live stage and demonstration kitchen whilst Steyne Gardens will give visitors a chance to taste, sample and buy from a selection of food and drink suppliers and we are planning a Beer Festival and a Great British Bake Off.

Can kids get involved? Oh yes, absolutely! We want to create a festival that appeals to all ages. Biscuit or cup cake decorating and making your own pasta are just two of the ideas that have been mentioned to me so far.

Will all the businesses taking a stand at the open air festival be local? We are hopeful that we will have enough interest from Worthing and Adur businesses to fill the 40 pitches available..

The live food show sounds like fun. What will be happening on stage? There will be a demonstration kitchen on the stage, so we would encourage local chefs to demonstrate making their speciality dishes, and we’re planning competitions and prizes.

How much is the entry fee for visitors? The open air events will be free.

How can we get more information about the festival? For more information about the festival or to take part in the event, go to www.visitworthing.co.uk.

Breaking the Curse of the Short Term LeaseJulian Wilkins can help you get a longer lease at the lowest cost

Short unexpired lease terms below 80 years on residential properties can affect saleability and value; and make obtaining a mortgage almost impossible. Consequently, many leaseholders approach their freeholders for lease extensions,

but are typically offered unfavourable terms with short extensions, high premiums and high ground rents.

Kids’ Diary - March

Make Mother’s Day!

Made in Minutes Muffins This recipe is super easy and produces 12 scrumptious muffins for you to enjoy. You don’t even need to weigh anything if you don’t want, just use a small tumbler (250ml) and cutlery from the drawer. For those who wish to be precise, metric measures are included. Don’t forget to wash your hands and find everything you need before you begin!

Ingredients 2 cups (300g) of self-raising flour1 cup (200g) of caster sugar2 teaspoons (10g) of baking powderPinch of salt2 free range eggs½ cup (125ml) of vegetable oil1 teaspoon (5ml) of vanilla essence½ cup (125ml) of milk1 cup of filling. Choose from: chocolate chips, raisins, frozen berries or what you love!

Method Turn on your oven to 190/Gas 5. Fill a muffin tin with 12 cases.

In a large bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together. In a small bowl, mix all the wet ingredients. Then, simply mix the wet into the dry with a wooden spoon until all nicely combined. (Don’t overdo this bit.) Add one cup filling and stir in.

Using a dessert spoon, scoop the mix into the waiting cases. Pop them in the centre of the oven for about 20 minutes or until well risen and golden on top. Allow to cool for a few minutes before lifting out onto a wire rack. They taste delicious warm.

Mums do so much for us that it’s nice to do something lovely in return. So why not say ‘thank you’ with these delicious muffins?

Windlesham established in 1837, is one of the country’s leading and oldest IAPS co-educational prep day and boarding schools for boys and girls aged 4-13 with a history of being in the forefront of educational development. Academic excellence and success are a high priority amidst a secure, warm, caring, family atmosphere. Windlesham is a warm and open school, recognising and encouraging the talents of each individual child, enabling them to thrive in their own way, building confidence and forging friendships for life.

Nestled in 60 glorious acres on the South Downs, Windlesham not only offers exceptional learning and teaching opportunities but magnificent architecture, stunning grounds, outstanding facilities including three science laboratories, a fully equipped music department, a new library situated at the heart of the school, dance studio, theatre, chapel, sports hall, an indoor swimming pool as well as wonderful playing fields, which have been lovingly tended for over 70 years, an astro turf pitch, its own nine hole golf course, and eight tennis courts. In addition there is an extensive Design Centre and state of the art ICT facilities throughout the school which includes four computer suites.

Windlesham’ s philosophy, and respect for the unique personality, gives all Windlesham pupils the freedom to achieve their full potential, whether that is an academic, sporting, art or music scholarship or the ability to confidently assimilate the

national curriculum. One of the aims of the school is to give the pupils the opportunity to discover where their individual talents lie and then how to use those talents to the full. The confidence gained from doing something really well is then transferred to other areas of the pupil’s life and learning.

‘The school excels in its approach to offer all children an outstanding variety of activities and continues to strengthen and expand the activities programme after school and at the weekends’ 2010 Ofsted Report – Outstanding

’Pupils thrive in the atmosphere of hard work, enjoyment and effort. They make good progress. Their attitude to their work is good

and they take pride, both in their own achievements and the successes of others’ ISI Report 2011.

So, in the main, here in Worthing we were spared the February snow! I know a lot of little kids (and some of the big kids too!) were a bit disappointed not to be able get another use out of last year’s sledge or get a sneaky day off school. I even heard the caretaker at Durrington High was a bit disappointed not to be able to use ‘Doug’ the snowplough, who was bought last year to

ensure that no one escapes a day’s education, regardless of the weather!

I’ve seen some of the white stuff in High Salvington and Findon and even ventured to give the puppy his first taste of snow at Chanctonbury Ring, but generally, when you look at the thick coverings elsewhere in Sussex and around the country, we got away Scot free!

It means, thankfully, we can start to look forward to spring, rather than be dragged back into the land of Christmas cards.

With spring there is always such optimism as we anticipate the endless possibilities of the summer ahead, the balmy warm evenings, the trips to the beach with a naughty ice cream on the pier and to the town and village festivals and carnivals that we boast so extensively in our area.

We’ve got the Olympics to looks forward to this year too (including, if rumours are to be believed, the shooting heading to Findon?) plus we’ve even been treated to an extra bank holiday in June as we celebrate the Queens Jubilee.

What’s not to be happy about? No one ever pictures it will be a cold, wet summer. We all have high hopes of soaring temperatures, clear blue skies and endless sunshine, and it’s this collective optimism that makes spring the most encouraging time of the year.

So with our positivity already kick started by the lack of snow last month, let the trees go green, let the daffodils bloom and let the bar-be-ques replace the cut price sledges in stores everywhere!

I didn’t vote Conservative in the last election- or in any election- but I’m starting to feel a slight pang of guilt. My recent material for this slot has been inspired by the Prime Minister himself.

Is anyone surprised that the overconsumption of alcohol has become such a problem in modern Britain? We in A&E are not. Putting a figure on it can’t be easy but someone has and come up with £3bn, which sounds plausible as the cost to the NHS. But what about the wider ‘cost’ to families, employers and society as a whole. How do you quantify that?

All I know is that the problem is ingrained, endemic and largely denied. It’s not just the obvious and immediate consequences of violence, aggression and antisocial behaviour on the streets or the very visible sharp end of the problem and the pressures on emergency Services. More insidious than that are the ‘civilised’ or so-called ‘functioning’ alcoholics who celebrate the end of every ordinary day with a bottle, or even two of a nice claret. The liver is a forgiving, if not discriminating organ and it can’t tell the difference between a blue alcopop and a chateauneuf. The respective liver failures, alcohol related diseases and shattered lives of the jobseeker, scaffolder and company director will all oddly ressemble each other. The liver is not a snob.

When I was a kid- and no, it wasn’t just after the War- most people did not drink daily. A bottle of wine was reserved for an occasion, or the weekend. Now it seems many people do drink daily, and not just a small glass with dinner. It has become more of a coping mechanism than a pleasure.

Alcohol mis and over-use needs to be addressed aggressively, just as smoking was. Of course no one ever crashed a car, beat their wife or brawled in the street because they’d smoked too much.

Alcohol is a luxury product .It is not like bread, milk or children’s shoes. Therefore there is scope to make it much more expensive to choose to drink to excess and good evidence that this has a direct impact on consumption. All the middle-class twittering that it will unfairly penalise the ‘responsible’ drinker is nonsense. If you are really drinking that responsibly, even an extra pound or two on a bottle of wine will make a negligible difference.

As for the so-called ‘drunk tanks’ or ‘booze buses’, designed to sweep up and look after those found incapacitated in the street,

I could not disagree more. This simply gives carte blanche to go out and abandon all personal responsibility in the knowledge that should you become separated from your wits, friends, clothes and phone, someone will gather you up until you recover all or some of the above.Medically this is unsafe and frought with potential problems and socially its a cop-out. It’s time for us all to take a good long hard look in the cellar, count up the units, and the bottles in the hedge and shake ourselves out of this complacency. Before it’s too late. The liver is forgiving, but once beyond the point of no return, there is no going back.
