Longer duration events tend toward full cycle use Long, frequent events require high cycle life Shorter duration events may be satisfied with partial cycles, (minimizing wear and tear on cycle life) Systems that perform multiple functions in parallel or in concert, tend toward high cycle life
Not all uses are equal
“When evaluating whether and what type of storage system they should install, many customers only
look at the initial cost of the system — the first cost or cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Such thinking fails to
account for other factors that impact overall system cost, known as the levelized cost of energy (LCOE),
which factors in the system’s useful life, operating and maintenance costs, round-trip efficiency, and
residual value.”
Tim Hennessey, Calculating the True Cost of Energy Storage

Battery Performance Parameters
Nominal kWh The original manufacturer stated kWh storage capacity
Depth-of-discharge (DOD) / C-Rate
The percentage of the nominal kWh / the nominal kW(power) that is charged and discharged
during active operation
Cycle One complete charge and discharge at some stated depth-of-discharge
Roundtrip efficiency The efficiency coefficient representing the ratio electricity discharged from the battery over the
electricity charged into the battery (<100%)
Useable kWh The total kWh useable during normal operation where some portion of the nominal kWh is
reserved to protect against over/under voltage or to preserve cycle life
Cycle-life / Calendar Life The approximate number cycles / years until the storage kWh capacity degrades below the nominal
kWh. Pay attention to this because this is a moving target.
Kokam Provides Various Battery Technology
to Meet Customer’s Load Profile
High energy density (130 ~ 200Wh/kg): Up to 3.4MWh of batteries can be stored in a 40ft container
Competitive Price: The NMC cells have a comparative advantage in terms of price, considering it’s
superior performance, reliability and safety features.
Advantages
Lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC)
High specific power: 4C-rate continuous and 8 C-rate peak charge & discharge operation
High round trip efficiency (RTE): >95%.
Long cycle life: >12,000 cycles @ 100% DoD, 1C charge & discharge operating conditions.
Extremely Safe: A thermal runaway event is significantly less likely to occur in LTO cells. LTO cells can
also be re-operated after an event of an over-discharge, unlike conventional graphite based Li-Ion cells.
This feature enables the user to operate the battery cells under extreme environmental and operational
conditions.
Wide Range of Operation: -30 ~ 60degC.
The advantages of the LTO cells: Originates from the Anode side of the battery cell. Whereas the Anode
side of ordinary Li-Ion cells are made up of Graphite, the Anode side of the LTO cell is composed of LTO.
Advantages
Lithium titanate (LTO)
This hybrid type cell has incorporated the advantages of both NMC and LTO cells in one cell. It is
suitable for extremely volatile and dynamic operational conditions. The high power, energy and
safety features allow the NANO cells to be flexibly applied in various applications.
