munaux a, du-rant des siècles, été une zone de pâturage où se côtoyaient vaches, chè-vres et mou-tons. À proximité se pratiquaient l’extraction et la taille des pierres.
Ces différentes activités ont été a b a n -données dans les années 1950-1960. Les sols les plus fertiles ont alors été mis en culture : cé-réales, fourrage, colza…
Les prairies sèches, qui constituaient sa richesse écologique, ont alors naturelle-ment évolué vers le boisement. La gestion actuelle des Communaux vise à restaurer ce milieu naturel et à favori-ser une plus grande biodiversité.

OiseauxUne quaran-taine d’espè-ces d’oiseaux nichent ici. Près d’une quinzai-ne d’autres l ’u t i l i s e n t p o n c t u e l -lement comme site d’alimen-tation et de re-pos.
Des lapins, des renards, des san-g l i e r s , des chevreuils, ainsi que des serpents, des lézards et un amphibien rare (la rainette ver-te)… y ont élu domicile.
La richesse du lieu tient éga-lement à la présence de nombreux in-vertébrés, dont une cinquan-taine d’espèces de papillons, et de nombreux coléoptères et insectes.

Dalles calcairesLe sol est consti-tué d’une très épaisse cou-che de calcaire, r e c o u v e r t e d’une fi ne pellicule de terre. Par endroits, cette couche affl eure sous forme de dalles de pierre.
De gros blocs rocheux, c o m m e la Pierre du Bon Dieu et la Pierre du Dia-ble, traces de l’avancée d’un ancien glacier préalpin, ryth-ment le pay-sage.
Pas d’eau aux Co mmunau x ! Seules quel-ques « criesses » (crevasse entre deux blocs de roches) permet-tent aux racines d’aller chercher un peu d’hu-midité au plus profond du sol.

Seules quel-ques plantes de petite taille ont pu s’adapter pour survivre sur la fi ne couche de terre aride qui recouvre la roche. Elles for-ment un tapis végétal ras.
À proximité des dalles, les p r a i r i e s s è c h e s , et leurs grami-nées caractéris-tiques, abritent de nombreux végétaux rares, dont une di-zaine d’espèces d’orchidées.
Ce milieu est fra-gile : sans l’entretien autrefois assuré par les animaux d’éle-vage, les prairies sèches se couvrent naturellement de ronces, puis d’arbus-tes. La moitié du site est ainsi aujourd’hui recouverte de bois et de landes.
