Error 3194 or "3194" on iTunes is an error code used by Apple to identify communication problem with the Apple update server. These communication problem can be caused by anything from a faulty internet connection to the device current OS firmware. There are various situations where this error is faced.

This hub lists all the 5 situations where there is a chance of causing the iTunes error 3194.

Page 2: Error 3194

Situation 1: An outdated iTunes software.

Yes it is true, an outdated or old iTunes software causes communication issues with the update server, what you need to do is update your device to the latest version of iTunes. You can download it from the internet with a simple Google search for "iTunes" .

Solution: Update your iTunes software to the latest version.

Page 3: Error 3194

Situation 2: Antivirus or Firewall blocking the iTunes software.

If there are antivirus or firewall programs installed on your computer, make sure they are blocking iTunes from connecting to the internet. Firewall programs like the Tinywall firewall or the Comodo firewall have a history of blocking the iTunes software. If you don't know how to do it, just uninstall the antivirus or Firewall program.

Sometimes uninstalling these security programs will get tricky and will not uninstall properly and will be causing issues after their uninstallations. What you need to do is use a uninstall tool to uninstall these security programs. There are tools like the Revo uninstaller, Ashampoo uninstaller which can get the job done but you need good knowledge of what are being uninstalled.

Page 4: Error 3194

The best tool i recommend is "Uninstall Tool" it is the best software which will remove all the traces of the installed programs. I have used a lot of software but this tool is the one worked for me.

Solution : Unblock iTunes or Uninstall Antivirus

Situation 3: Modified Hosts file blocking connection to gs.apple.com

Page 5: Error 3194

This is only valid for jailbroken device users. If your device is jailbroken and you are using Cydia to upgrade or downgrade your device then the Hosts file in your computer will be modified by programs like TinyUmbrella which enables the upgrade or downgrade possible. You need to remove the gs.apple.com from the Hosts file. You can do this by adding a # symbol before the address ,see the screenshots below.

Solution: Fix the Hosts file to its true state.

TinyUmbrella and the Hosts file.

Lets us say you want to restore your iPhone to the original firmware provided by Apple and you want to get rid of your jailbreak. Then there is a chance that you will get error message. The problem is mainly caused by the TinyUmbrella software which helps you to downgrade your jailbroken device.

The problem with TinyUmbrella is that when you start the software for the first time on your PC, it will modify the HOSTS file inorder for the downgrade to work. Without modifying the hosts file, you will not be able to downgrade your jailbroken device. Normally if you want to upgrade or downgrade your iPhone , the iTunes software connects to the Apple update servers which is at gs.apple.com andgrands the permission to upgrade or downgrade the device. What TinyUmbrella does is that it changes the ip address of the Apple update servers in the Hosts file to "74.208.10.249" this is not the Apple update address this is the server address of Cydia. This server make iTunes think it is Apple and grands permission to downgrade the device.

So when you you try to update your device using original Apple firmware, iTunes will connect to the Cydia server and you will get error message. What you need to do is remove the Cydia server address from the Hosts file, then it will connect to the Apple update address.

You can do this in TinyUmbrella also.Start TinyUmbrella and go to the "Advanced" tab, you can see the "Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit" setting. Uncheck that setting and close TinyUmbrella. Now the software won't set the Hosts file to Cydia server address and iTunes will works as Normally it will connect to the Apple server.

But sometimes unchecking the setting on TinyUmbrella won't work then you have to change the Hosts file manually as i have explained earlier.

How to Fix Hosts file on Windows?

1. Go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc

2. Copy the "hosts" file to your desktop

3. Open it using Notepad.

4. Look for the entry: 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com and change it to

# 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Page 6: Error 3194

If you can't edit the Hosts file from the above location, copy the Hosts file to your desktop and open it and edit using notepad and save it. You should take care not to save it as a text file instead of the Hosts file. Just delete the .txt extension after the Hosts file when saving it. Then copy the new Hosts file and paste it in the true location of the Hosts file. You will be asked to replace the original Hosts file, you need to click "yes" to allow the replacement.

You can see in the above picture , the opened Hosts file and the ip address of Cydia associated with the Apple update server address .

1. Start OS X Terminal (Applications ▸ Utilities)

2. Type the command:

sudo nano / etc / hosts

3. Enter your password.

4. Look for the entry: 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com and change it to

# 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

5. Save the change with the key combination Control + O followed by Enter.

6. Exit the nano editor by using Control + X.

Page 9: Error 3194

Situation 4: You are trying to downgrade your device to iOS versions to 6.1.3 or iOS 6.1.4

This situation is valid for both Jailbroken and non Jailbroken devices. If your device is having iOS version 7 or greater and you are trying to downgrade it to iOS versions 6.1.3 or 6.1.4, you will be blocked with this error.

There is a story behind this situation. Apple releases new iOS versions and tempts users to update their devices to the latest versions by provideing bug fixes and new features, there is also another side to this update seduction made by Apple it is to prevent Jailbraking made on the iOS devices.

Page 10: Error 3194

For example let us assume you are having iOS version 6 , Apple releases the iOS 7 and you decide to update your device to iOS 7 and made the decision. Now your device is having iOS version 7 and asume that it is released just before 1 month you have madeyour update. Then there is no way you will be able to Jailbreak it for sometime unless a Jailbreak is released which takes time. But you there is a chance that you can downgrade your device to iOS 6 or any other versions in which Jailbreak is possible, Apple prevented this by introducing SHSH BLOBS or simply saying signatures of approval made by Apple to allow the process of downgrading , upgrading or restoring.

Apple only supports providing signature to the latest iOS versions released by them.So if you are trying to downgrade your device to iOS versions 6.1.3 or 6.1.4 then you will not be able to do it and you will be faced with this 3194 error which in this case means that the server didn't approve the process which resulted in a communication problem.

Can i download these SHSH BLOBS from the internet and downgrade the device?

No you will not be able to do that since these SHSH BLOBS are device specific means unique to your device. SO you can't use something downloaded from the internet or backup made by your friend to downgrade your device.

I have seen devices downgraded to older versions, how is that possible then?

That is possible if your device is an iPhone 4 and have already made a backup of your older iOS versions which you want to downgrade to and you also have the backup of these signature or SHSH BLOBS in your computer. Then there are tools like the iFaith or the TinUmbrella which can solve this situation. If your device is an iPhone 4 go on to situation 5 where the downgrading is explained.

Solution: Stop downgrading your device there is no solution.

Page 11: Error 3194

Situation 5: Your device is a Jailbroken iPhone 4.

This situation is valid only for an iPhone 4 which is Jailbroken, you can downgrade your device to older versions with a tool called iFaith.

The below are the requirements for the process.

1. You need to have iTunes software of version 11.0.5 or older than the 11.0.5 . Google for older versions of Google like "iTunes 11.0.5 "2. Uninstall the current Itunes and install the older one if you are having the new iTunes.

Page 12: Error 3194

3. The next thing you need to downgrade your device as i told earler is the SHSH blob .4. If your device is Jailbroken by you or any of your friends then you can get the SHSH blob from their computer oryour computer. If you bought the device from ebay or someone else there is no way you can get the SHSH blob you can stop here. Those who made the Jailbreak go onto step 5.5. Download iFaith tool. Google for "iFaith tool"6. Install iFaith, in Ifaith go for "Show Available SHSH Caches on Server" then go on to "Show list of available SHSH blobs on TSS server" which will provide you available blobs you can download. Select a blob you want to download and save it in your computer.

Now that you have older version of the iTunes, the SHSH blob file and the iFaith tool, we can go on to the downgrading process which solves the error 3194.

1. Backup your iPhone 4 as usual .2. Then you need to connect the iPhone 4 to the PC and not a Mac.3. What we are going to do next is building a custom firmware of the older iOS version that you want to downgrade to by using the iFaith tool. What this iFaith tool does is that it injects the SHSH blob to the normal firmware and creates a iOS firmware with an inbuilt signature on it which helps to bypass the Apple update server.4. Start the iFaith tool, select the "Build signed IPSW w/ blobs" option which enables us to look for downloaded SHSH blob and select it.5. If you are not having the iOS version which you want then download it using the iFaith tool using the "‘Download it for me" option in the iFaith tool which downloads the firmware needed for building the custom firmware.6. After the firmware download has completed, go for the "build IPSW" option which creates the signed firmware.

Now that we got the custom firmware, we can use iTunes to downgrade the device.

What should be kept in mind is that the Hosts file should point to Cydia servers instead of Apple update servers. If it is towards Apple update servers, you will get error again.

To downgrade the device you need to put the device in the DFU mode or the "Device Firmware Update Mode" Follow the steps to do it.

1. Connect your device to the iFaith tool.2. Holding down the sleep button power off your device.3. Press start in iFaith and follow the onscreen instuctions to put the device in the DFU mode.4. Now that it is in DFU mode, connect the device to iTunes, iTunes will detect the device in DFU mode.5. Now restore the device in iTunes by holding down the Shift button and press the "Restore iPhone " option and select the "IPSW" file or the custom firmware that we created.

Page 13: Error 3194

If you did everything as per the instructions, you won't be having any problem downgrading your device.

tip: always keep coffee with you while doing it and make sure you don't get depressed.

Apple iTunes and the Common Errors.

Apple iTunes errors are the errors faced by users while upgrading or downgrading the operating system of the Apple devices including the iPhone, iPad, iPod etc. Most of the errors are software problems but some errors are caused by a damaged battery of the device etc.

Page 14: Error 3194

Errors like the 3194,1013 etc are faced by users with a jailbroken device in most situations. These errors are caused by the software used for downgrading or upgrading the jailbroken devices. TinyUmbrella for example is one of those software which helps to downgrade these jailbroken devices. This software modifies the Hosts file which results in the malfunction of iTunes software leading to errors 3194, 1013 etc.

Other errors are caused by a Firewall or Antivirus blocking the iTunes software which results in the disability to communicate with the update servers and results in errors such as error 2

Error 3194 is the error faced by the majority of users as per the poll on this Hub, so this hub is dedicated to error 3194..

List of common iTunes errors and Fix

So you tried to update or restore your iPhone / iPod / iPad but you get an iTunes error, what should you do? Well it depends on the error message you are receiving, the solution varies according to the error message.

Error 2

This error occurs when you try to restore your device to a current or old firmware which is provided by Apple. This error is a common problem faced by all applications, error caused by a firewall block. If you get this error, make sure your firewall or antivirus is not blocking iTunes. You can add iTunes to the exceptions list of firewall or turn off your firewall / antivirus temporarily.

Error 21

This error is usually found when restoring the custom OS in the DFU mode.If you get this error then it is caused by an incorrect DFU mode. Check to see if you put your device in DFU mode correctly. There is a tool called iREB which can easy fix this by putting the device in DFU mode. iREB software automatically puts the device in DFU mode and you don't need to do it manually.

Error 29

Page 15: Error 3194

This error in most cases is caused by a bad battery. You may try and replace the battery of your device.

Error 39

The cause for this error is not very clear, fortunately the solution is known.

Connect your iDevice to your PC / Mac and copy all the pictures on your device to your PC / Mac.

Have you done this? if then go to the iTunes software in PC/Mac and go to the Photos tab, click the check mark.

You will be asked if you want to remove all your photos, press yes. Now check your iPhone to see if all the pictures are actually gone.

If if you have done all the above then uncheck the folder and sync your device.

Error 1002

If you get this error there is a chance that your iPhone is probably stuck in a recovery mode loop. Try to recover in the normal way, If this fails then download the iREB software and connect your iPhone to your computer using the tool. Then go to the "Recovery mode loop fixer" tab and follow the instructions.

Error 1013

This error usually occurs when you try to restore iOS to a current or old firmware provided by Apple. Usually this is caused by TinyUmbrella which has added the update ip address to the hosts file of your computer and you need to remove the update address from the hosts file in order to update the device and connect to the update server.

If you are a Mac user, you can read about the solution below.

If you are a Windows user then go to C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers \ etc \ and open the "hosts" file with Notepad. Look for the entry: 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com and place a # symbol before the address and chage it to # 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com.

Restart your PC and try to update the OS , it will be successful .

Error 1015

This error just like the error 1013 is caused by a wrong Hosts file configuration made by TinyUmbrella. You can fix this like you fix the error 1015.

Error 1601, Error 1611

Errors starting with 16xx are often the cause of a (bad) USB port. Do you get this error, try connecting your device o a different USB port . Have you tried your USB ports? then try downloading iTunes again and re-install the software. Just restart the PC and try to reconnect again and if the problem persists just ask one of your friends to do it for you from their computer.

Error 3194

Page 16: Error 3194

This error (or an error in the range of 3000-3999) is usually found when you try to downgrade the device. This is because the SHSH blobs you are having is very likely not having the relevant firmware.

Or it could be caused by a misconfigured HOSTS file.

Check if iTunes software is not blocked by a Firewall or Antivirus software.

If you don't know the firmware of the SHSH blobs then don't try to downgrade the device.

An easier way to downgrade your device through SHSH blobs is by using TinyUmbrella.
