Imagine if this happened to you . . .

• Even though you have a filter, she got there by going to a secure anonymizer, https://fluteswimmer.com

Almost all filters miss these…

• There are thousands of sites called secure (https) anonymizers or proxy sites that allow users to circumvent most filtering systems

• These anonymizers are the most common way users bypass Internet blocking software

• 69% of parents are not even aware that these sites exist

There is a growing need for protection and accountability

• Men’s, women’s, or youth groups

• Organizational staffs

• Liability protection

• Members use the monitoring reports to have open and honest conversations with others about where they go and what they see online

And now we live in a mobile generation

• iPhone

• iTouch

• iPad

Parents have more influence than they might think

• Parents are the biggest influence on their children’s behavior -- more than friends, the media, educators, siblings, or church

What should you talk about?

Teach them to:

• Spend time with their children online. Have them learn about their children’s favorite online destinations

• Talk to their family about sexual victimization and the potential online dangers of pornography, gaming, and social networking

• Train their family the responsible use of online resources such as search engines, YouTube, etc.

Stay informed

being exposed to and what they are viewing

• Keep up with current and emerging threats by reading informative blogs and articles

• Have discussions with your own family about what you have learned - get their input as well

Filtering should not over block

• Some filters might block all pages on a site based on a root URL or key word regardless of the context, like craigslist

• The option with many filters is to block the entire site, or allow the entire site, such as google.com

• Choose a software that is context-based, customizable, and offers age-based ratings, not just for each site, but for each page visited

How do I educate about protection?

Talk about it from the pulpit and in counseling sessions:

1. Encourage accountability, with software as a tool

2. Find out what computer safeguards are utilized by your schools, public library, homes of children's friends, etc.)

3. Be aware of the changing online landscape
