Objectives

Identify common horse breeds.

Understand common horse terms.

Understand basic horse care.

Light Horses

Used for – Showing– Recreation– Work

Horse Breeds Quarter Horse: working ranch horse

– AQHA: largest horse breed assoc. in U.S.– fast sprinter (1/4 mile) = quarter horse– first breed developed in U.S. (1600’s)– most heavily muscled light horse– 14-16 hands tall at withers

Horse Breeds Thoroughbred: horse shows & racing

– faster at longer distances (1/4 - 2 miles)– jumping & hunting competitions– 15-17 hands tall

– endurance, heat tolerant– known for good looks– 14-15 hands tall

create a pattern of spots. Mottled.

machinery Now commonly used for pleasure

riding and showing. Also used for advertisements
