This year there is no STEM
Competition. Of course, stu-
dents may read any book of
their choosing including books
about science, technology, engi-
neering, and math.
The competition for this year
begins Wednesday, September
7th. Reading logs will come
home that day. Please encour-age your child to record the
books they have read.
EP Rayzor students have been
the Speeding to Read Champi-
ons two years in a row!! While
this is a wonderful accomplish-
ment, the benefit for our stu-
dents on their journey as read-
ers has been tremendous. Many
students are talking about the
books they enjoyed and making
recommendations to others. This is our goal: for students to
enjoy reading whatever genre is
of interest to them.
For those of you who are new
to our campus, Speeding to
Read is sponsored by Texas
Motor Speedway. Students will
record the books they read at
home and at school working
toward a goal. Recognition is
given for students, classes, and
schools for goal achievement at
the end of each turn. At the end of the year, we will go to Texas
Motor Speedway as a school for
our culminating ceremony.

Do you ever have difficulty
getting information about what
is happening at school from
your child? Many times our kids
are tired at night and not forth-
coming with details about what
they are learning. By using open
-ended questions, we can often
engage our children in great
conversations which help us
peer into what they are learn-
ing, how they are feeling about
school, and about their inter-
ests.
We offer two lists of conversa-
tion starters which can help in
talking with your child about
school. While not an exhaus-
tive list, it is a great place start.
Happy conversations!!

Lone Star Leadership Academies
are Sunday-Friday overnight
camps offered throughout the
summer for outstanding 4th-8th
graders who have been nominated
by their teachers. During the
camps, these young leaders travel
all over the state of Texas visiting
important sites. The goal is to
increase leadership abilities, gain
self-confidence and independence
as well as develop new friendships
from all over Texas.
Two EP Rayzor students took part in
the camps this summer. Morgan Davis,
currently in 5th grade, describes her
experience: “I realized that I can take
charge, take action and be a great
problem solver. During the camp we
were split into groups for the week.
Each day we were given a problem to
solve. I enjoyed working with my team
to figure out how we would overcome
the problem. From this experience, I
learned that when given a problem, I
can think on my feet and solve it with
the help of my teammates. We visited a
lot of fascinating sites such as the
Stockyards, AT&T Stadium, and the
Capitol building in Austin.”
Raul Ortega, currently in 6th grade at
the middle school, also took place in
the Leadership Academies. We are
thrilled for the experience of these two
students.

in the school at least once

their enthusiasm for
their “special area” and
their encouragement to
EP students.
