Personal profile of entrepreneur• Born in Bombay, started schooling in Greece, then moved to Indonesia

where she studied upto class 8.• Her father was working with Citibank and they then moved to US.• At the age of 18, Shaheen decided to stay back in India and wanted to

make some sort of difference in the life of the kids in the slum.• Akanksha formally came into existence in 1991.• In 1992 Shaheen graduated from St. Xaviers College and went to U.K

for Master’s in Education Project Planning for developing countries from Manchester University.

• Awards :– Ashoka Fellow (2001)– Global Leader for Tomorrow at the World Economic Forum

(2002)– Asia Society 21 Leader (2006)

Business profile of entrepreneur• From a single class of 15 children, Akanksha grew to 8

centres handeling 480 kids by 1998.• Today Akanksha has 34 centres in Mumbai and 20 centres

in Pune.• In 2006 Akanksha approached Pune Municipal Corporation

to adopt a Municipal School to transform the life of the children.

• In 2007, officially the seeds of the school project were sown.• Today the organisation is managing 6 schools in Mumbai

and 3 schools in Pune.• At the time of the adoption of the first school in Pune, the

kids were 50-70% below the national average but within one year on many indicators the national average was achieved.

Goals of the education program

• Focus on Math, Language and Values.• Idea of providing “a good time” to the

children in everything that they do.• To organise extra curricular program and

activities for the students.• To prepare the students for the jobs.

Study of the Alumni to understand the impact of the program

• Researcher from Cambridge University – impact assessment study 2010 – sample 150 alumni.

• 87% of the Akanksha students sat for SSC exam and passed.

• 58 % of them went to college.• In addition to studying they all work because they

needed to.• Many of them today are earning Rs 15000 – 20000

largely because of fluency in english and confidence.
