Spring 2011 www.lynchburgchamber.org Published for The Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce by Lynchburg's Tourism Program Lauded as Leader in the State T he Lynchburg Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau (‘discoverLynchburg’) markets Lynchburg as a destination for leisure trav- el, group tours, meetings and conventions and sport- ing events. ‘DiscoverLynchburg’ man- ages both national and international program- ming efforts which include marketing in printed publi- cations, online advertising, television promotions, and at industry trade shows across the US and around the world. At the recent 2011 Tourism Outlook Luncheon, ‘discover Lynchburg’ was lauded as a leader among tourism programs across the State, as well as the nation. Jack Berry, CEO of the Richmond Metropolitan CVB spoke to the crowd of over 100, including City Councilmen, Lynchburg Chamber Board members, the Lynchburg Tourism Board and hospitality stakeholders from local hotels, restau- rants, attrac- tions and more. Berry's presen- tation com- pared Lynchburg’s tourism pro- gram to some of the largest, most successful CVB’s in Virginia. “When looking at return on tourism dollars and visitor expenditures… Williamsburg has 16,000 rooms while Lynchburg barely has 2,000, if you divide the return per room, Lynchburg is right on their heels; you are doing extremely well”. Berry also looked at what percent of the CVB's budg- et is being spent on adver- tising; “The Lynchburg CVB is doing what Richmond or no other program in Virginia is doing…Lynchburg is spending one half of their budget on marketing. Lynchburg has TV com- mercials in target markets like Washington DC; Richmond can’t do that with our staff and budget”. see Tourism page 5 Tourism Leading the Way What’s Inside? 2011 Board of Directors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 Legislative Briefs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 Tourism . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7 Connection Trade Show . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 Leadership Lynchburg . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9 Ribbon Cuttings . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11 Members News . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 New Members . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 13 Women of Worth Lucheon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15 Small Business Awards . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15 “Lynchburg first in Virginia to launch a travel applica- tion for mobile phones.” - Jack Berry, CEO Richmond Metropolitian CVB Annual Meeting Features “Protecting Free Enterprise” T he Chamber's Annual Meeting held March 9 featured US Chamber board member Bill Walton who delivered an insightful message on “Free Enterprise in America: The Way Forward.” Walton, owner of Rappahannock Ventures, LLC, serves on the US Chamber Board and the American Enterprise Institute. The Impact of National Healthcare on Small BusinessSeminar was held on February 2 at the Craddock

Terry Hotel & Event Center. Thirty-five area business own-ers and executives heard two different but compatibleviews of the new federal healthcare regulations. BrownEdwards & Co. accountant, Ryan McEntire and LibertyUniversity Dean and Professor of Law, Mathew Staver dis-cussed how this new healthcare law will increase insur-ance premiums and will require the filing of a 1099 taxform for each $600 purchase from all vendors. DeanStaver further explained that the pending lawsuits whichcall the law unconstitutional may be resolved by the U.S.Supreme Court as early as June 2012.

This was the first in a series of Small Business seminarswhich will continue throughout the next year. Corporatesponsorships of these programs are still available. ContactMike Lewis at (434) 845-5968 x20 for more information.

So, what theheck is a

QR code?Last fallDiscoverLynchburg wasone of the firstDestination MarketingOrganizations in thenation to begin using“QR” codes in their adver-tising. “At first we weregetting comments like‘One of your photos did-n’t print’ or 'there is somecomputer code showing inyour ad’” said DeniseJackson ofDiscoverLynchburg. “Butwe knew tech-savvy travel-ers would know what thesecodes were and how to usethem” she added.

The codes saturate allDiscoverLynchburg ads, from print and online, to

TV and mobile. “This is atechnology wave we areproud to be leading” saidBeckie Nix, Director ofDiscoverLynchburg. "Withthe mobile market doingeverything except washingyour dishes, we certainlydidn’t want to miss out. When it comes to effectivemarketing you have to beout there ‘where and how’people are looking” Nixadded.

The strange lookingcode can be scannedusing a scan applicationfor smart phones. Thecode is programmed toprovide whatever informa-tion the advertiser wantsin the hands of the con-sumer. “We customize ourcodes to the target audi-ence and the message we

want them to receive” saidNix. “An ad towards youngcouples looking for aweekend getaway will carrya QR code that takes themto the lodging packagespage of the discoverlynch-burg.org website. Anotherad geared towardLynchburg as a destina-tion for sporting eventswill take the reader to thesports facilities page of thewebsite” Nix explained.Other codes provide thereader with importantmessages regarding eventsor specials for certain trav-el times of the year. “Itreally is limited only bythe advertiser’s creativityand marketing abilities”said Nix.
