In the wake of the government

shutdown, we are left with a

collective feeling of unease.

The post-shutdown blame

game is wearing thin. The sad

fact is that our Federal govern-

ment is as broken as the

healthcare.govwebsite seems

to be. The lingering message of

the 16-day shutdown? The

politicians in Washington are

so distant from the lives of

American citizens that they

have no qualms about putting

the whole country through

over two weeks of misery

when they knew how the

drama would eventually spin

out. The shutdown was pure

posturing and both parties

knew it…

…Our international credibility

sank to even lower depths dur-

ing those 16 days. I know there

are a lot of people who don’t

care what other countries

think of us. I get that. But, now

more than ever, we live in a

global economy. When our

trading partners think our gov-

ernment has become an inef-

fective laughing stock, it

erodes the value of the

American dollar and elevates

our global competitors. It

makes the countries that have

propped up our shrinking

economy get increasingly nerv-

ous. We owe China about $1.3

trillion. A recent opinion essay

in Xinhua (the Chinese state-

run media agency) called “for

the befuddled world to start

considering building a de-

Americanized world.” Other

countries are trying to de-

emphasize the dollar as the de

facto standard in world cur-

rency…

…The shutdown occurred right

when additional leaks about

National Security Agency spy-

ing hit the news. It seems we’ve

been eavesdropping on allied

leaders with reckless abandon

for years. Naturally, these

allied leaders are a bit pissed

off by this. They don’t trust us

much anymore. And who could

blame them? From their per-

spective, the United States is

being run by buffoons who spy

on them. You can see where

they might think that…

…How did it all come to this?

You don’t just look up and sud-

denly realize that your country

doesn’t really stand for what

you thought it did. I think, at

some point, we all just got

numb. We stopped paying

attention to what goes on in

Washington because we start-

ed expecting it to be corrupt.

We stopped believing that our

personal security was as

important as “national securi-

ty.” We stopped being sur-

prised by scandals. The instan-

taneous news streams on the

internet baffle us with so much

volume that it’s hard to filter

out the irrelevance. But so

many “news sources” are

fronts for special-interest

agendas. There is very little

objective information in a

world that is simply flooded

with information. When people

don’t trust “the government” or

“the media,” shadiness flour-

ishes in the trust vacuum…

…I’d like to think that the law-

makers learned something

from the public reaction to

their petty brinksmanship. I’d

like to think that the enormous

declines registered by both


parties in polls during the shut-

down shook them up a bit. But

I get the feeling that the 16 days

of government limbo were just

a sneak preview of bad things

to come. The global economy is

shaky and America has relin-

quished its position of leader-

ship through sheer ineptitude.

As Hunter S. Thompson once

said: “Things are never good.

Things just go from bad to

weird.” Sad but true…

…I wish I could tie all of this

cynicism up with a neat little

bow of hope for the future. But

the 16-day government shut-

down just reinforced my long-

standing belief that we no

longer have “a government of

the people, by the people and

for the people.” The men and

women in Washington serve

their own agendas at the

expense of the people. They

serve the agendas of the high-

dollar donors who get and

keep them in office. It’s been

that way for a long time, but

it’s never been more evident…

THE AFTERMATH

I know what I’ll be doing comeJanuary. I’ll be watching the NFLplayoffs on TV. So will the AtlantaFalcons as that became painfullyevident Sunday as they fell to theArizona Cardinals 27-13 to fall to 2-5 on the season.

This game was painful. It’s alwayspainful to watch when your teamloses, but to the Cardinals andCarson Palmer. Everything good Isaid last week I take back exceptthe stuff about Harry Douglas.

“In terms of the ball game today, Ithink anytime that you give upexplosive plays like we did in thefirst half offensively and an 80-yard touchdown where you loseleverage, where you get beat on adouble move, you have 10 penal-ties, you have four interceptionsin the ball game and you can’t runthe ball effectively, it is a formulafor not playing efficient, effectivefootball, and that was the casetoday here in Arizona,” saidFalcons’ head coach Mike Smith.

The defense stunk it up really badafter showing signs of improve-ment last week. The defense gaveup over 200 yards rushing – over150 in the first half alone, as theysaw a 3-0 lead become a 21-6 half-time deficit as rookie running backAndre Ellington ran for a 80-yardtouchdown and Palmer threw apair of touchdown passes, one toLarry Fitzgerald and one to MichaelFloyd.

Despite all the criticism of theFalcons’ offensive line coming intoSunday’s game Ryan was one of theleast sacked quarterbacks in theleague. Well Sunday the Cardinalsgot to him four times. Ryan, whohad only three interceptions com-ing into Sunday’s match up morethan doubled that throwing fouragainst the Cardinals. TheCardinals are like the anti-Christ toRyan. Ryan has thrown nine inter-ceptions in the last two games and11 in the three meetings since hebecame a pro in 2008. Ryan is now1-2 against the Cardinals. Ryan had

his worst game statistically thisseason with a quarterback rating of47.2. Ironically that is his best rat-ing in three games against Arizona.In three meetings with theCardinals Ryan’s average quarter-back rating is less than 40.

Ryan had to put the ball up a lotSunday because of the lack of arunning game. Sure, Steven

Jackson was back, but he might aswell stayed on the bench. Hegained a grand total of six yards on11 carries. All that free agentmoney spent on him and he hasgained less that 100 yards all sea-son in what few games he has par-ticipated in (3). To add insult toinjury, Ryan was the Falcons’ lead-ing rusher with 13 yards convertingon a fourth down on a broken playon their only touchdown drive.Ryan barely completed 55 percentof his passes as he threw the ball acareer high 61 timed completing 34for 301 yards and one touchdownand four interceptions.

Arizona managed to extend theirlead to 27-6 before Atlanta startedto show some life. With 8:40 theFalcons mounted their only scoringdrive of the half. Despite beingdown 21 points they used a lot oftime on the clock 4:02 to score.The Cardinal defense did not allowany big gains in the passing gameall day except for a 20-yard com-pletion to Douglas on the scoringdrive. The Falcons scored with 4:38to go on Ryan’s pass to Drew Davis

from four yards out.

Atlanta recovered the onside kickto make things interesting, butRyan’s fourth interception endedany semblance of a comeback asAtlanta falls to 2-5. This is Atlanta’sworst start since the fateful 2007season when they started 1-6 underBobby Petrino.

Atlanta has a lot to go over thisweek as they stay on the road fac-ing divisional foe Carolina.Something needs to be done withthe defense. Mike Nolan builtsome of the leagues best defensiveunits everywhere he’s been excepthere. He usually ran a 3-4 defense.Last year he took over Brian VanGorder’s defense and had to workwith what was there. This season

for some reason he’s hasn’t beenallowed to build the defense as hesees fit and it is putting his reputa-tion and talent to waste.

“We just have to learn from ourmistakes and man up to it, look inthe mirror and look from the leftto the right. We just have to comeout and continue to progress. Italways starts in practice, sotomorrow we’ll be back at it watch-ing film and Wednesday we’ll beoff to Carolina,” said defensive endJonathan Babineaux.

“You learn from your previousgame, whether it’s a win or a loss.You evaluate the tape, and you putyour head down and you go towork. We have not gotten the out-comes that we have wanted in fiveof the games. This, by far, is prob-ably the game that had the biggestdifference in score. We didn’t playwell. We have to get it fixed. Iknow those guys there in that roomwill handle that. We have a strongresilient group. We have to keepour head down, keep working anddig everyday to dig out of the holethat we’re in,” said Smith.

Atlanta plays Sunday against theCarolina Panthers. Kickoff is 1pmand the game will be aired on Fox.

Upon carrying the snake back down tothe valley floor, the boy prepares hima meal and a bed for the night. In themorning the snake asked: 'Please littleboy, will you take me back to my homenow? It is time for me to leave thisworld, and I would like to be at myhome now."

The little boy felt he'd been safe allthis time and the snake had kept hisword, so he would take it home asasked. He carefully picked up thesnake, took it close to his chest, andcarried him back to the woods, to hishome to die. Just before he laid therattlesnake down, the rattlesnaketurned and bit him in the chest.

The little boy cried out and threw thesnake upon the ground. 'Mr. Snake,why did you do that? Now I will surelydie.' The rattlesnake looked up at himand grinned: 'You knew what I waswhen you picked me up.'

Getting the right financial advice is awhole lot like that little boy's experi-ence, fraught with risk and danger,and usually skewed for the benefit ofthe person giving the advice. In manycases you'll get bitten unless you knowwhat you've picked up before youmove forward. I learned the problemwith getting financial advice as ateenager. I'd been working hard for afew years saved up a little bit ofmoney I wanted to invest. It was theearly 1980s so interest rates werequite high and investing your moneywas very profitable. I spent some timeresearching different investmentoptions, and I went to visit a fewfinancial advisors. It was clear thatthey had more money than I did: they

had nice suits and plush offices theyall seemed to exude confidence andhave all the answers. What struck mewas that they all had a very differentidea of what I should do. This confusedme so much that it put me off thewhole idea of going with any of them.

I'm sure by now you have read enoughon the internet to be totally confusedabout what to do. It would probably beeasier for me to help you understandthe nature of the financial snakes youmight be picking up while you are try-ing to get to the bottom of your finan-cial problems.

My Accountant

Should I talk to my accountant?

The answer seems obvious doesn't it: ifanyone knows your financial situationwell, It's your accountant. However,the short answer is a resounding No!It's not that your accountant doesn'thave your best interests at heart, it'sthat his expertise lies in helping yousave you money at tax time, minimis-ing your tax liability and lodging yourBAS.

Most accounting degrees will spendvery little to no time on insolvency, it'sgenerally done as a post graduate spe-ciality course for those who want towork in the field. Unless your account-ant is an insolvency specialist, hewon't know that a lot about the impli-cations of going bankrupt, I can assureyou insolvency specialists know muchabout tax returns or BAS in. If you dohappen to find an insolvency account-ing firm, they tend to be large firmswith very nice offices who charge

accordingly.

My Solicitor

Should I talk to my Solicitor?

No! You can talk to your solicitor butmore than likely it won't do you muchgood. Solicitors are really good atdoing things lawyers do, like helpingyou do your will and buying yourhouse and keeping you out of court ifyou're lucky. Insolvency specialists inAustralia tend to have either a legal oraccounting background, and the rea-son for that is simply that you can'tenroll in the post graduate study tobecome a qualified insolvency practi-tioner unless you have a law oraccounting degree.

Just as there are few insolvencyaccounting firms, there are very fewinsolvency legal practices in Australia,and yes if you find one you will pay ahefty price for their expertise.

Debt Consolidators

Should I consolidate my debts?

As I said above, most of the adviceyou'll receive on this subject willreflect the interests of the advicegiver. Therefore, if you call a debt con-solidation company, I can assure youthey will tell you to consolidate yourdebts. The debt consolidation businessis a multi-billion dollar industry mak-ing money in one very simple way:charging you a fee for helping youwrap all of your credit card and per-sonal loans into one neat and tidypackage.

I hate to tell you this but they aren'tdoing it for free. Please don't misun-derstand me: if you believe your finan-cial problems can be solved by payingless interest, then go ahead and lookinto the options. Even a small amountof interest saved over years quicklyadds up.

Generally I find if you are reading thisbook you've probably tried to consoli-date your debts already and come tothe following realisations like these:

• Your credit rating is no good, andyour credit file already has defaults onit so no one will give you a loan, con-solidated or otherwise

• By the time you work it all out, you'reso far down a hole that saving a littlebit of interest just won't make a lot ofdifference.

• You've probably reached the pointwhere you've had enough, you're emo-tionally exhausted, you can't go onanother day ignoring blocked calls onyour phone, ignoring the demands inthe mail and so on.

Financial Counselor

Should I talk to a financial counselor?

Yes! There are plenty of financialcounselling services to help you withthis, they have no hidden agendas andthey're a wonderful option for helpingyou think through your situation. Ifyou find yourself stressing out con-stantly, not sleeping, not eating orover-eating and thinking about moneypressures all the time, then get somehelp.

MONEY MANAGEMENT

DEBT HELP - IS BANKRUPTCYTHE RIGHT OPTION FOR ME?

There are also charities like Lifelinethat offer a wonderful service. Theywill be a sounding board if you justneed someone to discuss with youwhat your options are. Don't let yourfinancial problem destroy your life -ultimately it's just money.

Debt Agreements

What are the advantages of a DebtAgreement?

Debt agreements sometimes referredto as Part X (ten) debt agreements areessentially a binding agreementbetween you and the people you owemoney to.

Most likely, you'll run into similarproblems as we found in the debt con-solidation option, that is: your poorcredit rating will see creditors loseinterest very fast. This process isessentially a negotiation process,where the people you owe money towork through your bills, your incomeand so on in order to come up with anagreed repayment plan.

There are plenty of companies aroundthat offer this service, there is a rea-son you see ads on TV for these com-panies: it's because it's a big and prof-itable industry. Not only do theycharge an upfront fee anywherebetween $800 - $4,000, they alsocharge for giving you informationalong the way, and every time you paythem they take a fee for the trouble aswell.

You don't have to use a private compa-ny for this process - you can chooseITSA, the government body set up toadminister to these debt agreements,but they take 20% of whatever isagreed upon with the people you owemoney to. So if you thought debtagreements were the answer to yourprayers because they freeze interestpayments and simply replace themwith fees, then you're in for a shock.

The only reason you'd consider a debtagreement over bankruptcy would bea very specific set of circumstancesthat we'll discuss later on in this book.

Personal Insolvency Agreements

What's the difference between a DebtAgreement and a Personal InsolvencyAgreement?

Flexibility is the main thing PersonalInsolvency Agreements (PIA) have intheir favour. They're also administeredby a registered and - might I add - reg-ulated trustee including the govern-ment trustee ITSA, not a private com-pany that advertises on TV. Essentiallythis process is similar to DebtAgreements (DA): The trustee holds ameeting with the people you owemoney to and they negotiate a deal onyour behalf. You can offer a lump sumsettlement figure or enter into a pay-ment plan, or you can offer them

assets instead of cash. This may soundalright until you realize that one of thechallenges with PIA's is that 75% of thepeople you owe money have to agreeon the deal. If they don't, your propos-al is rejected or has to be renegotiat-ed.

Generally the people you owe moneywant all their money back plus inter-est. Sometimes they'll settle for lessthan the amount you owe them - it'sgenerally a percentage of the debt -but let me stress this aspect: becauseof all the variables involved in thenegotiation process to put together aPIA its difficult to put a figure on whatthe people you owe money to will set-tle for.

In most cases you'll have to pay back100% of the debt owed. This is notbecause your creditors are greedy orhave a mean streak, it's because theadministrators take 20% of whatever isagreed upon with the people you owemoney to. That applies whether youuse a private company for this processor ITSA, the government body setup toadminister to these PIAs.I've heard of creditors settling for less80% on rare occasions, but that usual-ly only occurs with a public companygoing into receivership owing hugesums of money (the kind that makesthe news). If you are were owed$10million and you know the peoplewho owe you the money have a teamof smart lawyers and some very cleverstructures in place and they offer 5% ofthe debt, you might take it and begrateful. Sadly, ordinary punters likeyou and me aren't going to get thatlucky!

Involuntary Bankruptcy

What happens if someone makes meBankrupt?

Involuntary bankruptcy occurs whensomeone you owe money to applies tothe court to declare you bankrupt.Generally when you get one of thesenotices, you have 21 days to pay all thedebt. If you don't, then the creditorgoes back to the court and asks thecourt to issue a sequestration orderthat declares you bankrupt. A trusteeis appointed, and then you have 14days to get the paperwork in and thenyou are bankrupt.You can object to a bankruptcy noticeby going to court after the 21 days haveexpired and put your case forward, toprevent it going to the next level.Other than the way you became bank-rupt there is in reality no differencebetween Involuntary Bankruptcy andor Voluntary Bankruptcy - once youare declared bankrupt, they're admin-istered to in the same way.However, the stress, torment and fearthat accompanies this process isincredible. If you think you are likelyto be made bankrupt by someone, getsome advice and act on that advice.Generally I've found it's always betterto know what you can and can't do

before you have someone bankruptyou. Once you are bankrupt, it's usual-ly too late.

Voluntary Bankruptcy

When should I consider VoluntaryBankruptcy?

This question is not the same foreveryone of course, but generally Ifind one way you could work it out isfigure out how long it will take you topay all of your debts - if its longer than3 years (the period you are declaredbankrupt), then this may help youmake that decision.

I had an 80 year old pensioner tell meonce that her credit card statementcalculated how long her debt wouldtake to pay at the rate she was payingher account, and it was 35 years!Imagine 35 years for one credit cardbill.

Credit rating damage can help youthink this through. If you move houseand forget to pay your $30 phone billfor 6 months more, it's very likely thephone company will default your cred-it file. That default will sit on your filefor 5 years, so for $30 you can haveyour credit filed seriously damaged forthat period of time.

In many ways, the ease with whichcompanies/credit providers candefault your credit file is unfair. Thepunishment doesn't seem to equal thecrime in my book. So if you alreadyhave defaults on your credit report for5 years, remember that bankruptcy ison your credit file for a total 7 yearsthen its wiped off completely.So if your credit rating is a big factorin trying to decide whether to enter

into a Debt Agreement or PersonalInsolvency Agreement or Bankruptcyremember they will all sit on yourcredit file for a total of 7 years. Thebiggest difference is that with a DA orPIA you pay back the money and stillhave it on your file for 7 years.

The other side of crime and punish-ment equation is bankruptcy, and inthis country the provisions are verygenerous: you can go bankrupt owingmillions of dollars and after 3 years it'sall over with no strings attached.Compared to countries like the UnitedStates, our bankruptcy laws are verygenerous.

I don't pretend to know why that is buta couple of hundred years ago debtorswent to prison. These days I supposethe government thinks the sooner itcan get you back on your feet workingand paying tax, the better. It makesmore sense than locking you up whichcosts the taxpayer anyway.

Bankruptcy wipes all of your debtsincluding ATO debts except for a fewthings:

• Centrelink Debts, Court Fines likeparking and speeding fines• HECS or Fee Help loans• Money to pay for a car accident if thecar was not insured.

There is much more that can be saidabout Bankruptcy but the purpose ofthis chapter was to help you decidebetween a few available options.When getting some advice, rememberwhat snake you are picking up. Goodluck!

While othersthink about the show that you'vebeen watching for the past decade.The show that has become a main-stay in your life, the one thing youmake it through your stressful weekto watch and they have just taken itoff without any warning at all,effectively destroying the world youlive in. No matter which groupdescribes you best, chances are thatthere is a TV show out there thatyou are missing. The good news isthat you can probably see it, oneway or another.

With all the advances in computerand electronic devices theses days,a treasured series may be just with-in your grasp. Many shows arebeing re-broadcast daily on differ-ent channels and television net-works. And for the ones that aren'tyou can just walk over to your com-puter and download them, or watchthem on YouTube. And if what youwant is still unavailable to you, thenyou can probably order the DVDsand be watching them on your DVDplayer, etc. in just a matter of days.

And then there are those of youwho already watch or own the oldshows you want to see. But now youwant to know some fun facts ortrivia about the show itself or thepeople who played on it. Things younever knew or maybe things thatyou suspected but were unsure if itwas true or not. Here are someexamples:

have had a crush on Deborah

Harry. I think I still have in stor-

age a copy of People with an arti-

cle about her with her dressed in

a mini-skirt, heels and giving that

pouting/come hither look into the

camera. My loins still stir when I

think of that picture and for that

any picture I have seen of Harry.

Not only is she knock dead gor-

geous, she can sing like nobody’s

business.

Punk, new wave and even mod-

ern rock is an odd beast. Unlike

the singers when my parents were

growing up, no longer is it a pre-

requisite to be able to sing on

key. Those with “off” voices had

personality and brought some-

thing different to the traditional

mix. Today there are computer

programs like Auto-Tune to put

you in tune (hello Britney Spears).

Not only can Harry sing, she sings

well – way beyond well to be

exact. Her vocals run the gamut

in emotions at times breathy and

come hither to growing and angry

and downright punk. Harry hits

all the notes as she did at the

Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta on

this particular night.

A nice, intimate crowd joined

Harry and her band ripped

through 16 songs mixing classics

along with material for an upcom-

ing album. Blondie began the

night with one f my favorites “One

Way or Another” off of their

breakthrough Parallel Lines. It’s

hard to believe that the album is

now 35 years old. The album, like

Harry both held up well.

Harry was in the holiday spirit as

he looked more like Deborah

Harry on this particular evening

in Atlanta as for part of the show

she donned a wizard’s outfit.

The set included four number one

songs. Blondie was quite the

trendsetter and even today con-

tinues as such. They had proba-

bly the first number one new

wave song in the land with “Heart

of Glass” off of Parallel Lines, the

first reggae song to hit number

one, “The Tide Is High”, which

many don’t realize is a cover of a

song originally done by The

Paragons, and the first rap song

to go number one, “Rapture”.

Their final number they played as

part of their encore was “Call Me”

off the American Gigolo sound-

track. Their version of “Rapture”

was an interesting one as the

song morphed into the Beastie

Boys’ “No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn”.

All in all, 16 songs were per-

formed by Blondie, 14 and a two-

song encore that featured “Call

Me” and “Dreaming”. Nine of the

songs were familiar Blondie clas-

sics and the other seven new

material. The new material will

take some time to get used to, as

with all new songs. Missing in the

set was anything off of “Maria” off

of No Exit. But who am I to com-

plain? Deborah Harry was in the

house. Yep, I’m a little biased.

What happens to old punksters?

Well, they start to look like your

parents. But that doesn’t stop the

attitude as X took the stage open-

ing for Blondie. It’s hard to

believe it’s been 33 years since

the release of their landmark

album Los Angeles, one of punks

true survivors put on a hell of an

opening set, playing mainly cuts

off their legendary album. An

added treat was that this was the

original lineup of the band.

Members of the band have played

out over the years as John Doe

and Exene Cervenka have done

solo stuff and the band hasn’t

released a new studio album

since 1993’s Hey Zeus.

Guitarist Billy Zoom with his con-

tinuous smile looked happy to be

there and his playing definitely

proved that as the band sounded

as gritty as ever.

Blondie and X on the same bill,

pinch me. And while some of my

rock idols and objects of lust have

gotten a little older, the message

and delivery is the same and my

memories and feeling intact.
