H igh-Tech Communication I nvaded My L if e

Since I have been studying in the US, I have been freed from high-tech communication except for e-

mail. When I was in Korea, I had a beeper, a cellular phone and a PC Communication ID, which was

necessary for Internet service. I had to pay about fifty dollars per month to use those things. I think fifty

dollars per month is no small amount of money for a student. I know you might ask, “Why did she need

those things if she was just a student?” My answer is, “For fashion‟s sake.”

To be honest, I didn‟t need to use a beeper and a cellular phone because I didn‟t have any urgent

business, but all my family and friends had cellular phones. In Korea, more than fifty per cent of the

population has a cellular phone. Think about that number; only children and very old people don‟t have one.

If I had not a cellular phone, everybody would have asked, “Why doesn‟t she have one?” I would

have been considered a strange and independent person. Korea has a group-oriented culture, so a strange and

independent person is not welcome. People think that such person is eccentric. I didn‟t want to be eccentric,so I could not do anything else but use a beeper and a cellular phone.

I had to check my beeper and cellular phone all the time, and I had to change the battery every day. It

was kind of a hassle. Even though I didn‟t want to answer the phone, I had to answer it because as long as I

had a beeper and a cellular phone, a quick answer was etiquette. It really invaded my life. I have never

thought they were useful and meaningful devices. I hate them because I am a person who likes to lead a

 peaceful, calm life.
