ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE

A-LEVEL

EXPECTATIONS

A-LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW OR BE ABLE TO DO BEFORE TAKING THIS COURSE?In order to study this subject, it is necessary to have gained a GCSE Level 6 or above in English Language and Level 5 or above in English Literature GCSE. You should enjoy the prospect and challenge of reading a wide variety of both literary and non-literary texts, of analysing these texts in depth, of making comparisons and connections between texts and be able to write creatively in a range of formats. You will need the ability to express your ideas effectively in discussion and in written responses.

WHAT WILL I LEARN ON THIS COURSE?The course will enable you to:

• Develop your interest and enjoyment of both literary and non-literary texts.

• Encourage you to see literary and linguistics approaches which deepen your understanding of what you read.

• Relate what you read to the contexts in which they are produced.

• Develop your writing for different audiences and purposes.

• Make comparisons between examples of written and spoken English.

• Opportunities to write creatively

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?The A level English Language & Literature course will be assessed by 80% external examinations and 20% coursework. It is a fully linear course, which means that it will be assessed in the summer of year 13.

The coursework assessment allows students the opportunity to be both independent and reflective learners, which support the development of academic skills required for further study. The coursework includes a language investigation and a creative original writing piece, allowing students to draw together the knowledge acquired across the course and apply the skills of linguistic analysis when exploring the language in a variety of contexts.

WHAT KIND OF STUDENT IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR?This course will appeal to students who:

• Have an interest in language as it used in both literature and every day contexts, such as advertising and conversation.

• Enjoy analysing language use in both literary and non-literary examples.

• Enjoy working under their own initiative in coursework research and creation.

• Want to study English as the main subject at university or part of a combined course.

• Want to keep their options open for further study – the English Language and Literature course will produce a valuable basis for further study in either disciplines, as well as being a suitable qualification for a wide range of courses.

WHAT COULD I GO ON TO DO AT THE END OF THIS COURSE?The skills and experiences involved in the study of English Language and Literature at AS or A level would prove an excellent foundation for a wide range of courses in higher education or for a variety of career options. The course would allow students to proceed to literature-based courses or linguistics at degree level. The insights developed in the course would be useful in other areas of study, particularly Media Studies, Law, Philosophy and Modern Languages. Those who wish to proceed directly in to a career will find the subject useful, particular in relation to work in journalism and the media.
