Guidelines: As a closing to the Marquez story, you will analyze “The Incredible and Sad Tale of Erendira and Her Heartless Grandmother” by writing an MCAS open-response question composition. The purpose of this assessment is for you to show how much you understood the short story and also to further prepare you for the upcoming MCAS exam. Follow the steps below to complete all pieces of the assessment:

• Turn the prompt into a kid friendly question (KFQ)• Identify two-three potential pieces of evidence• Work with a partner to write a topic sentence (“mini-thesis statement”) that conveys an

accurate and sophisticated understanding of the short story and that addresses the prompt.

• Identify the parts of your composition by filling in the parts of the outline.• Complete an ORQ outline. • Work on improving your analysis by using sentence chaining. • Use the rubric to revise/improve your ORQ. • Use writing time in class wisely! • Ask for help if you get stuck!
