January Meeting Minutes

Minutes of EAOS Meeting January 13, 2020

Meeting was called to order by President Mary Anne DiGrazia

welcoming members and guests.

Old Business:

Sarasota Show – Ken and his team put together a beautiful

display for the show. We received a 3rd place and a check.

There were 40 plants exhibited from 11 members with 9 blue, 5

red, and 6 yellow, plus Best Phal. Won by Diana Leonhardt.

Half of our plants received a ribbon. Well done!

Englewood Show – Sign-up sheets for our March 12, 13, 14

show are looking for lots of volunteers. I need to have people

sign up as soon as they can with their t-shirt size. I’ll need to

order the shirts in February and I want to be sure that everyone

gets a shirt. There are lots of opportunities to volunteer so

don’t miss out on an opportunity to help with our show. We’ll

needs lots of people to talk to Mary about helping in the kitchen

and providing food for 3 days. We always have a wonderful

response from our members and we eat very well.

Mentor Program – If you are interested in getting some help

with questions, etc., please sign up to be a mentee. If you

would like to help mentor someone, please sign up to be a

mentor. This is a great program for help and a nice way to

meet some of your fellow growers and learn from them. Judy

Russell is in charge and would love to sign you up.

Avram White-Rogers is our new librarian. Please check out the

great books on Orchids that you can take and read; return the

next month. Great way to learn more about orchids.

Culture Classes: Wolf Brucknew will be holding culture

classes at 6:30 before the meetings. You can bring troubled

plants for answers. Thank you, Wolf, for providing this

wonderful opportunity to our members.

New Business:

Dues are now payable at $15 per household. This helps to pay

our rent, speakers and other expenses that the club has. Please

make your check payable to EAOS for $15 and give it to Helen

during the break, if you haven’t already paid.

Next month we will be presenting a slate of officers for the next

2 years. If you are interested in being an officer, please see me,

call me or send me an email.

Venice Show – Set up will be January 31st with the show on

February 1st and 2nd. Ken will need all your beautiful blooming

plants for the display. Without the plants we can’t have a

beautiful display.

Starting with our February meeting we will have a new location

to meet. We will now hold our meetings at St. David’s

Episcopal Church which is located at 401 A Broadway.

Broadway is parallel to 776. The church is located behind

Stefano’s Family Restaurant, Bealls Outlet, Save-A-Lot and

Richards. Instead of going one mile north to Christ Lutheran

you’ll go about a mile south to our new location. The hall will

be set up for us with very nice chairs and tables in the back. It

will be a good new location.

We need to vote on whether you would like to meet on the 3rd

or 4th Monday night of the month. The 2nd Monday night is not

available for rent. The 1st Monday night is the Sarasota Orchid

Society meeting night. A vote was taken and was decided on

the 3rd Monday of the month for our meetings. We will need to

make some adjustments to our speakers to be sure they can

speak at our meeting and will not have a conflict.

David Berry gave a very informative presentation on

Orchidmania: The Orchid Craze in Victorian Britain. David is

the Associate Director of Academic Affairs and Special

Projects at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.

A break was taken for refreshments, to vote for your favorite

plant on the plant table, to buy raffle tickets, check out Wolf’s

plants for sale and to pay dues.

Mary Anne DiGrazia presented the plants on the plant table

with informative descriptions of each plant. Ribbons were

awarded for the plants.

Attention then went to the raffle table where numbers were

drawn. Winning numbers choosing from the plants and items

that were donated for the raffle.
