Temporary Structures

CampbellReith is regularly involved with the development and design of temporary demountable structures for exhibitions and events and has an enviable track record in this field.

We have been responsible for several innovations in venue design for squash and these included the patented ‘Courtback’ retractable seating system used to convert a squash court into an auditorium for viewing a facing glass-backed championship court.

We were also at the forefront in the development of transparent walled squash courts, including the worlds first court to have four unobstructed transparent walls.

In recent years we have become increasingly involved in the design of complex structures at major events and shows, including the Motorshow, Southampton and London Boat Shows, Ideal Home Show, Smithfield Show and Harrogate Gift Fair. Framework arrangements for the provision of design services have been established with many leading BECA members, including Cherwell Display, Dalesgate and Stanco.

Blending imaginative, innovative thinkingwith practical construction knowledge.

CampbellReith has been involved in a number of major event venues and theatres and in addition to the evaluation and appraisal/design of tiered structures/systems, has been responsible for the design of fly tower and stage structures.

We have also been involved in the development and design of portable audience safety barrier systems.

Our recent experiences in production and concert technology include design of support frameworks for computer controlled scenery, modular stage systems and robotics.

Since 2000, we have been involved in over 300 events at ExCel, including many seated events for up to 12,000 people including sporting events.

This includes the demountable TFS for the London Boat Show, which measures over 10,000 m2 and provided a temporary facility for windsurfing displays.

Primary responsibility for the safety of persons attending an event and of the users of temporary structures lies with the client, ie the organiser.

2 // Services

Complex structures used at events:

• Multideck Stands

• Structures over 4m in height

• Platforms, Stages and Steps

• Tiered Seating

• Lighting Towers and Rigs

• Tents and Marquees

• Crowd Barriers

World Travel Market, Japan Stand

Venue owners and management also carry responsibilities to ensure the suitability of the venue for the proposed event and to satisfy themselves that the organiser has undertaken and implemented the necessary risk assessments.

Whilst the Local Licensing Authority may request details and calculations for such structures, most temporary structures are not subject to control under the Building Regulations and there is a growing trend for Local Authorities to no longer ’approve’ such details.

Responsibility for ensuring the structural safety and stability of their structures will rest with the organiser, who is unlikely to have the appropriate technical expertise to ensure that the necessary details and calculations have been prepared to acceptable standards or that the structure has been competently erected.

Organisers should therefore give careful consideration to the appointment of an independent competent person to advise them on structural issues, this would normally be a chartered structural engineer with appropriate skill and experience of temporary demountable structures.

CampbellReith was responsible for the design and checking of the tempo-rary demountable structures for World Travel Market (WTM) 2015 exhibi-tion, the leading global event for the travel industry.

A vibrant business-to-business event covering a variety of destinations and industry sectors, WTM attracts around 50,000 people every year. The 2015 event featured about 5000 exhibitors from over 186 countries.

WTM was launched at London’s Olympia in 1980 before moving to Earl’s Court in 1992 and then to ExCeL London in 2002. It is administered by Reed Exhibitions with whom CampbellReith has worked for 20 years now, providing structural engineering services for this prestigious event.

It took the contractor teams six days to build the 33 double decker stands, 73 complex stands and 310 space structures. The CampbellReith team reviewed the complex stand calculations prior to the show and issued cer-tificates to build. Then they worked on site for the duration of the build to ensure the structures are built as per the calculations/drawings.

Display for New Bond Film “Spectre” Royal Albert Hall, London

CampbellReith’s engineers designed the structures supporting the external displays outside the Albert Hall for the opening premiere of the new James Bond film Spectre, which took place in October 2015.

The main feature display is a 40 ft high skeleton – a reference to the film’s opening action sequence set at the Day of the Dead Carnival in Mexico City. One of Mexico’s cultural highlights, the Day of the Dead festival included a carnival parade of dancing skeletons.

The skeleton skull prop was formed by an outer shell of polystyrene, which was foam glued to an internal structure of scaffolding. This internal scaffold-ing was then tied back to the main stage, and then braced by a portion of scaffolding that stuck out the back of the skull which would be out of sight from the red carpet, and stabilises it from any wind loading.
