Welcome to the 2nd Edition of SiliconIndia’s Top 100 Engineering Colleges,2011. This year apart from EngineeringColleges, we are also covering M.TechColleges. It is evident that IITs, NITs

and few other premier engineering colleges alone cannotchurn out enough engineers to meet this need and it is herethe other engineering colleges, private and public, play theirrole. But with new technology institutes mushrooming inevery nook and corner of the country, a dilemma about thequality of education arises for both IT organizations whoare looking for good engineers and students who want topursue a career in this industry.

We at SiliconIndia, with our 15 years of media expertiseand expose to IT and related technology space, understandthat despite the infrastructure, faculty, fee structure andother criteria, the sole parameter of judging a college's qual-ity is the performance of its graduates in the industry, whichin turn can be measured by the pay package commandedby them. Thus, this list is entirely based on a single param-

eter - CTC of a graduate. after five years of work experi-ence

Methodology:To rank the best engineering colleges, a perceptual studywas conducted among HR managers, Recruitment firmsand job boards. The companies/institutes were chosen care-fully to ensure that the HR managers/professionals inter-viewed were involved with recruitment and had a fair ideaabout the market. Over 3000 engineers who Graduated inthe year 2005 and did not pursue any other course/programa rewards were interviewed across the six metros-Delhi,Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai. After an exhaustive research and analysis, we finally cameup with a list of top 100 engineering institutes (govt/pri-vate) in three streams - Computer Science, Electronics andCommunication and Mechanical Engineering. Apart fromthis we also formed a list top 10 institutes across India in

After the “Mackinsey report”had expressed serious con-cerns that only 20% of stu-

dents coming out of higher educationalinstitutions are employable most of theemployers & members of HR frater-nity have been expressing gravedoubts, regarding the efficacy of oureducational system.

By and large, the industry has beenable to get the required numbers at theentry level albeit with some compro-mises. Surprisingly most of this socalled “unemployable” lot of studentshave demonstrated the capability lev-els expected of them upon selection &training and ultimately settled downinto successful careers. Many of thestudents at the bottom of the ladder, through structured learning or due to“hands on” learning and growth at thework place, a few years down the line, have entered into reputed multinationalcompanies.

It means that many employ-ers while hiring entry level talent arelooking for developed students with“Work Place Competencies”-(Knowl-edge, Skills-Technical & Soft-,Win-ning Attitudes & correct enablers e.g.balanced & whole some personality, emotional maturity, confidence, pas-sion for achievements etc.). Obviouslya young qualified student coming outof a professional college does not pos-sess these workplace competenciesquite as adequately, as the prospectiveemployer would wish to have & so theemployer feels the student is not em-ployable, however, through the processof getting experientally exposed to theworking on the job the students acquireand develop the competencies & skillsand succeed. Thus this competency &

skills development is the consequenceof rigorous experiential exposure, &work and the majority of profession-ally qualified “freshers” are able tosuccessfully acquire it. It is also obvi-ous that not all educational institutionsare able to ‘simulate’ similar conditionsfor the students during the process ofacquisition of the degree or diploma. This does not, however, mean that allthe students are not having the poten-tial to be gainfully employed, as theword “unemployable” has been pro-jected to mean; all it means is that thecorrect exposure & development hasnot been provided. Of course the stu-dents should possess the correct mix ofresources that can be converted intocorrect work place competency profileafter the due process of training, learn-ing and development.

Thus it is the “potential” thathas to be “spotted” by recruiters whilehiring at the entry level (read freshers)and recruiters have to be prepared toinvest in them through learning & de-velopment interventions, rather thanbeing vocally concerned that adequatetalent is not available. In my opinion, the 20%, so called employable cate-gory of students (as per Mackinseystudies) are those ones whose “re-source development” has already hap-pened to a better or larger extent, because of either their own extra re-sourcefulness, keenness, self drive oraptitude or the strong mentoring pro-vided by the institution when they arestudying. There is a band of about 60%students in the mid segment which arethe ones who can be so developed &made “employable” through strong &extensive learning & development ex-posure and will adequately meet the

expectations of mid segment employ-ers, which are all successful & estab-lished companies; its only somebottom 20%, who are the non moti-vated & lacking in both aptitude & selfdrive or the resource capability withinthem is too less, who should be classi-fied as “unemployable” & who shouldsettle down for lesser jobs demandinglower competency or skill levels.

However this perspective isnot visible in majority of cases; the ma-jority of the employers expect the freshrecruit to be “billable”, from day one.Industry & commercial compulsionsmay demand so, however, the bestsuited talent can not be acquired in thismanner. There is no harm in expectingsuch ‘billable’ entry level talent butthen industry has to be prepared to in-tegrate backwards i.e. it has to selectstudents based on potential earlyenough and provide them the experi-ential training during (say) their finalyear and evaluate again at the end as tohow many of the students undergoingsuch training have successfully comeup to expectations. This training, how-ever, needs to be cost effective & goodin quality. To be cost effective the train-ing has to be carried out either at thework place or better still, in the finalSemester at the college itself, with thehelp of training staff provided by in-dustry. So that when the time comes forthe students in evaluation at the finalinterviews before joining, he/she hasall the knowledge, skills and posseseswork place competencies expected ofhim/her. Alternatively outsourcedagencies paid by the recruiter may beengaged or selected few college facultycan be trained (train the trainer). With-out a “driving motive” in the student

Page 19: Engineering Colleges

and without the “motivated trainer”the development effort does not suc-ceed quite as much. If value addingtraining programmes are run for stu-dents without the minimum level ofcommitment, very few of them actu-ally participate & even fewer developthe necessary level of skills & com-petencies. Not all the trainers asavailable in the market meet the qual-ity expectations. Further highly ef-fective training organizationsavailable for good corporate training, are too costly for average student (or

Parents) to afford. Because it is therecruiter who benefits the most bygetting cost effective entry leveltrained manpower on board the re-cruiters should come forward to sub-sidize the cost of such trainingheavily. Also not this cost is easily re-covered (offset) against post induc-tion training which gets reduced by75% to 80%.The mid segment students so de-

veloped have more rational & realisticexpectations & stay longer with em-ployers & the attrition is substantially

reduced. It may be noted that bulk ofthe entry level jobs are suitable for themid segment student aspirants and outof our tweaked perceptions we are de-manding much too high a talent level(in terms of competencies & skills)which the current system is not devel-oping, as out lined earlier. There is no dearth of talent in any

part of India, we are crying “wolf” be-cause of dearth of mentoring, compe-tency and skill developmentinitiatives from industry and educa-tional institutions alike.

Your institution has a distinct character.Do HR managers understand how your college differs fromthat of your peers?Do your students or faculty identify themselves withunique aspects of your institution?

Very often the first contact that people have with the College is through imagesand materials that they see. A strong brand image helps people remember us. Research shows that the key to name recognition is consistent, frequent presen-tations over time.

So here's an opportunity for you articulate the institution’s value in the educationmarketplace. SiliconIndia will help you bring your college vision to life and raiseyour institution's profile in the eyes of the industry leaders, students, faculty &administrators. This is an opportunity for you to say “what’s so special about” yourinstitution.

We can feature your college in 'College Spotlight' section that appears in theCampus Buzz in SiliconIndia.com. Our Editorial team will interview yourselfand other key members of your college and build a story such that it truly

reflects the uniqueness of your college. We will work with you to positionthe story in such a way that expresses your image in ways that reflectsthe experience and strengthens your institution's brand. The profile willenable the readers to accurately capture and convey your institution'sessence and differentiates it from other institutions.

We would also focus on the institution's vision, philosophy and future plans. We will also talk about your leadership and the challenges in steeringthe institution.

VISIBILITY: Getting featured in College Spotlight might seem like a simpleidea, but it is an extraordinarily effective way to communicate your mes-sage to others. The Spotlight introduces your college to those who do notyet know about you and create their first impression of your college. It willhelp others see you as a College that knows itself and its strengths. Silicon-India's reach in the technology industry, especially among the IT leadersand HR managers, will ensure that you college brand stands out in theirminds.

IDENTITY: For those who do know our college, it reinforces your brandimage. It will let the students, faculty, administrators and alumni identifythemselves those unique characteristics which separate them from therest. When students, faculty, administrators and alumni see their collegebeing profiled by a leading media firm, they will feel proud of beingassociated with a brand such as your college. It will motivate/ re-energisethem and reinforce their commitment to your brand.

VALUE

ENROLLMENT: Establishing a clear image will attract the faculty andstudents. Future batch of students will be able todifferentiate between thousands of college options.

We help you communicate with hundredsof HR managers and CEOs in the

technology space.

The vast majority of students in our college are localstudents. Why do I need to brand?

It is precisely because a university degree is so important – arguably themost important item on one’s CV for a good many years, if not one’s wholelife – that branding has an vital role to play. How an individual will markethim or herself on graduation will be affected enormously by the percep-tion of the degree from that institution. You could say that the university/college brand becomes part of the individual’s own brand…So much is invested in students or other stakeholders making the rightchoice that institutions have a responsibility to help ensure that thishappens.

We are sure you don't want to be part of the “generic” higher educationmarket. We would invite you to sign up for the 'College Spotlight' feature. It will be our pleasure to feature your institution.
