We areSTEIGEREngineering Bureau STEIGER offers wide array of consultancy services for the mining industry.Your satisfaction is ensured by our commitment to the assignment and practical experience of our engineers.
Our Motto Our company name comes from the old German mining term „steiger“, which means foreman or overman of the mine. The word is derived from the German word (steige(r)nd) – to rise up or to come to the light and was adopted as a term already in the middle ages. Throughout the history safety has always been the one main concerns in mining. Steiger’s task was to ensure that men who descended into the mine in the morning would safely come back in the evening.

Understanding the mining projects development
phases and its key components is imperative to
succeed. Steiger and its partners have the right
experience and “know-how” with wide range of
Mineral Resources. We can therefore provide the
one shop to go to service when you plan to
succeed from greenfield all the way to financial
close or beyond.
From greenfield to financial close or beyond…
Understanding the development area topography
is one of the first tasks. DEM (Digital elevation
models) and topographical maps will be created,
these serve as the base for the planning and
engineering tasks.

Surface geophysical studies such as seismic
reflection, gravimetry, electrical resistivity,
magnetics & electromagnetics and ground

Geological evidences of mineralization and
general geology can be gathered from the ground
surface in the early stages of the exploration.
Initial hand samples may be collected and
analyzed in order to better evaluate the prospect
of the area and to generate the Exploration
Target.

Exploration planning is best to be done through a
project specific tailor made procedures manual
that will cover all the exploration related activities
from site to the laboratory together with the
budget and timeline. The manual incorporates the
best industry practices and international
requirements. Following it will help to guarantee
that the gathered exploration data is useable for
the upcoming feasibility studies and Mineral
Resource estimates.

Site geologist will ensure that the target coring
interval and drilling depth is reached. Site
geologist is also responsible for core handling and
keeping notes on working conditions and any
unforeseen situations that could arise or have
potential adverse impacts on the drilled material.
Drilling siteworks and supervision done by the
experienced geologists will ensure the use of best
industry practices while drilling and the credibility
of the drilled material.

The downhole logging such as density & natural
gamma, resistivity, sonic, caliper, deviation,
acoustic & optical televiewer, magnetic,
flowmeter etc. will aid to gather as much data as
possible from the drilled hole. The acquired data
is used for geological interpretations and for the
confirmation of the drilling works quality.

The lithological and geotechnical logging is usually
done at the site camp facilities to provide inputs
for the geological interpretations, mining
engineering and determination of the correct
sampling intervals. Information such as lithology,
color, grain size/sorting, alterations, fractures,
bedding core recovery, RQD etc.) are usually
documented and compiled into a log.

Correct sampling and sample preparation
procedures from cutting to crushing and splitting
are imperative to make sure that the material
used in the laboratory testing will represent the
geological variance as closely to reality as
possible. Throughout the pre-defined QAQC
procedures and the Chain of Custody
documentation the highest transparency can be
ensured.

Resource grade can be tested by a number of
complicated Resource specific laboratory tests
and analyzes such as XRF, XRD, ICP-MS, SEM,
Fischer Assay, Proximate and Ultimate etc.). In
order to warrant credibility of the test results,
correct testing standards and QAQC procedures
will have to be used also in the laboratory.

The exploration data validation is done through
the exploration database management. On the
basis of the database and the geologists “know-
how” the geological interpretations will be
compiled into a 3D deposit model by using the
CAD-based Bentley and Carlson software. From
the model the Resource estimates are derived and
signed-off by the Competent Person.

In order to foresee the potential impacts on the
groundwater or to estimate the available
groundwater amount, specific hydrogeological
studies such as pumping tests, water flow rate
tests and water quality sampling are usually
conducted. The effects to groundwater are
modeled through in 3D space by using the
Modflow software.

On site (SPT, DPSH, CPT, CPTU, soil sampling etc.)
and laboratory studies (Moisture content, particle
size, bulk density, Atterberg limits, compaction,
shear tests etc.) are needed for mining
engineering. Mechanical rock parameters are
important for the safe planning of the mining and
civil engineering structures and also for the
selection of suitable machinery.

A number of Modifying Factors have to be
considered when determining the suitable cut-off
grade and turning the Resource into Reserve.
Through the planning and engineering tasks, the
most optimal mining method and equipment are
selected and the mining volumes together with
the CAPEX and OPEX costs will be estimated. The
latter will form the base for scheduling and LOM
plans.

Environmental surveys and modeling will help to
fix the baseline for the EIA and assess the impacts
related with the mining operations. In addition to
the hydrogeological models, other important
impacts such as sound and dust emissions are
modeled by using Cadna A and Breeze Aermod
GIS Pro 7 software.

Every mining project has its impacts on the
surrounding environment. EIA is a must in every
development project and a successful one will
contribute to the Reserve statement and/or
acquiring of the mining licenses.

This is where the question “how much will it cost
and how much will it earn?” is answered. All the
studies are summarized and its cash flow related
inputs ran through a tailor made financial model.
Usually, a number of sensitivity scenarios will be
created and modeled through in order to better
assess the project risks and its effects.

Project or operational data review and consulting
will help to get back on track and to ensure that
the chosen way forward is the right or the most
optimal one. Training of the staff (such as 3D
modeling, siteworks, surveys) will ensure the use
of industry best practices and rise the overall
competence.
