Clear Target:• I can organize challenge units

using an Engineer Notebook.

Engineer Notebook (ENB)ENBs are a non-negotiable part of STEM Integration.

ENBs are a way to…Efficiently connect the math and science classesDocument the EDP for challengesRecord progress and dataModel what actual scientists do

Engineer Notebook (ENB)

Can be an interactive resourceCan be a powerful learning toolShould be used frequentlyShould be personal for studentsShould be structured

Page 5: Engineer Notebooks

ENBs help teachers to… Guide students through the EDP and challenges.

Be purposeful and explicit about math and science integration.

Periodically and systematically check students’ progress and understanding of the challenge (formative assessment).

As a formative assessment, ENBs are very versatile, as they offer several opportunities to assess many different aspects of student learning (understanding, processes, writing, reflection, etc.)

Connection to literacy with writing.

Encourage active learning.

Page 6: Engineer Notebooks

ENBs help students to… Organize their progress, learning, and thoughts through the EDP and challenge. Better recognize and understand the math and science integration. Record their research and data. Be more purposeful, accountable, and reflective about their learning. Engage in authentic scientific processes. Use evidence as they participate in Accountable Talk and develop their writing

skills. Make their learning visible. Gain confidence in their learning through trial-and-error and reflection.

ENBs help students to…

Progress through their thinking:

Reflect & Revise

Final Understanding

Identifiable – Student name on front and first page. Teacher/class/other information too?

Table of Contents with numbered pages.

Way to distinguish different sections.

Way for students to reflect on and connect their learning.

Flexibility (options for teacher and student use)

Although ENBs are a non-negotiable part of STEM Integration, how your school implements and uses the ENBs is up to your STEM team.

For example: what kind of notebook to use how to organize the notebookhow to use the notebook in math and science classesUse pencils/pens/highlighters/post-it notes?

Today, you will experience some suggested strategies.

Page 10: Engineer Notebooks

The million dollar question…

How do I grade the ENB? School level (team ) decision Many options for formative and summative assessment

Consider this: When you grade the ENB, the shift of focus (for students) moves from student ownership of personal learning (intrinsic) to chasing the carrot (extrinsic). Which do we really want? Can you provide a deliverable external to the ENB? If we can instill a sense of ownership for students, we will actually have to

grade less.

A deeper way to think about ENBs…The ENB is not a finished

product – but instead:a work-in-progressa place for reflection,

observation, and sense-making

a way to reveal student thinking

It is an avenue for communication and feedback.Teacher to studentStudent to teacherStudent to studentTeacher to parentStudent to parent
