2015 was a significant year for MClub with the leadership transition to the 8th Executive Committee. Building on our key thrusts of capacity building, inclusiveness and partnerships, we strengthened existing programmes and successfully rolled out new ones in areas where a need was identified. Two new programmes introduced in 2015 were the <Youth> Innovates Mosque Tech Challenge and Young Women in Leadership Dialogue. Whilst the programmes provided a platform for the youths to be engaged, more importantly they provided opportunities for us to collaborate with other like-minded organisations and agencies. This augurs well as it enabled us to strengthen partnerships and forge closer bonds with other community players.

Over the last year, MClub was able to reach out to and engage more than 900 individuals through various initiatives including the annual Graduates’ Tea and Collegiate Symposium. A total of 21 members of our Young Minds Club also had the opportunity to implement a service learning project in Cambodia. Through these platforms, we managed to connect with many youths who were looking for opportunities to make a difference in the community.

To ensure that our offerings continue to create value and remain relevant in the changing landscape, MClub has commenced a comprehensive programme review scheduled to be completed by end 2016. We recognise that a positive volunteering experience matters. Therefore, we are committed to encouraging youths from all backgrounds to not only aspire to give back to the community, but also develop positive connections in doing so. Ultimately, we encourage our youths to strive for excellence in their areas of contribution.

Moving forward, we will continue to enhance programme design and delivery by streamlining the various initiatives to create value. We will also deepen engagement with members and partners. We hope that with these changes, more youths and young professionals will discover their area of interest, step up and channel their energies towards serving the community.

As our efforts grow, we are confident that the torch of service will continue to be passed on from one generation of youths to the next. With a deeper sense of ownership and spirit of giving, we will be closer to our vision of “a dynamic and progressive young generation of Malay/Muslim Singaporeans strongly commited to society and plugged into the global community”.

On behalf of the ExCo, I would like to thank all members, partners and friends of MClub for your support and selfless contributions. Each of us has the power to create a positive impact and together we can achieve much more.

T’S MESSAGE

I look back over the 15 years since MENDAKI Club (MClub) was launched and I am glad to see the impact MClub has made on young professionals. Today we see many of these professionals volunteering actively within and beyond the community. This development bodes well for our community.

Since its inception, MClub’s focus has been engaging and leveraging on the resource and talent amongst our young professionals. It is hoped that through MClub, we are able to nurture the aspirations of the Malay/Muslim community through new partnerships and initiatives that encouraged a greater sense of community spirit among the young members of our community.

To date, eight groups of young professionals had served as members of the Executive Committee (ExCo), led by the respective Presidents. Each ExCo bring with them fresh perspectives and new ideas. For example, the Young Minds Club (YMC) was launched during the second ExCo term, targeting talented secondary school students. Starting with activities such as confidence-building camps, the scope of YMC activities has now expanded to include service learning projects overseas. Align to the current trends, the 7th ExCo led by its President, Mr Jeffrey Salleh, saw to the development and launch of the MClub Mobile Application, a networking and resource application for the community. And in response to the nation’s move towards Smart Nation, a collaborative effort involving young Muslim professionals saw the fruition of the Mosque Tech Challenge last year. I am indeed pleased to see the innovative spirit and creativity of our young in promoting problem solving skills through technology and innovation. Indeed this augurs well for the community.

Besides widening the horizons of the young participants, these initiatives continue to provide a platform for MClub to engage its myriad of stakeholders and offer them opportunities to be inspired and discover ways on how they can give back to society in their respective areas of excellence.

There has been great emphasis on partnerships in MClub in recent years, demonstrating the gotong-royong spirit and how the community is able to come together to collaborate for the greater good. This was depicted recently through strong support from Singapore Muslim Women’s Association (PPIS), IslamicEvents.sg, An-Nahdhah Mosque and Singapore Management University Muslim Society (SMUMS). These partnerships, just to name a few, had not only contributed to the Club’s success but also in building our common vision of a Community of Excellence. I thank them for their support.

Developing the next generation of leaders, MClub’s Leadership Incubator (LI) programme continues to strive in cultivating the spirit of committing to serve the community among young professionals with its third run last year. The LI is a well-rounded leadership syllabus that focused on challenges of the Malay/Muslim society in Singapore and the broader national and global issues. With the issues highlighted in the MClub Conversations series, LI not only acts as a platform to engage young professionals, but also as a catalyst in creating a positive impact in the community.

I am pleased to note that the current ExCo, led by its President Mr Azree Rahim, builds on the achievements of their predecessors and ensure a robust progression of the Club. I look forward to the launch of new initiatives such as the MClub Chapters that will widen our scope of engagement and sharing among the various youth groups and professionals.

The landscape for the next 15 years will be vastly different from today but I am confident that MClub will continue to create a positive impact at both community and national level through its sharpened efforts and the commitment, talent and innovative spirit of our young.

Our community’s pool of professionals is growing, a sign of the good progress our community is making. MClub will continue to broaden its networks to engage and promote the spirit of giving back to the community among Malay/Muslim professionals. Over the years, young professionals have readily stepped forward to be involved in various civic dialogues and take the lead in serving the community. Since its launch in 2013, MClub’s Leadership Incubator has seen strong interest from young professionals. They have not only provided ideas, but also time and effort in seeing through the ideas and make a meaningful impact. To date, more than 40 young professionals have collaborated with community organisations through this initiative. An example of a programme that came about as a result of this collaboration is ‘The Numbers Story’. Through this programme, pre-schoolers from less well-to-do families were taught Mathematical concepts through storytelling and play. Nurturing and engaging our Malay/Muslims youths and harnessing their talents for the good of our community is an ongoing effort.

Since coming on board as Advisor to the Professional

Since coming on board as Advisor to the Professional Outreach, I have met with many young professionals. I was impressed with their confidence, energy and enthusiasm. MClub will be increasing its engagement with young professionals across various fields through conversations and community work projects. We have many talents in our community. We also have many challenges ahead. There is much work to be done. In the coming years, I hope to build a strong awareness of our community challenges among our professionals and tap on our talented professionals to address some of these challenges. There is much we can do together.

YOUNG WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP DIALOGUE

ASPIRE

In our current geopolitical context, it has never been more timely for young women to have inspiring role models. 80 attendees gathered for this inaugural event, held in collaboration with Singapore Muslim Women’s Association (PPIS) and supported by Ilham Singapore and Jamiyah Singapore. The Young Women in Leadership Dialogue featured; Ms Rahayu Mahzam (Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC and Advisor for Yayasan MENDAKI’s Empowerment Programme for Girls), Ms Farida Alkaff (Regional Compliance Officer at Ingram Micro and Founder of UAE Compliance Professionals Network), Ms Hanna Taufiq Siraj (Head of MUIS Academy), Ms Suzanna Seng (Commercial Pilot at Etihad Airways and Young Singaporean Achiever Award 2013 Winner), and Ms Farisha Ishak (Singer and Winner of the first season of The Final 1). The lives and aspirations of these women serve as catalysts for other young women with big dreams. Realising one’s dreams starts with having a single seed of inspiration sowed and thereafter nurtured to fruition. The hopes, experiences, and accounts of these amazing women certainly serve to inspire the dreams of the next generation of young women. Each of their stories have undoubtedly impacted many hearts and minds, not just locally but also regionally and globally. Let’s encourage, nurture and train the next generation of women leaders.

We have every confidence that this year’s LI programmes, with support and nurturing, will maintain their momentum, as have the LI programmes from previous years.

A few highlights from our past LI projects that have continued to reach growth targets:

• TheNumbersStorywas implemented to improve numeracy and literacy skills in pre-schoolers from families in need through storytelling and games. In 2015, volunteers, preschool and primary school teachers, and collaborators brainstormed a pilot programme at Healthy Start Kindergarten to replicate in other communities.

• ProjectKhadijahcontinues to provide financial strategies to single mothers through job placement and retention. Recently launched was the Befriender Mums’ network which supports their training and employment aspirations.

• IlhamSingaporeallows pressed-for-time young professionals to maintain connections with each other and their communities. The creators also worked alongside various organisations for the Young Women in Leadership Dialogue in 2015.

• MakingMentorsreceived its first round of funding to build a cloud-based mentor management & training platform, for organisations that use volunteers to mentors youths.

What’s new? Well, the year came to an end with the first ever LI Bootcamp, a half-day intensive workshop to welcome keen young professionals to the LI programme. They tackled five real-world challenges such as mental health, empowering of women, and promoting a positive narrative for Muslim youth.

LEADERSHIPINCUBATORLEADERSHIPINCUBATOR

Already in its third year, the Leadership Incubator (LI) programme has catapulted projects developed by its members into the public realm. 2015 was no different as the initiative introduced three new projects in an effort to engage the community. One of the three projects: MindConnectors sought to build effective thinkers and communicators by integrating classroom with the real world. Another, HealthyGoWhere, applied online resources to tackle health and fitness related issues in the community. With everything available digitally at our fingertips, how better than to develop an app to promote a healthy lifestyle and making smart choices. Lastly, RacetoRead inculcates the importance of reading in disadvantaged kids. They utilise a unique strategy of ‘active reading’ to promote literacy while kids are in active play. These ‘Storywalks’ got everyone out of their seats, onto their feet, and learning to read.

CONVERSATIONSSERIES

MClub ExCo members presenting tokens of appreciation to speakers of MClub Conversations series

Take it from the industry experts who have had first hand experience in starting ventures from bottom up. Speaking at the year’s Conversations session, Mr Fazal Bahardeen, founder and CEO of CrescentRating aptly advised that being armed with the right skill set and possessing a purpose driven mind might not guarantee instant success. However, it will promote the steady growth that is crucial in the long run.

Held at the Singapore Management University (SMU), the annual event hosted 40 attendees for an evening of open dialogue on the topic of Turning Passion Projects into Sustainable Enterprises. Mr Shamir Rahim, who moderated the session, also shared his views on the matter, speaking as the founder and CEO of Sypher Labs.

There has never been a better time to change the way we perceive entrepreneurship as a viable career option. The technological era, more than ever before, has paved a far more accessible road for younger generations to achieve success. Like a true entrepreneur, it’s time to make your first move towards realising those dreams.

It’s no secret, running a business is no easy feat. Big or small, every enterprise begins as a start-up. Some say that dreaming big is all you need to make things materialise. While not untrue, every so often one needs to wake up from that very dream to begin taking on the physical world. With more questions than answers, and more problems than solutions, the first step towards building a sustainable business is to address matters as they come, without procrastinating. It’s not about who gets there first, it’s about who keeps going.

The attendees were introduced to esteemed speakers, each of whom shared their anecdotes - Dr Shahira Abdullah from The Numbers Story on playing a part in the community; Mr Ibrahim Musa of LinkedIn Singapore, who acquainted the 30 participants with the idea of acquiring critical skills prior to graduation, and expectations of what follows; and Safina Holdings’ Ustaz Tarmizi Wahid who shared his two cents on managing priorities and commitments, as an undergraduate. Participants also learned more about themselves through a personality test conducted by Muhammad Ikram. All around, the event was enjoyable, thought-provoking and inspiring.

What ignites your inner fire? More than just answering one of life’s burning questions; What truly inspires you? This leads to a unique experience on your journey towards self discovery and personal triumph. The Collegiate Symposium 2015 saw an energetic stream of differing opinions drawing on the theme of From the Green Tree, Fire! Co-organised with the Singapore Management University Muslim Society (SMUMS), the biennial event shed light on workforce life and the importance of being pre-equipped to seamlessly integrate into the workforce. We all find motivation from different things and the key is to find work which keeps that drive going.

TERTIARY NETWORK <YOUTH> INNOVATES MOSqUE TECH CHALLENGE

‘Hackathons’ have expanded beyond the Google workshops of Silicon Valley. Our blossoming Tertiary Network has thrown itself into the digital world by organising the 2015, first ever mosque hackathon. The event was in collaboration with 12 Geeks, IslamicEvents.sg, Majulah Community, Echoed Labs and the Central North Mosque cluster. During the 24-hour competition which was held at An-Nahdhah mosque, 15 participants threw themselves into forming solutions to community issues utilising tech applications. The winning prototype was ‘Go Mosque SG, an application to track the number of people attending Friday prayers.

Our generation of young ‘Millennials’ are different. They have witnessed, firsthand, turbulence of every nature - in the environment, in family and community, and in the workplace. They are mentally equipped to take on established norms and hierarchies. No problem or issue will be too great for this group to solve - they possess a ‘can do…must do…bring it on’ spirit. And they are tech savvy. Yesterday’s ‘geeks’ have created digital empires which have radically altered how we work, study and spend our leisure hours. Pocket protectors and coke-bottle glasses? These are the badges of honour. Our youths are here to forge into the digital era…and define it, indelibly.

The Young Minds Club (YMC) Initiation Day is a day where parents and students get a brief overview of the objectives and programmes they can expect to participate in. After years of staging the induction ceremony which formally welcomes new faces to the youngest wing of MClub, this year, the audience were greeted by two members of YMC who played host to the day’s programme. “… I was really nervous as I had never been given the role of an emcee for such a big event …” said Dalila Azmi who co-presented with fellow YMC member, Muhammad Wafiq. With current members of YMC taking on roles at such a large-scale event - themed Maze Runner this year, it is hoped to spark inspiration in the incoming members who will also be given opportunities to develop and express themselves creatively and confidently. YMC prides itself in grooming and bringing out the potential of the next generation and providing opportunities in empowering them to lead and initiate. The event commenced with a warm introductory speech by the Advisor of YMC, Ms Indah Putri and Mr Firdaus Hamzah, Vice-President of MClub. The Secondary One students broke the ice with their peers through interactive games. Parents were treated to a light-hearted sharing session with Mr Shahrom Taha, General Education Officer at MOE on the key role they can play in supporting their child’s growth and personal development. Rounding off the day was a group photo capturing the faces of over 100 past, present and new members of YMC.

Punchlines aside - these various professions were represented at the last Career Cafe for the 20 YMC members who were in attendance. Mr Riz Sunawan, Ms Fadila Wahid, Ms Izza Atiqa, Ms Nadia Yeo, and Mr Ridzwan Jasni, representing the above sectors respectively, shared openly about their varied career paths. Communicating news and bringing programming to the public, providing specialised healthcare, advising legal counsel, and troubleshooting engineering scenarios; we could not have asked for a wider spectrum of vocations. And what do they all have in common? Strong, unique but essential commitments to their communities at large. Accolades go to another successful Career Cafe and our speakers - serving to inspire our youth with the passion to leave their marks and ‘be the change they want to see.’

“It is better to give than to receive.” The adage is familiar to us all. However, this conviction was taken to heart with the first hand experiences of the groups initiating the YMC Local Community Projects. In March, a total of 25 of our youth members interacted with young residents of the Jamiyah Children’s Home. The focus of the project was team building and critical thinking skills. In the latter part of the year, 15 participants collaborated with the PPIS Family Services Centre (East). The very practical focal point was  ‘safety aspects’  of neighbourhood living.

A youth’s innate thirst to learn and understand the world better overcomes any language and even cultural barrier. This year’s Overseas Community Project (OCP) saw 21 members and alumni who, in their own voices, shared this very sentiment after returning from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Facilitating and engaging their learning was at the heart of their interaction with the Cambodian children at an on-site school. The children were engaged in basic English, Mathematics and Aesthetics lessons, tailored to their level of understanding. Our participants also repainted the walls of the infrastructure, and added murals to enhance the learning environment.

- Nurul Fathiha and Muhammad Taha YMC Alumni

With the YMC Overseas Community Project, the learning experience is definitely a two-way street. The connections established, and memories and experiences created between the our participants and the young Cambodian beneficiaries will be lifelong and life-changing. Hats off to our young participants for embodying and exemplifying the spirit of “paying it forward.”

Map Your Future was the theme for this year’s Graduates’ Tea with 250 attendees. To create or read a map, you need a ‘key’ or reference points. In this case, the key is connections - communities of personal networks. As our graduates will readily attest, academic knowledge and skill sets are just a part of the bigger picture. Equally crucial are the soft skills of collaboration and teamwork.

• AStrongHead Envisioning your future with success in mind

• ASteadyHeart Commitment to the self

• WillingHands Giving back through skills and experience

These points were driven home by the three speakers for the event: Ms Malis Selamat, Channels Director at Intel Security; Dr Nazirudin Nasir, Deputy Director at MUIS; and Mr Ibnur Rashad, Innovator at Ground-Up Initiative.

True to the spirit of Ramadan, MClub members, An-Nahdhah mosque personnel and volunteers worked en masse to host the annual Iftar Gathering held at the mosque’s main atrium. The 250-strong turnout that evening included MClub ExCo members, organisational partners, participants of the YMC Career Cafe, Leadership Incubator Pitching Session and <Youth> Innovates Mosque Tech Challenge, as well as mosque congregants.

The month of Ramadan is a period of renewal, transformation and resolution as the mosque chairman, Ustaz Fazalee Jaafar, reminded, where communities come together in keeping up with the ‘gotong-royong’ tradition while  enhancing spirituality. These ideals should be exemplified beyond Ramadan and should remain an integral part of our everyday life.

More than an evening of feasting and strengthening bonds within the community, the yearly event hopes to instil a strong sense of community bonds and inter-faith exchanges.
