W hen reviewing possible career options with parents,

improvisational comedic actor is somehow never mentioned in the same breath as doctor, lawyer, engineer or scientist. Hard to believe, right? But seriously, what would be more fun than getting up on stage with friends and making an audience laugh so hard that beverages spew from their noses?

Kimberly Pride, a graduate student in CSU’s School of Communication, aims to do just that every time she gets on stage – but she isn’t looking to make a career of it. Instead, she founded Friends with Benefits (FWB), a troupe of six improvisational comedic actors who perform live and unscripted to benefit special causes in Northeast Ohio.

As word has spread about FWB, the group has seen a steady increase in popularity and they are routinely asked to coax laughter out of audiences around town. A relatively new group, it has already raised money to benefit victims of floods in the Dominican Republic and a charity that provides financial support for families of children with serious medical conditions. It even helped raise money to send the Shaw High School Marching Band to China to perform at the 2009 Summer Olympics.

Kimberly’s life journey has been one of fun twists, unique turns and world travels. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in English and American Studies from BGSU,

she spent seven months teaching English in Venezuela, volunteered in the Dominican Republic, worked as a card writer at American Greetings and a trainer at Progressive, and hiked mountainous trails in Peru and Spain.

Today she lives in Willowick, Ohio and works at WECO Fund, Inc., a provider of financial services and programs to low and moderate-income individuals and families and the companies, organizations, and institutions in which they are involved. Kimberly enjoys her work and takes comfort in knowing that she is supporting the ambitions of people who want to save money, reduce debt and build wealth.

When not working, performing, in class or knocking out homework, Kimberly spends her summers outside enjoying the warm tempera-tures and sunshine while kayaking, hiking local trails and spending time in local parks. She also joins friends who are interested in trying their hand at improv every Tuesday night at Bela Dubby’s, on Madison Ave. in Lakewood, to perform live in front of a forgiving audience.

Upon graduation she hopes to continue to delight audiences and help those in need through FWB, return to the Dominican Republic to volunteer and brush up on her Spanish skills, and then find a career here at home that gives her the opportunity to use the communication research skills she is gaining while attending CSU.

FoodTis the season of grilling. Therefore, we are going to

have to go with the almighty hot dog. It’s estimated

that Americans consume 20 billion hot dogs a year - more

than twice the retail sales figures. That works out to

about 70 hot dogs per person each year. Word is that the

majority of those 20 billion are consumed at CSU outdoor

events on campus.
