What is EndNote, how can it help me and how can I get it?

EndNote® is a powerful software application that is used to manage personal databases of citations from sources such as journals, books or web sites. EndNote is compatible with most of the major UK Libraries databases. Selected database references can be easily downloaded into EndNote. Bibliographies and manuscripts can be created using EndNote, then easily formatted in a wide range of publication styles, including APA, MLA, Chicago and most major medical journals. The software is loaded in all UK Student Computing Labs. A campus-wide EndNote site license allows all current University of Kentucky faculty, students, and staff to download the latest version of EndNote from a secure campus server at the following URL: https://download.uky.edu Authentication, via Link Blue, is required to download the software. The easiest way to find EndNote after log-in to the Download site is to type the word EndNote in the gray search box. Be sure to comply with all legal provisions required by the site license.

#1. DIRECT DATA ENTRY—Individual references can be entered into EndNote via a form. Advantages: It is sometimes the only way to enter citations not found in electronic databases. Disadvantages: It is slow, because only one reference can be entered at a time, one field at a time. There may be a greater chance of typographical errors. #2. IMPORT— Search an individual database—then IMPORT needed references into EndNote Advantages: IMPORT is the best & most comprehensive way to find information from a specific database. IMPORT allows for more customization of citation elements. Some databases allow automatic weekly updates that can sent via email and Imported into EndNote. Disadvantages: IMPORT requires a few more steps to get the needed citations into EndNote. Save procedures may change subtly among individual databases #3. ONLINE SEARCH—Use the Internet from inside EndNote to connect to databases, then search and bring in citations. Advantages: Online Search is quick and can work well when seeking known citations Disadvantages: This is a fast, but NOT a comprehensive way to search. Many useful citations may be missed. Online Search has a “one size fits all” search box and does allow for full functionality. Some data elements (such as full-text URLs) may not transfer into EndNote via Connect. Not all databases are configured for EndNote Connect files. #4. DIRECT EXPORT—This allows you to search individual databases and directly export selected citations into EndNote. Advantages: This combines the best features of IMPORT, but saves steps for getting citations into EndNote. Disadvantages: Not all databases are configured for EndNote Direct Import.

Steps #1-6 are used to Import references that have been previously saved from a needed database. Most databases have instructions for how to save references for EndNote. ASCII txt is a standard.
