What are Endangered Animals

An endangered species is a population of organisms which is facing a high

risk of becoming extinct because it is either few in numbers, or threatened

by changing environmental or predation parameters. The

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has calculated the percentage

of endangered species.

LeatherbackThe leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), sometimes called the lute turtle, is the largest of all living turtles (as well as the largest extant sea turtle) and is the fourth largest modern reptile behind three crocodilians. It is the only living species in the genus Dermochelys. It can easily be differentiated from other modern sea turtles by its lack of a bony shell. Instead, its carapace is covered by skin and oily flesh.

Red-Headed VultureIt’s a medium-sized vulture of 76 to 86 cm (30 to 34 in) in length, weighing 3.5–6.3 kg (7.7–14 lb) and having a wingspan of about 1.99–2.6 m (6.5–8.5 ft). The adult has a prominent deep red to orange naked head and the juvenile being of paler red. It has a black body with pale grey band at the base of flight feathers. The sexes differ in color of the iris: males have a paler, whitish iris, while in females it is dark brown.

Prevention of Extinction of Endangered Animals

• Minimize use of herbicides and pesticides. • Place decals on windows to deter bird collisions.

• Protect wildlife habitat.

• Slow down when driving.
