-Ecology is study of interactions between non-living components in the environment

- light - water- wind- nutrients in soil- heat- solar radiation- atmosphere

What is Ecology ?

Studying of Ecology

* For non-living (abiotic)- Climatology- Hydrology- Oceanography- Physics- Chemistry- Geology- soil analysis

* For living (biotic)

- animal behavior- Taxonomy- Physiology-mathematics (population studies)

Levels of Organization of Ecology* Biosphere

– Surface of the earth – Composed of many ecosystems

* Ecosystem– Large or small as we decide.

* Population – one species live in one place at one time

* Community – All populations (diff. species) that live in a particular area.

*Habitat – physical location of community

*Organism – simplest level of organization

The place we choseWHY ?

-Windy-Cool-Wouldn’t sweat that much-Good place to sit and do our work ( rock )-Easier to find creature-Good view to relax our mind-Shaded by leaves-Nice water sound

My insectMEALY BUG

Page 9: Enbe project 1 individual

What is Mealy Bug

- Insect in the family Pserdococcidae- Found in moist and warm climate- Pest which feed on juice of plants- Adult is about 2-5mm long- 12-15 Generation per year

Page 10: Enbe project 1 individual

Life Cycle- Reproduction in mealy bug is mostly parthenogenetic.

- Mature female lays eggs in ovisacs

- Each ovisac contains 150- 600 eggs, majority of which are female.

- Eggs hatch in 3 to 9 days into nymphs called ‘crawlers’, which are very mobile

- Individual mealy bug take 25- 30 days to grow into adults under normal conditions.

- There are 12- 15 generations in a  year.

-  The insect remain active and reproduce round the year in warm climate

Life Cycle

of Mealy Bug

Page 12: Enbe project 1 individual

How they move ?- They crawl from an infected to healthy plant.

- Small crawlers are transported by wind, rain, birds and clothing.

- The waxy helps by sticking/clinging to equipments, animals or people moving during field operations.

- Transport of infested cotton sticks or seed cotton for long distance

- Crawlers are also carried through irrigated water

Mealy Bug and Ants

- Mealy Bug provide surgary secretion (honeydew) for ants as food.

- Ants helps to spread mealy bug in return

- Ants keep mealy bug colony clean from detritus

Page 14: Enbe project 1 individual

Damage-Weaken the plant by sucking sap from leaves, stems, roots and fruiting bodies

Page 16: Enbe project 1 individual

What is Moss ?

- Flowerless- Spore-producing plant- Moss stems are fairly weak- All mosses have rhizoids

Page 20: Enbe project 1 individual

FEEL

- Hot weather but cool at the river- Water very cool- Relaxed- Humid- Feel like want to go home

Page 21: Enbe project 1 individual

SEE- Rubbish by the stream- Rocks- Water- Beautiful scenery- Fast flowing water- Stream shaded by leaves- Trees and muds- Special creatures I’ve never seen before

Page 22: Enbe project 1 individual

HEAR- Flowing of water- Car sound from the bridge near stream- Leaves’ sound- Cricket sound at night- Sound of the wind

Page 23: Enbe project 1 individual

SMELL

- Smells salty at the stream- Smell of the leaves- Smell of the nature, the environment

Page 24: Enbe project 1 individual

TASTE

-The leaf tastes bitter- Water tastes like mineral water- sand tastes bitter

Page 25: Enbe project 1 individual

What I’ve experienced and learnt after the trip- Appreciate whatever we have now- Don’t destroy the nature, don’t throw rubbish

anywhere- To read the brief first before any project- Save endangered species- Do not waste food, water and electricity - Do not pollute the wonderful air

Page 26: Enbe project 1 individual

What I’ve learnt after the presentation- Work by following the brief- Make a proper plan before the presentation- Time management- As a leader, I’ve experienced and learnt the role of

leading the team and also my responsibility- Work well as a team, one man cannot do a good

job- Learnt to accept others ideas and combine- Reduce colours in info graphic, don’t make it

messy but simple
