Empathy and Compassion in Society

Adam Grant is a management professor at Wharton and author of the New YorkTimes and Wall Street Journal bestseller Giveand Take: A Revolutionary Approach toSuccess.

Alison Murdoch is the director of theFoundation for Developing Compassionand Wisdom. She trains a wide range of actors in ethics in Asia, Australia, Europe,Central and North America, and is a regular contributor to BBC Radio.

Antoine Lutz is a neuroscientist at the LyonNeuroscience Research Center (INSERM)in France. He was previously the associatescientist of Prof Richard Davidson at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His principal research focuses are the neurodynamical correlates of consciousness and neuroplasticity.

Chris Irons is a clinical psychologist workingfor the East London NHS Foundation.Alongside Professor Paul Gilbert, he is currently researching the role of compassion and rumination in depression, the role of compassion and shame in psychosis and the role of compassion in relationship quality.

Jo Berry is the founder of Building Bridges for Peace and advocates that empathy is the biggest weapon we have to end conflict. She works regularly in the UK and in areas of conflict including Israel and Palestine, Lebanon and Rwanda. Karen Armstrong is the author of numerous books on religious affairs, including most recently, Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life. Her work has been translated into over fifty languages. In 2008, she was awarded the TED Prize for her work in creating the Charter for Compassion movement.

Conference Keynote Speakers

Kristin Neff is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research and emotional resilience. She is author of the internationally acclaimed book Self-Compassion (2011) and an associate professor of Human Development and Culture at the University of Texas. Maureen Cooper is the author of The Compassionate Mind Approach to Reducing Stress. She has thirty years of experience as a professional educator and senior manager, and since 2004 has been offering trainings on the secular application of mindfulness, meditation and compassion in the workplace.

Patrick Gaffney is a writer, editor and meditation teacher, specialising in the compassion practices of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. He is the president of the Tenzin Gyatso Institute, a foundation named after the 14th Dalai Lama to put into action his values of compassion and universal responsibility.

Paul Ekman is a leading clinical psychologist and pioneer in the study of emotions and compassion. He worked for forty years at the Department of Psychiatry of the University of California. In recent years, he co-authored Emotional Awareness with the Dalai Lama.

Richard Barrett is the founder and chairman of the Barrett Values Centre, a values-based leadership programme used in 60 countries to support more than 4,000 organisations. Former values coordinator at the World Bank, his recent publications include The Values-Driven Organisation: Unleashing Human Potential for Performance and Profit (2013).

Yoav Shamir is an award-winning documentary director based in Tel-Aviv. His documentary feature films include Marta & Luis (2001), Checkpoint (2003), 5 Days (2005), Flipping Out (2007), Defamation (2009), and 10% What makes a hero? (2013).

Empathy and Compassion in Society

Who is this conference for? The conference is aimed at professionals from all sectors, including those working in management, policy, law, education, health, social care, as well as in the private sector. Empathy andCompassion in Society is a non-profit event.

Practical ToolsEmpathy and Compassion in Society 2013 gives professionals a new perspective and experience of methods to develop empathy and compassion. Internationally renowned neuroscientists, psychologists, thinkers and management consultants share their insights and present methods for developing compassion.

Innovators are also invited to submit case studies demonstrating how compassion has been a force for change in their area of work. On Thursday 24 October, the conference includes a choice of one-hour workshops. It is also followed by one-day and two-day post- conference workshops on 25-27 October.

A Groundbreaking Professional ConferenceEmpathy and Compassion in Society is a forum for professionals to explore what compassion is, how it can be cultivated, and what benefits it brings to the modern world.

The conference is a not-for-profit event organised by a partnership of charities.

Venue & AccessThe conference will take place at London’s Southbank Centre situated within easy walking distance of Waterloo, Embankment and Charing Cross Stations.

Full address: The Southbank Centre (Queen Elizabeth Hall Building), Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX. The venue is wheel chair accessible.

All international airports are within easy reach of these stations.

The post-conference workshops will take place at The London City School for Girls at the Barbican Centre and are easily accessible from Moorgate tube station.
