The MusesThese Greek deities of art and inspiration

are among the most familiar of the ancient

divinities. Originally only three muses werereferred to. Only much later was it agreed thatthere were the nine we know today. According tomost authors they are the daughters of Zeusand the Titaness Mnemosyne (goddess ofmemory), although this view is not unanimous.

The most accepted myth is as follows:After the gods defeated the Titans in their

epic battle, Zeus was asked by them to createdivinities who would be capable of leading acelebratory victory feast. To fulfil their wish,Zeus bedded Mnemosyne for nine consecutivenights, whereupon, in due time, she delivered

the nine daughters who were to become theMuses. The Muses were not always harmonious,joyful and carefree. Like most of the other gods,they could be vengeful when warranted.

The Romans identified the muses withcertain obscure Italian water-goddesses, the

Camenae. When songs appeared at the time theMuses were born, some men were so overcomewith delight that they sang without interrup-tion, forgetting to eat and drink,

until they eventually perished. These deadmen were transformed into locusts with a giftfrom the Muses allowing them to sing continu-ously from birth until death, without the needof sustenance. When they die, the locusts returnto the Muses to report who on earth honourseach of them, endearing a worshipper to theMuse he follows.

It was common for ancient schools to set upa shrine to the Muses called mouseion, the

root of the modern word museum. Thefamous Museum of Alexandria, founded byPtolemy I, was a temple dedicated to the Muses.Before poets or storytellers recited their work, itwas customary for them to invoke the inspira-tion and protection of the Muses.

CALLIOPE: Beautiful voice, is the MusEpic Poetry. She is the oldest of the Muse

most often considered their leader.CLIO: Or KLEIO, the fame giver, is theof History.

THALIA: Meaning festive, is the Museof Comedy. She is usually shown wearingcomic mask and wreaths of ivy, carrying ashepherds staff.

URANIA: The heavenly one, is the MusAstronomy. She was often pictured with and a compass.

POLYHYMNIA: Meaning many hymns,Muse of heroic Hymns and of Mimic Artusually depicted in meditation, with a finher mouth.
