OPENING PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for coming into our lives! We love and appreciate all you do for us.

In your name we pray.

GOSPEL LEARNING

The Gospel reading today comes from St. Matthew. Today is called “Gaudete Sunday.” “Gaudete” means “Rejoice.” The Gospel reading lists many great things that happen when Jesus is around: the blind see, the deaf hear, those who are sick are healed, and there is singing and dancing.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

2 Nung nakakulong si John the Baptist, nabalitaan nya ang mga ginagawa ni Christ. Kaya nagpadala si John ng ilang mga disciples nya 3 para tanungin si Jesus, “Kayo po ba yung sinabi ni John na dadating o maghihintay pa kami ng iba?”

4 Sumagot si Jesus, “Bumalik kayo kay John at sabihin nyo sa kanya ang naririnig at nakikita nyo. 5 Nakakakita ang mga bulag, nakakalakad ang mga pilay, gumagaling at nagiging malinis ang mga may ketong, nakakarinig ang mga bingi, nabubuhay uli ang mga patay, at pini-preach ang Magandang Balita sa mga mahihirap. 6 Pinagpala ang mga taong hindi nagdududa sa akin!”

7 Nang paalis na ang mga disciples ni John, nagsalita si Jesus sa mga tao tungkol kay John, “Nung nagpunta kayo sa desert, anong inexpect nyong makita? Isang tangkay ng tambo na hinipan ng hangin? 8 Bakit kayo pumunta doon? Para makita ang isang taong nakadamit ng mamahalin? Sa palasyo makikita ang mga nagdadamit ng ganun. 9 Ano bang gusto nyong makita? Isang prophet? Oo, prophet sya. At sinasabi sa inyo, higit pa sa isang prophet ang nakita nyo. 10 Dahil si John ang tinutukoy sa scripture, ‘Ipapadala ko ang aking messenger. Mauna sya sayo para ihanda ang dadaanan mo.’ 11 Tandaan nyo, mas dakila pa kay John the Baptist kesa sa sinumang pinanganak sa mundo. Pero mas dakila pa kay John ang pinakamababa sa Kaharian ng langit.

What are some of the great things that God has done for you that you can rejoice about today? How can you tell others about how great God is?

The reason why John and the other prophets preached about God and Jesus is they knew how great life could be if you lived it with God and they wanted everyone else to experience it too. We too are also asked to be prophets, like John and share the great things that God has done for us and to help others live lives that will enable them to have that great relationship with God.

As a family, share the great things that God has done for each one of you on social media. Add the hashtags #GaudeteSunday and #familyblessings.

TRIVIA: GAUDETE SUNDAY

Gaudete Sunday is Third Sunday of Advent, or two Sundays before Christmas Day and the word “gaudete” comes from Latin which means rejoicing and joyfulness. During this Sunday the priest wears pink (or rose) colored vestments to symbolize the hope and joy of the meaning celebration of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ.
