Edina Public Schools Annual Report on Curriculum, Instruction and Student Achievement
Elementary and Middle School Test Results
Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) was administered for the first time in Edina during the winter of 2006-2007. The MAP assesses reading and mathematics and replaces the Achievement Level Tests (ALTs) that had been administered since the 1998-1999 school year. Both of these tests are similar to other standardized multiple-choice tests in that they provide student growth data and national comparison information. Data from the MAP assist in planning personalized learning for each student, for monitoring school and district progress; for improving curriculum and instruction; and for school improvement and accountability.
Both tests are from the same publisher and scores from the two are closely comparable. The tables below provide Edina ALT/MAP data in reading and mathematics for a five-year period as well as comparisons to the national averages collected in 2003. The results show that Edina students consistently score well above the national norm average that was collected in 2003.
For reading Edina students in the elementary grades have maintained consistent averages
over the five-year period. At the middle school level the reading averages have declined somewhat from the earliest two years but have remained steady over the last three years. For mathematics across all six grades tested the average scores have remained steady to increasing over the five-year period.

Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments, Series II (MCA-II)
These tests form the backbone of the educational accountability system in Minnesota. Accountability calls for a results-oriented educational system that focuses on continuous improvement, community involvement and public reporting of results. Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), these tests are also used to judge school progress against set performance levels.
In 2005-2006 the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments underwent several major changes.
First, whereas the previous MCAs had been developed to align with the Minnesota Profile of Learning Standards, the new Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments, Series II (MCA-II) were developed to align with the Minnesota Academic Standards in mathematics and reading. Second, in order to comply with the requirements of NCLB, the assessment program was expanded to include assessments of mathematics and reading in grades 3-8, reading in grade 10 and mathematics in grade 11. In 2007-2008, in order to comply with the requirements of NCLB, the system will further expand to include science assessments in grades 5 and 8 as well as a high school life science assessment.
The MCA-IIs include a mixture of multiple-choice and constructed-response (open-ended)
questions. For reading the points assigned to open-ended items ranges from 13% in the early grades to 23% in the upper grades. In mathematics the range is 13% to 34%.
The tables that follow show the percentages of Edina and Minnesota students who scored proficient or better on the MCA-IIs in reading and mathematics. The criteria for determining when a student is proficient are established by the commissioner of education.

For most grades and across both subjects Edina students showed greater improvement fro 2005-2006 to 2006-2007 than did their Minnesota counterparts. In all cases Edina students score well above their Minnesota peers. In fact, when all grades are combined Edina has more students proficient in both reading and mathematics than any other K-12 district in the state. The graphs that follow show the percentages proficient in the top ten Minnesota districts. Following those graphs are additional graphs that compare Edina elementary and middle school performance with that in other west metro districts. In mathematics Edina performance exceeds that of all other west metro districts. In reading the middle school performance exceeds that in all other west metro districts and only one west metro district exceeds the Edina elementary school performance. For all of these comparisons, actual grade by grade data was used to configure all elementary comparisons to include grades 3-5 and middle school to include grades 6-8.
