FSB and Winkhaus – Your Key toOpening All Doors and Gates

FSB´s culture of innovations has a longtradition: what we call our ability to“Think outside the box” has repeatedlyled us to question and re-examineexisting fittings solutions used in com-mercial construction and conclude thatwe should never be content to leavewell enough alone.

Now we have entered the field of elec-tronic access control systems. We haveundertaken this challenge in coopera-tion with a partner who not only pos-sesses the necessary electronic know-how, but one whose range of profilecylinders, multi-point locking systemsand electronic components also secureshis position among the most importantmarket partners in the field of doorlocking technology: Winkhaus in Mün-ster. The first outcome of this alliance isthe new EZK Hardware system solution(EZK is the abbreviation for “electronicaccess control”), which we are present-ing here. This fittings system unitescore competencies of both companies:the proven Winkhaus BlueChip technol-ogy was further developed and comple-mented. The result is a totally new andnow patented fittings solution from FSBthat is technically perfectly tailored tothe system.

It goes without saying that this sharednew development also had to measureup to our high standards of formal aes-thetics. We believe that we have suc-cessfully met our objectives. Decidefor yourself.

With EZK sensitiveareas are well undercontrol. As from now,the problem of lostkeys has become athing of the past:instead of having toreplace entire lockingsystems or just some

locking components, only the affected Blue-Chip key is cancelledusing the software.Nothing is simpler andmore economical.

Electronic Access Control:The New Key Experience

“Simplicity beats complexity.”

Dieter Rams, former Head Designerat Braun AG, is of this opinion.

Or, to put it another way: the primaryfunction of technology is to servepeople – not the other way around.

In keeping with this principle, we atFSB decided that it would not onlybe useful to ponder the purpose ofelectronic access control systems foraesthetic reasons, but also due touser-oriented and thus, ergonomicconsiderations.

What Makes Us Different?

Electronically organized access controlsystems have established themselveson the market due to security tech-nical requirements in the event of lostkeys or changes in authorization.Characteristic of all access controlsystems available on the market is theneed for a connection between elec-tronic identification and mechanicalopening of the door.

There are various philosophies on themarket: either the door must unlockafter positive identification directly viathe identification medium by way of theprofile cylinder, or by way of a specialrotary door knob that is coupled to theprofile cylinder. Only then can the doorbe opened by means of conventionaldoor handle actuation.

Add to this pure fitting-oriented, “boxy”solutions that not only require a greatdeal of effort to install, but also anextremely high level of tolerance on thepart of the user in terms of meeting“design” and “aesthetics” criteria.

More Ergonomic, Quicker and Easier

FSB´s objective is to simplify and speedup this sequence and to respond tothe basic human need for simplification:we have directly connected the processof the electronic identification to amechatronic module, which we haveincorporated into the smallest space inthe door latch rose.

At the heart of this masterpiece ofprecision mechanics is an electronicallycontrolled coupling element that se-cures the direct operation of the lockvia the door handle immediately uponpositive identification. The need forcumbersome “intermediate” couplingbecomes superfluous.

Page 6: electronic Acces Door

6 Electronic Access Control

The areas of applica-tion for EZK fittings areversatile. The systemenables a flexible man-agement of accessauthorization whereverorganizational securityis a must: applicationexamples include theuse on doors leadingto EDP rooms, labora-tories, shop floors, archives, hotel roomsor sensitive administra-tive areas.

Page 7: electronic Acces Door

7Electronic Access Control

Of course, you are also provided with a“hotel function” software interface tothe “Fidelio” hotel booking system aswell as with a “time function” deliveringautomatic revocation of access authori-sation after a specified time.

Organizational Security

The EZK fitting is especially suitablefor establishing and realizing organiza-tional access authorizations and secu-rity structures in internal areas.

The Winkhaus BlueChip cylinder isessential as a component for lockingentrances comparable to those in con-ventional systems (through insertingand turning the key which affects thelocking bolt). It guarantees security –relevant protection especially for exter-nal entrances in accordance with DIN18257 or VDS Protection Class B, whenthe combined fittings elements havebeen tested and certified according toDIN EN 1906. All FSB security fittingsmeet these standards.

Unified Locking Concept forInternal and External Doors

The advantage here is that one and thesame identification or locking conceptcan be applied to both: the fittings tech-nology of FSB and the Winkhaus Blue-Chip system complement one anotherperfectly and are suitable for every areaof application thanks to versatile systemcomponents such as e.g., card readers.

In this sense, EZK is predestined forcommercial construction, especially incompanies, administrative facilities orpublic authorities where higher empha-sis is placed on increased organization-al security and less on “bold” burglaryprotection in internal rooms subjectto public traffic or where sensitive dataor data relating to persons is processed. For instance in offices of fiscal author-ities and employment offices where,as a general rule, all rooms need tobe locked when exited while open tothe public.

Similar conditions prevail as well in legaloffices, financial institutions, insuranceagencies, and tax consulting companiesor even in company managerial officeareas.

The EZK system is complemented withmodules and software solutions respec-tively for time or personnel data acqui-sition based on the Winkhaus BlueChipconcept to meet such stringent securityrequirements.

The Hospitable and Cost-EffectiveSolution for Hotels

Similar security requirements also applyto hotels: limited period and frequentlychanging room occupancy have tobe taken into consideration when estab-lishing a locking concept. Add to thisthe need for a system that is uncom-plicated, quick and safe as well as cost-efficient when it comes to reacting tofrequently lost or accidentally takenroom keys or identification media.

Areas of Use andApplications

The Winkhaus Blue-Chip technology allowsthe flawless integrationof the BlueChip profilecylinder into the EZKfittings system. This enables actuationof the lock, as is cus-tomary with mechani-cal locking systems, through the insertionand turning of the key.

Thus, all FSB fittings, for example FSB Secu-rity Fittings or also FSBSecurity Roses in com-bination with simpleFSB door handles, canalso be used on exter-nal doors and integra-ted into an electronicaccess control systemto secure external en-trances.

Page 8: electronic Acces Door

8 Electronic Access Control

The EZK fittings systemsolution from FSB andWinkhaus makes useof passive transpondertechnology, whichmeans that the “intelli-gence” is accommoda-ted in the fitting ratherthan in the identifica-tion medium. The iden-tification medium issimply programmedwith information suchas, for instance, thesystem or personnelallocation.

Internal Doors

Not only does electronic access controlguarantee the user a very aestheticallyappealing door fitting comparable inappearance to those found in residen-tial living rooms, but also allows simpleretrofitting of existing doors or existingmechanical access control systems.

Two components make this possible:the Winkhaus BlueChip system wassupplemented with a completely newand unique fittings solution from FSBthat is technically perfectly adapted tothe system: the electronic identificationdevice was integrated into the volumeof a conventional profile cylinder. To install, this module is simply inser-ted into the lock and bolted throughthe rose on the opposite side.

Technology andFunction Description

Passive Transponder Technology

An identification medium is identifiedwithout contact by means of the passivetransponder technology through theidentification unit. A medium (key orchip card) is automatically recognizedas authorized or not authorized by theelectronic module in the “key escut-cheon” as soon as it is held close to it.

The identification medium containsspecific or individually programmableinformation in the form of a chip, butrequires no battery which makes itmaintenance-free.

“Passive transponder technology”means that the power supply and intel-ligence of the system are both accom-modated within the EZK fittings; thekey, however, is only programmed withinformation about the system and em-ployee allocation.

The proven TK 5551 chip technologyfrom Atmel comes into play in thecontrol electronic of the EZK system. The data communication takes place ata frequency of 125 kHz and is codedby means of a 128 bit cryptic encoding. This encoding meets the most stringentsecurity standards and represents thelatest state-of-the-art technology.

It is also optionally possible to integratefurther chip technologies, e.g., Mifareor Legic, into the EZK key. In this way, various incompatible systems can bejointly accommodated on one single key.

Sensitive security areasare also frequently rel-evant to fire protectiontechnology. The EZKsystem from FSB andWinkhaus possessesunlimited FR approval

and thus guaranteesFR approved protec-tion on both existingand newly installedfire doors.

Approval for fire Doors

EZK fittings from FSB offer consider-able design simplification for specialistengineers and technical building spe-cialists. They provide a good securityposition with regard to complaints andliability.

The fire safety EZK fittings can be usedwithout limitations with certified fireprotection elements in compliance withDIN 18 273. EZK fittings with doorlatches in compliance with DIN EN 179can be used in conjunction with appro-priate locks including emergency exitelements.

The advantages are obvious, both inthe area of renovations and in new con-struction: due to the fire approval, elec-tronic access control can be installedin respective fire doors without the useof the fitting having to be declared inthe security system documents for thecommercial object.

In contrast, fittings without fire ap-proval that are intended for installationin fire doors must at least meet the“General Building Inspection TestCertificate“ requirements. And as if thatweren’t enough, their use on the firedoor must also be agreed with therespective door manufacturer. Whenthe manufacturer approves the useof this fitting, both use and approvalmust appear in the object security doc-uments. Should one of these regula-tions not be observed, the entire doorelement loses its fire approval, which inturn could lead to substantial liabilityconsequences in the event of a fire ordamage claims.

Therefore, the use of EZK fittings withFR approval implies considerably sim-plified planning: previously existing firedoors or even those pre-configured withother fittings can be continued to beused and updated to the latest standardwith EZK fittings.

Door Opening / Closing

– Hold the key in front of the “keyescutcheon” as shown.

– A short auditory signal sounds uponaccess approval. The door latch re-mains coupled for approx. 3 seconds. The door can now be opened. If ac-cess is denied, a long audible signalsounds and the door remains in neu-tral position.

Permanent Release

– To activate the permanent releasefunction, hold the key in front ofthe key escutcheon for approx. 3 –5seconds. Then 2 short auditory signalssound, after which the door latch re-mains permanently coupled. The doormay now be used permanently with-out having to reactivate the system.

– To deactivate the permanent releasefunction, hold the key in front of thekey escutcheon for approx. 3 – 5seconds. Then 2 long auditory signalssound, the permanent release func-tion is deactivated and the door latchreturns to neutral position. The dooris locked again.

Changing the Battery

– 3 successive short and long auditorysignals sound when the batteriesneed to be replaced.

– Remove the cover rose from the in-terior side of the door: to do so re-quires nothing more than looseningthe two Allen screws and removingthe subrose.

– Now pull the electronic sub-assemblyforward and disconnect the cableplug connection. Subsequently removethe entire electronic sub-assembly.

Glass Door Fittings andCounter/Lock Cases

Contemporary interior design wouldbe virtually inconceivable without glassdoors. They bring in more light, con-nect rooms and create a comfortableatmosphere. But the transparency ofthe glass door requires special attentionregarding the design of the fittings. It is the lock area, the door latch andthe door strip hinges that lend charac-ter to the glass door. FSB completes itsoffer on commercial doors with a glassdoor fittings range for installation indoor frames.

The door latches shown here were co-ordinated with the glass door as a designsuggestion. A combination with thedoor latch designs illustrated above isalso possible.

Materials andSurfaces

FSB only processes primary alloysaccording to DIN 1725 of the followingmaterial numbers:

AlMg3:Material No. 3.3541.02

AlMg1:Material No. 3.3315

AlMgSi0.5:Material No. 3.3206

Following its mechanical processing, the surface is protected by anodizing.Anodizing is an electro-chemical pro-cess that converts a certain thicknessof the aluminium surface into alumi-nium oxide.

The silver-white oxide layer can bedyed to increase the design possibilities.Once dyed, the surface is densified toguarantee corrosion resistance in addi-tion to light and weather resistance ofthe coloring within the framework ofthe specified parameters.

When used daily, aluminium surfacesmight wear off or become damaged byharder materials. One typical surfacedamage is scratches caused by fingerrings.

The natural color of aluminium is silver. For FSB products made of aluminiumthe following color classification applies:

FSB 01Aluminium natural colour anodised

FSB 02Aluminium German silver-colouranodised

FSB 03Aluminium brass-coloured anodised

As far as printing techniques allow, all standard colors are represented asclosely as possible at the side usingthe FSB 1023 door handle model asan example. We recommend to alwaysinsist on obtaining a true pattern forprecise color matching. Slight technicalprinting related color deviations cannotbe avoided.

Please note: Orders for aluminium doorhandles in new silver and brass colorwill be produced as order batches.

FSB-AluGrey is not only an optical butalso a functional alternative to commonaluminium surfaces.

The objective of the AluGrey projectwas to subject the conventional alumi-nium alloys to an innovative process toincrease the above mentioned compa-ratively low surface hardness. This pro-ved successful by adapting the com-ponents of the alloy: Silicon was usedinstead of the relatively high portion ofmagnesium. The visual result not onlyconvinces by its silvery grey gloss, resembling quartz, but also by a 75 –80 HB hardness (hardness test accor-ding to Brinell) that is 50% higher. Inaddition, it also notably increases thefittings utilization value.

The particularly aesthetic appeal of Alu-Grey is revealed by the lively grey sur-face obtained by the anodizing process. This surface allows the crystalline struc-ture of the alloy in the form of shadesand pigmenting to telegraph to the out-side. In this manner, the ever changingsurface appearance of AluGrey betweenwork pieces – as minimal as it may be -documents its very own and specialaesthetic quality.

The material group term ‘stainless steel’stands for more than 100 different cor-rosion and acid resistant steel qualities. For the manufacture of our fittings,we use a chrome-nickel steel assignedthe material No. 1.4301 according toDIN 17 440. It contains approx. 18%chrome and 8% nickel. This alloy hasproven itself in civil engineering.

Properties

Due to its extremely corrosion resistantsurface, stainless steel is exceptionallywell suited for door and window fittings.Even under high wear it hardly showsany traces of impact or scratches, it ishighly abrasion resistant in continuoususe, but most of all, it has easy careproperties due to the added alloys ofchrome and nickel.

Applications

We recommend the use of door andwindow fittings made of stainless steelfor all doors subject to frequent openingand closing, especially in public buil-dings, administration buildings, hospi-tals, doctor’s surgeries and hotels –wherever a large number of people goin and out and a continuously easy carefitting must stay functional.

Care

Fittings made of stainless steel used incivil engineering basically need no care.Traces of soiling can be removed witha moist cloth. If over time external fit-tings show traces of rust, this is merelya thin film of rust which does not ori-ginate from the material itself but hasbeen deposited on the fitting from out-side and can be removed by vigorousrubbing.

FSB offers stainless steel door andwindow fittings including accessorieswith the following surfaces:

FSB 6204Satin Stainless steel

FSB 6205Mirror polished Stainless steel

FSB 6206Matt Stainless steel

FSB 6210Stainless steel in brass finish

The version stainless steel fine mat heldin stock is particularly insensitive. Thevariant stainless steel mirror polished isan environmentally friendly alternativeto chromium plated surfaces. The sur-face stainless steel mat blasted lendsthe fitting a very tangible mat characterthat assumes a more polished appea-rance in use over time.

Please note: The versions mirror polish-ed, mat blasted and pvd/brass color areproduced to order.

FSB and brass

FSB has been supplying select doorand window furniture in brass, togetherwith accessories, for forty years. Fromthe very beginning we strove for origi-nality, spurning hackneyed forms suchas post horns or duck bills.

DIN 17 660

Brass furniture is available in a widerange of alloys and at widely differingprices. But not all that glitters is purebrass. It is in our case though. We makeexclusive use of the CuZn37 copper-zinc alloy specified under DIN 17 660as material no. 2.0321 and 2.0335.

Corrosion protection

Brass is prone to corrosion in everydayuse – a fact that is sometimes glossedover. Polishing is the only way roundthis. Anyone acquainted with morenortherly countries will have observedthe weekly buffing given to brass furni-ture on front doors there. This chorebecomes redundant if the surface iseither lacquered or waxed. Waxed brasscomponents are self-polishing throughuse. Areas that are not handled willrapidly develop a brown or grey-greenpatina. Many buyers deem this sur-face discolouration positively alluring.Lacquered brass furniture loses itsgloss once the lacquer is damaged.Intercrystalline corrosion then quicklysets in. Corroded handles can be re-conditioned, however – for a chargecovering costs.

Recommendation

FSB fundamentally recommends onlyusing waxed brass finishes. Polishedwaxed finishes can be looked afterusing proprietary cleansers. Do not uselacquered brass finishes in outdoor ap-plications where the sun and the envi-ronment will hasten the onset of cor-rosion. Brass furniture should not beconsidered for heavy duty applicationsin public buildings, since there is toomuch cleaning involved.

Surface Hygiene

A brief word of clarification concerningthe hygienic properties of door handles:There are those amongst our competi-tors who, citing the findings of researchinstitutes, make much in their brochuresof the enhanced sterilizing propertiesof certain finishes. FSB likewise hasaccess to reports proving that, for in-stance, cupriferous metals kill germsmore effectively than, in particular, syn-thetic materials. But FSB sets no greatstore by such findings. Whether a givenfinish destroys bacteria in 24 hours orin 72 is academic really, since in prac-tice, doors tend to be in fairly regularuse anyway. You’d have to take remedi-al action every time a door was openedor closed if you wished to eliminategerms altogether

FSB supplies door and window hard-ware in bronze, and the attendant ac-cessories, in the following finishes:

FSB 7305Bronze polished oiled

FSB 7615Bright patinated oiled Bronze

FSB 7625Dark patinated oiled Bronze

There may be slight colour variationsbetween batches where artificially agedbronze in particular is concerned. Farfrom being a quality defect, this phe-nomenon is rooted in the nature ofthe material and the chemical ageingprocess, which may give rise to slightlyvarying colour shades depending onthe climatic or production conditions in-volved. Such discrepancies are evenedout, however, from the moment thehardware is subjected to regular useand a natural patina is formed.

Polished bronze

Hardware with finish 7305 is polishedand acquires a subtly natural-lookingsheen as a result. Surfaces patinate ina natural manner in the course of time.

Artificially aged bronze

Hardware with finish 7615 and 7625 ispre-treated adopting a special proce-dure developed by FSB. An immersionbath for cupriferous metals imitates thenatural ageing process of the material.Artificial ageing yields a typical bronzepatina that is every bit as impressive asits counterpart brought about by envi-ronmental influences.

A final coating of oil at the works pro-tects both finishes against the afore-mentioned external influences, whichwould discolour untreated bronze sur-faces. The oil used can be effortlesslyremoved with a proprietary cleanserand is ecologically sound.

Corrosion control

On aesthetic grounds, we would notrecommend holding back time artifi-cially. FSB will, if expressly requested todo so, supply anyone hell bent all thesame on cocking a snook at the forcesof nature with bronze door levers sport-ing a lacquer finish. We would, how-ever, emphatically advise against sucha choice, since the coating involveddetracts from the natural patina effecttypical of the material. Lacquered bronzefittings lose their sheen, moreover, assoon as the lacquer is damaged and in-tercrystalline corrosion sets in.

The Material

We make use of a copper-tin alloy con-taining 92% copper and 8% tin forour bronze fittings that bears the formu-la CuSn8 and is registered as materialNo. 2.1030. This composition is char-acterised by its excellent resistance tocorrosion, great tensile strength and ex-treme hardness. The resistance to wearof this bronze makes it a prime candi-date for products of daily use that comein for a lot of rough treatment.
