News and Views Elga wins Polish drinks factory contract Elga has received an order valued at £470 000 to upgrade and expand the high purity water treatment system supplying product water to bottling and canning lines at Coca Cola Poland Ltd's plant at Radzymin near Warsaw. The order is the second Elga has received for Coca Cola plants in Poland. Under the contract Elga will supply a large Intercept RO 90 'L' reverse osmosis unit, acid dosing equipment and UV filter and will upgrade existing pre- and post- filtration equipment by the incorporation of new media. In addition, Elga will overhaul existing equipment and supply a range of cartridge filters, pumps and interconnecting pipework. Water from the system will be used in the bottling of 'Coca Cola', 'Fanta Orange' and 'Sprite' in 2-1itre bottles, and will also be supplied to a new automatic canning line which is to be installed at the plant. Ionics has announced that it has been selected by Motorola to design, build, install and commission an advanced ultra high purity water system for Motorola's US$1 billion semiconductor facility in Austin, Texas, USA. The value of equipment and services to be provided by Ionics is estimated to exceed $14 million. Ionics ultra high purity water system will be used in the manufacture of the newest generation of integrated circuits. The system will produce ultrapure water that exceeds current industry standards and is scheduled for commissioning in late 1994. Electrochemical membrane flue gas desulphurization A large number of flue gas desulphurlzatlon processes are presently under development throughout the world to combat the acid rain problem. Currently, most processes use wet or dry sorption to preferentially remove SO2 from the flue gas. Expensive reagents, reheating, and a landfill for disposal of the captured sulphur are often required. 4 Membrane Technology No. 44
