Some Accidents caused by Electric Storms

Fifteen workers were protecting from rain and hail in a warehouse made of plywood when lightning struck near the place and six workers – five sitting down and one standing up – received an electric discharge which caused 1st and 2nd degree burns in different parts of their bodies.

•Lack of experience to recognize an Electric Storm.•Inexistence of adequate shelter in the event of an Electric Storm.•Inadequate identification and evaluation of exposure to losses by the Supervisor.
Some Accidents Caused by Electric Storms
October 18th 2001: Crossroad between San Jose Pit and Southern Waste Dump (Rosita)
On October 18th 2001, at approximately 1 pm, when returning to work after having lunch, 5 people of the Drainage Crew from Mine Services were heading to a curb by climbing a safety berm in the road. Suddenly Mr. Limay received an electric discharge (lightning branch) that killed him.
The rest of his coworkers were not seriously injured.
