Spectroscopic data, such as excitation energies, transition probabilities, and oscillator strengths, for highly charged ions are needed in laser spectroscopy, astrophys- ics, plasma physics, and other technological applications. Experimental studies of highly charged ions are being car- ried out using high temperature plasmas, vacuum sparks, exploding wires, high power lasers, and ion traps such as EBIT.

To provide theoretical data to help future experi- ments and to identify areas for further high-precision studies, we have calculated transition energies and prob- abilities for electric dipole (El), electric quadrupole (E2), and magnetic dipole (M 1) transitions of Na-like ions Ba45+ through Us’+ using relativistic wave functions. All possible El, E2, and Ml transitions among states with principal quantum numbers n = 3 and 4 are included: There are 26 El, 26 E2, and 20 Ml transitions. For the present study, we have used a revised version’ of Desclaux’s Mul- ticonfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) computer program’ to obtain wave functions and energies. We used single- configuration Dirac-Fock wave functions in this work.

The electronic configurations of the Na-like ions are of the type ls22s22p6 + one valence electron. From theoretical studies of light elements in the Na isoelectronic sequence, it is known that thefvalues for El transitions could be too large by 5-10% primarily due to correlation effects in the Ne-like core, known as the core polariza- tion.3-5 The core polarization becomes less important as the net charge of an ion increases. Fully relaxed self-con- sistent-field (SCF) calculations with finite-size nucleus (as opposed to point nucleus) have been performed for the theoretical energies. The Breit interaction and the Lamb- shift corrections are included perturbatively. The Breit

interaction includes frequency-dependent retardation, which is important for describing the fine structure inter- vals.6 The MCDF computer code we have used in this study includes estimates of the Lamb-shift corrections for all bound electrons. In order to estimate self-energy con- tributions, Mohr’s values for the 2s and 2p electrons7 are extrapolated by scaling them by (2/?~)~ for the ns and np electrons with n > 2, and the results for the 3d, 4d, and 4f electrons of the hydrogen atom’ are used, scaled by Z4a5 (without introducing any further Z dependence). Vacuum-polarization corrections for all electrons were calculated using the Uehling potential’ with the Dirac- Fock orbitals. We have adopted self-energy corrections with the bare nuclear charge because experimental tran- sition energies for lighter Na-like ions agreed better with the bare nuclear charge values than any other estimates of the self-energy corrections.

The ground-state total energies, which consist of contributions from the Dirac eigenvalues, Coulomb in- teraction, the Breit operator, and the Lamb shift, of Ba45’ through U8’+ are listed in Table I. A direct comparison of the total energies based on different theoretical models will be meaningful only if the models use the same nuclear parameters since the Dirac eigenvalues are sensitive to the choice of such parameters. Calculated excitation energies are listed in Table II.

In calculating transition matrix elements, the use of relaxed or frozen core orbitals does not affect strong transitions such as E 1 transitions, but weak or forbidden transitions may be substantially altered when nonorthog- onal orbit& are used without also including the large number of matrix elements which vanish only for strictly orthogonal orbitals. Since we used formulas for the matrix

elements appropriate for orthogonal orbit& (as is the case for the majority of published data), we calculated the up- per-state orbitals in the field of frozen-core orbitals of the ground state to ensure their orthogonality. For transition energies, however, relaxed orbitals produce more reliable results,” and we calculated transition energies using fully relaxed orbitals for the upper and lower states.

The definition of multipole line strengths is consis- tent with that of Sobel’man’ * in the nonrelativistic limit. The relationships between the line strength S (in atomic units), the oscillator strength A and the transition prob- ability A are given by

where X is the transition wavelength (in A); g’ and g are the degeneracies of the upper and lower states, respec- tively; A is the transition probability (in s-l); f is the os- cillator strength (dimensionless); and SE,, SE2, and S,, are the electric dipole (in hz&), electric quadrupole (in e’&), and magnetic dipole [in (&‘I line strengths, re- spectively. Note that Sobel’man’s definition of SE2 is dif- ferent from that used in the NBS compilation of transition probabilities (Ref. 12 and references therein):

SE2 (Sobel’man) = (3/2) * SET (Ref. 12). (5)

The conversion constants in Eqs. (l)-(4) were derived from the fundamental constants in Ref. 13.

Multipole moments depend on the gauge associated with the electromagnetic field. We used the length gauge14 because past experience indicated that the length gauge results often were more reliable.15-17 Calculated transition probabilities are listed in Tables III-V together with the oscillator strengths and line strengths. Radiative lifetimes were calculated from the transition probabilities. Although E2 and Ml transitions are included in the calculation of the lifetimes, their effects are found to be less than 0.1%. Calculated values of lifetimes are listed in Table VI.

After our work was completed, we learned that Seely et al.‘* have extrapolated observed transition wavelengths of Na-like ions (Z < 64) to heavier ions using Dirac-Fock values as guidelines. We compare some of their extrap- olated values with ours in Table VII. We also compare ourf values for E 1 transitions with other theoretical values for highly charged Na-like ions, some of which include core-polarization corrections.5s’9*20 The main difference

between our transition wavelengths and those in Refs. 18-20 is in estimating the Lamb-shift contribution. No Lamb shift was included in Ref. 19, while no computa- tional details are known for the Dirac:Fock data in Ref. 20. The Dirac-Fock values used in Ref. 18 to guide ex- trapolation of experimental data-mostly for Z < 54- included approximate screening corrections for the self energy, which dominates the Lamb shift. Theodosiou and Curtis5 used a potential that contained a semiempirical core-polarization term determined from experimental energy levels of light Na-like ions. Our choice of using self energy based on the bare nucleus to avoid empirical parameters is likely to overestimate the self-energy con- tribution (which is positive) to the 3s level; hence our transition wavelengths involving the 3s level are likely to be too long, in particular for very heavy elements (Z > 80). For instance, our best estimates of the 3~~,~-3p,,2 and 3s,,2-3~3,~ transition wavelengths of U8’+ that include correlation corrections2’ and screening corrections to the self energy are 54.3 16 and 9.499 A, respectively. We expect our transition wavelengths to be accurate to 0.5% or better except for those for the 3~,,~-3p~,2 tGinSitiOnS in very heavy elements, which are likely to be too long by as much as 1%.

The close agreement between our f values for E 1 transitions and those of Theodosiou and Curtis5 indicates that for highly charged Na-like ions, the core polarization does not affect f values in any significant manner. Our transition probabilities for El transitions are likely to be reliable to 5% or better. Transition probabilities for E2 and Ml transitions are likely to be less reliable. No ex- perimental data are available for these transitions for direct comparison.
