Good Shepherd Sunday. It is the fourth Sunday of Easter. This Sunday’s

readings talk about God’s love personified by Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd. The

image of the good shepherd is not peculiar to the New Testament. The image of a

shepherd to characterize God’s perfect love is everywhere in the prophetic tradition.

For me, I like best the image of the shepherd who protects his sheep from

wolves even to the extent of facing danger; he is not a hired hand.

In 2000, I was the class adviser of one group of freshman. I thought it was

easy to be their father. While it was easy to know them by name, but it was totally

another thing to know them personally. But one situation changed the way I look at

things. During the final grading period, there were students who need to make up for

either lack of requirements or failed test scores. And since email or text messages was

not yet accessible, the only way to reach out to them was to go and visit them in their homes. It was very

revealing. I discovered a lot of things about my students, about why they had some serious problems at school,

about the need for more attention provided to them and about the need for true and selfless teachers who will

help challenged students.

I thought it was enough to know them according to the ways they express themselves at school. More

often than not, what they show in school is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a huge unknown that a teacher

or adviser would not know unless the teacher-student relationship is modelled after the relationship of the

Good Shepherd and His sheep.

o0o

I know that you will read me between the lines. I know you will say that this should have happened

here in the parish. Absolutely. I will agree with you. Pray, then, to God that my heart may still be formed

according to the heart of the Good Shepherd.

o0o

First Eucharist. It is a very special time for our children receiving the Body and Blood of Christ for

the first time. It is a special time, too, for their catechists and families for they have poured their hearts for their

formation.

Be inspired. What you eat and drink is Christ. Like the food you take for nourishment, the Body and

Blood of Christ are our nourishment body and soul for we are made for heaven. We therefore take care and

nourish our heavenly nature by coming to Mass, by listening to the Word of God and by eating the Body of

Christ and drinking His blood. But we always have to remember that we must approach the Eucharist with

clean hearts.

Congratulations to you all!

May: Month in honor of Mary. Yes, the whole month of May and we traditionally offer our praises

to God because we have a special woman, that is Mary. We crown her with flowers and offer her hymns that

specially talk about her motherhood and Queenship.

Let us make this time special for our patroness, Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

This month we have special celebration for Mary: May 13 is centenary of the apparition of the Blessed

Virgin Mary at Fatima and May 31 is the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

I invite you to give special devotion to our Mother this month. We can do this in various ways, for

example, offering her flowers, praying the rosary and or doing a novena.

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Saint Damien of Molokai, apostle to the Lepers, Belgium (1840-1889) – May 10

Born in Belgium, Damien became a priest and volunteered for the Hawaiian missions. When Damien

arrived at Molokai, he built a perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, where the lepers spent hours with Jesus

experiencing His love, joy and peace. Speaking of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, Bl. Damien of Molokai said,

“I find my consolation in my one Companion Who never abandons me.” “Were it not for the constant

presence of our Divine Master in our humble chapel, I would have found it impossible to persevere in sharing

the lot of the lepers in Molokai. …The Eucharist is the bread that gives strength.”

Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration is available in the

chapel 24 hours every day. For adoration outside of the 24-hour regular Thursday schedule, call the office

for instructions and to enlist. Everyone is welcome. Spend as much or as little time as you can. Thank you

for offering our Lord this special hour. Expect God's blessing, and give Him thanks.

Seeking a Leader for the Greeters

Are you good at coordinating people? We are in need of someone to take on the leadership of the Greeters.

This would be to coordinate when we have sign-ups to be greeters in the first place, lead training sessions,

be sure we have coverage for special events and the like. It would be across all Masses - not that the leader

has to be at all Masses, just that they are the go-to person for scheduling and such.

Please call Ace at the office - 541-926-1449. Thanks!

Our Lady of Fatima

During this month we will have parts of the story of Fatima in the bulletin. All information is taken from the EWTN

site.

Part 1: The Children and the Angel

Servant of God Lucia Santos Blessed Francisco Marto Blessed Jacinta Marto

In rural Portugal of 1916 it would not have been unusual to see children leading their family flocks to pasture.

This is what the children of the Marto and Santos families, cousins all, did on many days. Often it was Lucia Santos,

Francisco Marto and his sister Jacinta, who gladly undertook this chore, grateful for the chance to be outdoors and to

play as the sheep silently grazed. They would take their families few sheep to graze on small plots of land owned by their

parents in different parts of the sera, the mountainous plateau on which was located the village of Fátima (where the par-

ish church was) and Aljustrel (where the children actually resided).

Two favorite grazing areas were the hillside facing Aljustrel, near an outcropping called Loca do Cabeco (Place of the

Head) and the Cova da Iria (Cove of Irene) at some distance beyond Fátima. At first one, then the other, would occur the

apparitions which would change the course of the children's lives and the history of the 20th century.

~~~
In the spring of 1916 Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta, had their first encounter with a heavenly messenger. Writing in her
memoirs, composed under obedience to the Bishop, Lucia tells of that first meeting.
We went on that occasion to my parents' property, which is at the bottom of the Cabeco, facing east. It is called Chousa
Velha.
About the middle of the morning it began to drizzle and we climbed up the hill, followed by our sheep, in search of a
rock that would shelter us. And so it was that we entered for the first time into that blessed place. It is in the middle of an
olive grove that belongs to my godfather, Anastacio. From there one can see the village where I was born, my father's
house, and also Casa Velha and Eira da Pedra. The olive grove, which really belongs to several people, extends as far as
these places.
We spent the day there, in spite of the fact that the rain had stopped and the sun was shining in a clear sky. We ate our
lunch and began to say the Rosary. After that we began to play a game with pebbles. We had only been at it a few mo-
ments when a strong wind began to shake the trees and we looked up to see what was happening, since it was such a
calm day. And then we began to see, in the distance, above the trees that stretched to the east, a light whiter than snow in
the form of a young man, quite transparent, and as brilliant as crystal in the rays of the sun. As he came near we were
able to see his features. We were astonished and absorbed and we said nothing to one another. And then he said:
Do not be afraid. I am the angel of peace. Pray with me. He knelt, bending his forehead to the ground. With a supernatural impulse we did the same, repeating the words we
heard him say:
My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not
hope, and do not love You. After repeating this prayer three times the angel rose and said to us:
Pray in this way. The hearts of Jesus and Mary are ready to listen to you. And he disappeared. He left us in an atmosphere of the supernatural that was so intense we were for a long time unaware
of our own existence. The presence of God was so powerful and intimate that even among ourselves we could not speak.
On the next day, too, this same atmosphere held us bound, and it lessened and disappeared only gradually. None of us
thought of talking about this apparition or any pledge of secrecy. We were locked in silence without having willed it.
The intense effect that the apparition of the Angel had on the children, quite different from the more serene experience of
the Virgin the following year. Lucia states,
I don't know why, but the apparitions of our Lady produced in us effects quite different from the angel's visitations We
felt in both instances the same intimate happiness, peace and joy, but instead of the physical prostration the angel im-
posed, our Lady brought a feeling of expansion and freedom; and instead of this annihilation in the divine presence, we
wished only to exult in our joy. There was no difficulty of speech when our Lady appeared; there was rather on my part
a desire to communicate.
This difference can perhaps be explained in this way. The angels of whatever choir share in common with God a spiritu-
al nature, unmixed with matter. The goodness of their being, filled with the divine justice according to the degree of glo-
ry granted to each, radiates that holiness unmediated, though proportioned to the capacity of human beings to experience
it. Not without reason Scripture shows how easily an angel appearing to men can be confused with God Himself (Rev
19:10, 22:9). When our Lady appears, however, although her glory is greater than that of the highest seraphim her hu-
man nature cloaks that glory in the familiar, just as did Our Lord's human nature, even after the Resurrection.
Although the angels, too, can appear in more mundane fashion, it must have suited the divine purposes to reveal to the
children something of the holiness of God. Lucia tells us of the lingering effect it had on them.
His words sank so deeply into our minds that we never forgot them, and ever after we used to spend long periods on our
knees repeating them, sometimes until we fell down exhausted.
~~~

Sometime during the summer of 1916 the three cousins were playing in the heat of the day in the garden near the well

behind the Santos home in Aljustrel. Lucia describes how the angel appeared to them once more, chastising them for

their for their lack of spiritual seriousness.

Suddenly we saw the same angel near us.

What are you doing? You must pray! Pray! The hearts of Jesus and Mary have merciful designs for you. You

must offer your prayers and sacrifices to God, the Most High.

"But how are we to sacrifice?" I asked.

In every way you can offer sacrifice to God in reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication

for sinners. In this way you will bring peace to our country, for I am its guardian angel, the Angel of Portugal.

Above all, bear and accept with patience the sufferings God will send you.

This apparition renewed the same profound effect which the first one had on them. Francisco, who throughout the ap-

pearances of the angel and Our Lady would see but not hear, was unsuccessful in prying from the girls the words which

the angel had spoken until the following day. Lucia tells us,

The Angels' words sank deeply into our souls like a gleaming torch, showing us Who God is, what is His love for us, and

how he wants us to love Him too; the value of sacrifice and how it pleases Him; how He receives it for the conversion of

sinners. That is why from that moment we began to offer Him whatever mortified us.

~~~
Lucia is uncertain when the third apparition of the angel occurred, sometime in late September or in October 1916 is her
recollection. Having gone to the Cabeco with their flocks, and being more attentive to the words of the angel, they im-
mediately knelt down to pray the prayer taught them by the angel: My God, I believe, I adore etc...
After we had repeated this prayer I don't know how many time we saw the shining over us a strange light. We lifted our
heads to see what was happening. the Angel was holding in his left hand a chalice and over it, in the air, was a host from
which drops of blood fell into the chalice. The Angel leaves the chalice in the air, kneels near us and tells us to repeat
three times:
Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body,
Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrag-
es, sacrileges and indifferences by which He is offended. And by the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and
the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.
After that he rose, took again in his hand the chalice and the host. The host he gave to me and the contents of the chalice
he gave to Jacinta and Francisco, saying at the same time,
Eat and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ terribly outraged by the ingratitude of men. Offer reparation
for their sakes and console God.
Once more he bowed to the ground repeating with us the same prayer thrice:
Oh, Blessed Trinity etc.
and disappeared. Overwhelmed by the supernatural atmosphere that involved us, we imitated the Angel in everything,
kneeling prostrate as he did and repeating the prayers he said.
It was in this way that catechized in prayer, reparative suffering, and the doctrine of the Holy Eucharist, and strength-
ened by the Bread of Angels, that the children of Fátima were prepared for the visitation of the Queen of Portugal, the
Immaculate Virgin Mary.
Introduction to Centering Prayer Program
Centering Prayer is a method of prayer revived from ancient teachings in the Christian contemplative heritage that emphasize prayer as personal relationship with God. Centering Prayer offers us a way to quiet our faculties. By taking time to “rest in God” each day, we prepare to receive the gift of God's presence. Come learn more about this powerful spiritual discipline.
Dear St Mary’s Catholic Church,
Hi! I am Adam, an intern with the Corvallis Knights Baseball team. We play from June-August at OSU’s Goss Stadium, and we have something extra special planned for this summer that we’d love to share with you.
This summer, on Wednesday, July 12th, we are coordinating with our partners at HOPE 107.9 (KHPE) for our matchup that evening against the Kelowna Falcons. First pitch is set for 6:40 PM and the honorary first pitch will be thrown out by a HOPE 107.9 DJ. During the game there will be on-field entertainment by area youth groups, Christian music between innings, Christian trivia, and some prize giveaways!
Tickets purchased at the Box Office at the game are generally $7, but we are working with area churches to pack the park this night and to start making it a special annual event. Members from your church are able purchase tickets for only $5 on this night, if purchased in advance through a staff member in our office. We are happy to have members from your church reach out individually to us, or to have one contact person at your church to call in a couple of days before the game to confirm a final count (and pay at once, if that’s easier).
The members of your church can receive the discounted tickets up until 24 hours before the game. On the day of the game tickets will be the normal price of $7. Our season ticket packages are currently on sale and information about the different packages can be found on our website: corvallisknights.com/tickets.php
To buy season tickets or HOPE Night tickets, call 541-752-5656 and ask for either Holly or Koko. To get the discounted ticket price for HOPE Night, the buyer has to mention which church they are from. When members call the office they can choose to receive their tickets in the mail or to pick them up at will call. When buying tickets at the office members can pay with either cash or card.
Thank you for your time, I hope you have a great day!
Sincerely, Adam King Corvallis Knights Baseball Intern
