Ef Hermitage, alavez un palacio y unmuseo, está formado por un conjunto deedificios a orillas del río Neva. Fue comenzadopor Pedro I el Grande (r. ú82-ry25), el zarque fundó la ciudad de San Petersburgo(r7o3) tomando París y Amsterdam comomodelos, y posteriormente ampliado porsus sucesores hasta la Revolución de r9r7.Especialmente importantes para su desarrollofueron Catalina II la Grande (r. ry62-96), qreconstruyó el Pequeño Hermitage y el ViejoHermitage para albergar las coleccionesimperiales de arte (r77r-87), y el nieto deésta, Nicolás I (r. r8z5-55), que añadió elNuevo Hermitage. Sus fondos, que fueronnacionalizados tras la Revolución de r917,provienen en su mayoría, de las coleccionesde estos tres zares, cuyos retratos abren laexposición.

La exposiciónmuestra además una importante selecciónde pinturas, dibujos y esculturas de los siglosxvr al xx que ilustran la riqueza, el origen yla evolución de la colección del Hermitage.Este Museo cuenta con el mejor conjuntode pintura holandesa y flamenca del sigloxvrr (Rembrandt, Hals y Rubens, todosrepresentados en la muestra) fuera de losPaíses Bajos, creada gracias a la pasión dePedro el Grande por el arte de los holandeses.Sus sucesores, especialmente Catalina laGrande y Alejandro I, además de realizarencargos concretos a artistas renombrados,como Chardin y Thorvaldsen, compraronimportantes colecciones de arte, como ladel comerciante berlinés Gotzkowski ola deJosefina Bonaparte. Consiguieron asíimpresionantes conjuntos de pintura italiana

-entre los que destacan el San Sebastián, deTizrano,y El tañedor de /aúd, de Caravaggio-,española Q elázquez, El Greco y Ribera), yfrancesa (Poussin y $Tatteau). En esculturael Hermitage destaca por su colección deterracotas --como el Extasis de santa Teresa

de Bernini- y de esculturas neoclásicas deAntonio Canova.

Los zares coleccionaban, además, joyas yvaliosas piezas de artes decorativas occidentales

-como el Ratno de aciagos de la casa Fabergé-

y orientales. La orfebrería china y las ioyasindias de los siglos xvrr al xrx, ado¡nadas conpiedras preciosas y esmaltes de colores, sonconsecuencia de la fascinación por Orientedurante este periodo.

En un ámbito distinto, en la sala C, se puededisfrutar la colección de arte del siglo xrx y delas vanguardias eu¡opeas que ingresaron en lacolección del Hermitage ya en el siglo xx. Trasla Revolución de r9r7, cuando se nacionalizaronlas grandes colecciones de arte imperiales yprivadas de Rusia, el Hermitage, como museoestatal, seleccionó cuidadosamente obras deartistas como Friedrich, Ingres y Rodin paracubrir los vacíos existentes en sus colecciones.La carencia de obras impresionistas de Moneto Renoir y de las vanguardias europeas -Picasso,Matisse o van Dongen- se subsanó en 1948,

tras la disolución del Museo Estatal del ArteOccidental de Moscú, formado principalmentea partir de las colecciones de arte de dosmoscovitas, Serguéi Schukin e Iván Morózov.Desde entonces el Hermitage ha continuadoadquiriendo obras de arte contemporáneocomo el Cuadrado negro de Malévich, queingresó en la colección en zoo2.

They rangefrom rare and precious archaeological itemsincluding Scythian gold from Siberia to thedecorative arts of Europe, with jewelled itemsfrom the house ofFabergé, and European artfrom paintings and sculptures by Titian andBernini to rwentieth-century masters such as

Picasso and Kandinsky.The Hermitage, which was built both

as a palace and a museum, comprises anarchitectural complex on the banks oftheRiver Neva. It was begun by Peter the Great(reigned ú82-r7z), the Tsarwho foundedthe city ofSaint Petersburg in r7o3 takingParis and Amsterdam as models, and wassubsequently enlarged by his successors upto the time of the Russian Revolution inr9r7. Among the key frgures in its historywere Catherine the Great (reigned ry62-96),who built the Small Hermitage and the OldHermitage to house the imperial art collections(r77r-8), and her grandson Nicholas I (reignedr8z5-55), who added the New Hermitage. 'fhemuseum's holdings, which were nationalisedafter the r9r7 Revolution, largely derive fromthe collections of these three monarchs, whoseportraits open the exhibition.

One of the unique features of the Hermitageis its collection ofancient gold objects.

Displayed here in a special room, it includesgold ornaments made by the Scythian nomadsof Eurasia (fifth to third centuries BC), as

well as fourth-century BC jewellery from theSiberian Collection of Peter the Great.

The exhibition also includes an importantsection devoted to fifteenth- to twentieth-century European paintings, drawings andsculpture, which reveals the richness, originsand evolution of the Hermitage's collection.Reflecting Peter the Great's passion for art,the Hermitage has the finest collection ofseventeenth-century Dutch and Flemishpainting outside Holland, including worksby Rembrandt, Hals and Rubens. Hissuccessors, particularly Catherine theGreat and Alexander I, commissionedworks from leading artists such as Chardinand Thowaldsen also acquired importantcollections including those of the Berlinmerchant Gotzkowski andJosephineBonaparte. As a result they assembled a

The Tsars also collected decorative artsfrom Europe -like Fabergé's Cornflozaers andOats in a Vase- and .!vsia. Chinese and Indianseventeenth and eighteenth-century jewelsadorned with precious stones and colouredenamelled refect Russia's fascination withthe East.

On the first foor in Room C are the worksby European avant-garde artists. They enteredthe Hermitage's collection in the rwentiethcentury following the nationalisation ofthegreat Russian imperial and private collectionsafter the r9r7 Revolution. As a State museum,the Hermitage was able to make a carefulselection ofworks by artists such as Friedrich,Ingres y Rodin in order to fill existing gaps in itscollection. The lack of works by Impressionistssuch as Monet and Renoir and by Europeanavant-garde artists (Picasso, Matisse andVan Dongen) was remedied in 1948 with theclosure of the State Museum of 'W'estern Artin Moscow, which had housedworks formerlyin the collections of two Muscovite collectors,Sergei Shuckin and Ivan Morozov. Since thatdate the Hermitage has continued to acquiremodern art including Malevich's Black Square,

which entered its collection in zooz.
