Michael Conn’s journey into to unemployment is a study in rotten luck.
“In the last five years, I’ve been laid off twice, and this last time we lost our home and lost everything we had,” said Michael, a 46-year-old mechanic from Johnson County.
He had last worked for Alpha Natural Resources at Sidney in Pike County, and it was, for him, an extremely good job. The pay was good—$25 dollars an hour and 60 hours a week—and the company provided all his tools. It was the first time in his 28 years as a coal company mechanic that he had ever worked for anyone who did that.
But when the layoffs hit, Michael went from a full-time job to spending nearly every day on the road, looking for a new one.
“I was out 20 and 30 hours a week and more, just chasing a job,” he said.
