President’s Corner Yoko Azumaya

Akemashite omedeto gozaimasu. On behalf of the EJCA Board of Directors, I wish you all a Happy New Year! EJCA’s 2017 started with our annual New Year’s Potluck Dinner on Saturday, January 14, 2017. With many delicious dishes and sake as well as wonderful Tsugaru Shamisen performance and Mochi-tsuki, we had great time. There are some events we cherish every year, such as the New Year’s Potluck. But we also continuously experiment with new events and policies. Although EJCA has a long history, we are not satisfied just repeating what we have done in the past. We are always trying to find out if our vision and mission are current and what we can to achieve them. If you are interested in making 2017 EJCA activities even more grand, just give us the board members a shout. We are always listening!

Meeting with Counselor from the Embassy David Mitsui

On December 14, 2016, EJCA members Jim Hoyano, Takashi and Sanae Ohki, and myself were invited to meet with Mr. Takashi Futagi, Counsellor and Director, Information and Culture Centre at the Embassy of Japan in Ottawa and Mr. Yuzo Yoshioka, Deputy Consul-General, Calgary, at the EJCA Centre. This was Mr. Futagi’s first visit to Edmonton and Alberta. He was interested in getting to know EJCA and asked many questions about our history, the membership of EJCA and the Japanese community in Edmonton, in general. We had previously met Mr. Yoshioka when Consul General Tanabe of Calgary visited the EJCA Centre in June 2016. Current Activities at National Association of Japanese Canadians David Mitsui Since being installed as President of NAJC in September 2016, it has been a truly enriching experience learning and gaining a better understanding of the Japanese Canadian community’s deep history, regional similarities and differences, meeting with prominent Japanese Canadian community leaders, and representing the NAJC at meetings with the Embassy of Japan staff. For the past few months, the National Executive Board has been focused on strategic planning and budgeting. No sooner had we adjusted the 2016-17 budget when we had to complete the 2017-18 budget. We are always working 1.5 years into the future with our budgets because of our fiscal year starting on April 1

st and ending

March 31st.

The National Executive Board (NEB) met the weekend of January 14 and 15, 2017 in Toronto to work on NAJC’s 2017-18 budget. Plans are underway to have a video meeting with NAJC National Council members to approve the 2017-18 budget in the next month or so. I wish to announce that Brian Tomlinson was elected by the Young Leaders National Council to be their representative on the NAJC National Executive Board. Brian is a member of the Ottawa Japanese Community Association. He joined us at our meetings in Toronto. One of the newest projects being addressed by the NEB include the creation of the Special Committee on Reconciliation to negotiate with the Government of British Columbia the following:

It is: the 75th anniversary of the uprooting and Incarceration of 22,000 Japanese Canadians during WWII; the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge where 227 Issei volunteers helped Canada become a nation; the 70th

anniversary of the founding of the NAJC (initially called the NJCCA); the 150th Birthday of Canada as a Nation; and the 140th anniversary of the arrival of the first documented Japanese person, Manzo Nagano, to settle in Canada. Lastly, 2018 is the 30

EJCA New Year’s Party Kim Frey

On Saturday, January 14, 2017, 103 people from the EJCA gathered at the EJCA Centre to celebrate the New Year. Several volunteers met early in the afternoon to decorate the hall and make it look truly festive with red table coverings and traditional table centres. Guests started to arrive at the centre around 5 o’clock and enjoyed sake, wine and punch while exchanging new-year greetings and meeting members. (For your information, the sake served were “Hakkai” and “Amanoto”) Tamara Sutherland and Sakae Li volunteered to dress several members in kimono. People in kimono added to the Japanese festive flavour! To begin the evening, guests were treated to fresh ozoni, made courtesy of the Karaoke Club. Ozoni is the new year’s first dish after sake. In Japan, each area has its own recipe for ozoni. The only common ingredient is mochi, sweet rice cake. In some areas, ozoni is a miso-based broth with lots of vegetables and meat. In the Tokyo area ozoni is a clear broth with lemon/yuzu, onion or other greens and chicken. EJCA serves the Tokyo style ozoni. The soup was delicious and well received. A wonderful way to start off the evening. As is EJCA’s tradition, the New Year’s celebration is a potluck for members and their guests. Every year those who attend provide wonderful dishes and this year was no different. Attendees were treated to a lovely dinner of western and Japanese treats including a wonderful selection of desserts. As there were mostly only dirty dishes left at the end, it is safe to say that everyone who attended enjoyed the food. As for food, I should express special thanks to Mr. Toshitsugu Yokota who made authentic Japanese New Year’s dishes, not only one dish but SIX different dishes! They were Tazukuri (small dried fish), Kuri-kinton (chest nuts and mashed sweet potato), Matsutake-rice (Rice with Matsutake mushroom), vegetable Ni-mono, Namasu (pickled Daikon, carrots and apricot) and Hakusai Tsukemono with orange slivers. He makes special dishes every year for us! Is there anyone who will challenge Mr. Yokota for the variety and quality of dishes next year? After the meal, guests were welcomed by EJCA board president, Yoko Azumaya, and then treated to the beautiful music of Lena Utsumi. Ms. Utsumi played the tsugaru shamisen and performed two pieces: Jongara Bushi and Senbon Zakura. The second piece was accompanied by a video. Both pieces were very well done and entertaining. After Ms. Utsumi’s performance the mochi making began. The mochi was made with an Usu (a large tree-trunk with a hollowed out bowl) and a Kine (large wooden mallet)

…from prev page provided by the Consul-General of Japan in Calgary. Mr. Wataru Ito took the part of pounding the prepared steamed sweet rice and Mr. Susumu Kaneda was the brave soul who took the job of wetting and flipping the rice as it transformed into mochi. Once the first batch was completed, a second batch was made, this time with the help of some children volunteers. The prepared mochi was served to guests with shoyu and sugar and was delicious. After the mochi had been served, 18 members wearing kimono were invited up to have their picture taken and receive a small gift, and then door prizes were given out.

The grand prize was a flower arrangement courtesy of the Ikebana club, Mrs. Nelly Scheper. Other fortunate people won a sack of rice, sake, beautiful calendars, and good-luck bags. And as always, at the end of the evening, EJCA members all pitched in to make sure the hall was cleaned up and everything was put away. It was a great evening, with old and new friends able to come together and celebrate the New Year. The EJCA is proud to offer similar events throughout the year and encourages all members to join the 2018 New Year’s event.

Library Corner Cathy Tennant

In November last year, just in time for Christmas, EJCA held its first Book Sale. All the books had a Japanese theme and some were either difficult to find or not readily available elsewhere. Cookbooks, novels, autobiographies, children’s books, manga, Japanese language education books, origami paper, stickers and bookmarks were all displayed. The very successful sale was held over two days and looked after by the library volunteers and library “friends”. All the visitors enjoyed looking at the sale items, sitting and chatting over tea and snacks, and in some cases, learned more about EJCA’s events and activities. It was great tohave access to so many books relating to Japan, Japanese crafts and cooking, and written by Japanese Canadians. Over the next few months, look for new books and DVD’s. Some new books are already available.

Cooking: Simply Ramen, Kawaii Deco Sushi, Tanoshii Wagashi

Children: Suki’s Kimono, Arrietty Vol.1&2

Culture: Kyoto City of Zen, Kyoto Gardens, Kawaii Japan (not cookbook)

Nikkei: Japanese Canadian Stories from Japan

Origami: Simply Origami, Origami Greeting Cards, Origami You Can Use

We will also be reminding people who have borrowed items which are now at least 2 months overdue. Time goes by so quickly that it’s easy to forget to return these items but hopefully you will find the time to return them before you get a reminder. The library is open during office hours and remember you are always welcome to drop in for tea and a chat with library volunteers on Tuesday afternoons anytime between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m.

Wow the New Year’s feast! 新年会のご馳走、おいしいでした!

Heritage Festival 2017 Volunteers

Japanese Pavilion Chair , David Mueller

Again in 2017, EJCA will participate at the 42nd

Heritage Festival, August 5, 6 and 7. EJCA is one of the original 11 pavilions of the Heritage Festival that started in 1976. The festival has been growing since then. Recent years, 340,000 – 400,000 people attend the festival each year. The July 31, 1986 issue of the Edmonton Journal commented on the festival's longevity and enduring success: "The key to the continued success of the Edmonton Heritage Festival is the bringing together of all the ethnic groups of the Edmonton area to share their cultural heritage, with emphasis on arts and crafts, food, costume, national dress and song and dance. The Heritage Festival Committee is looking for someone to assist with organization and management of the Craft/Culture section of the Japanese Pavilion. In this position, you will be working with the committee to help plan, organize and display craft/sales items, cultural displays and performances for Japanese Pavilion. The committee will meet 1 to 2 times per month to discuss progress, direction and challenges. We strive to keep meetings short, focused and enjoyable. Accepting this position does NOT require you to spend vast amounts of time at the festival (unless you want to), we will schedule volunteers to help run the pavilion on-site. This is an excellent opportunity for you to showcase your craftiness, management skill and to work for an incredible festival in our city. If you are interested, contact Dave Mueller via email at [email protected].

10 January February 2017

Our member, Mrs. Aiko Murakami, will be 100 years old in March 2017! Aiko has been an EJCA member since 1989. She moved to Toronto in 2006 but is still keeping her EJCA membership. CONGRATULATIONS! Her son Mike sent us Aiko’s personal history.

Greetings EJCAers and warm wishes for a Happy New Year from Toronto Mike Murakami When my mother Aiko heard that Sanae Ohki wanted me to write a story about her life for the Moshi Moshi she was very touched. She wishes to thank EJCA for remembering her, as she has many fond memories and thinks often about her dear Edmonton friends. So, for brevity I tried to highlight some of her life in BC and Ontario that you may not know about. Three months after she was born (March 1917) in Steveston, BC, Aiko's father Shinjiro Kondo moved his family to Victoria, BC's capital city. The family settled in Victoria's thriving Chinatown, at 507 Fisgard St. beside the Shimizu Rice Mill, and not far from the Kondo fishing boats. During the depression Aiko graduated from Victoria High School while working as a domestic. Her conscientious attitude and work habits earned her the respect of her employers. One employer was Mr. & Mrs Straith. Mr. Straith later became a distinguished BC MP. He showed his gratitude and admiration by helping Aiko and her family during the uprooting of JCs after Pearl Harbour. Mr. Straith also bravely lobbied against the harsh treatment of JCs and the deportation of JCs to Japan. By 1939, Aiko was involved as a Victoria rep with the Japanese Canadian Citizens League. JCCL sent a delegation of Nisei to Ottawa to plead unsuccessfully for the franchise. Aiko was in Vancouver when the world of Japanese Canadians turned into turmoil after Pearl Harbour. Then before being forced from the BC coast she married Dave Murakami (Tom Shoyama was Dave's best man) at the Powell Street United Church. Their "honeymoon" trip was being entrained on a hard wooden bench to the BC interior along with hundreds of other uprooted JCs. (described in the book "Gateway to Promise") Between 1942 and 1947 the Kaslo and New Denver camps became their "home.'' where Aiko taught grades 6 and 7 and became a New Denver Orchard School principal. It was also where Dave was hired by the Security Commission to truck away camp garbage and deliver locally grown produce to the camps. He was later appointed to camp photographer and learned watch and jewellery repair through a correspondence course. According to the book "Teaching in Canadian Exile", in 1942 when temporary classes were being organized for Hastings Park, which acted as a holding centre for JCs until the internment camps could be erected. next page

… from prev page “Hide (Hyodo) Shimizu was the only fully-accredited JC teacher. As a result, Nisei university grads, along with undergrads and high school graduates were recruited to take B.C. correspondence courses to qualify as teachers for the large number of children headed for internment camps. Eventually, schools were set up at all 8 internment camps. Teachers followed the curriculum set by the B.C. Ministry of Education and some schools apparently became so good that their reputation spread among local non-Japanese residents. “Some of the residents said the Japanese Canadian teachers were better than the regular teachers, so they wanted their own children to come to our schools, but they couldn’t get permission because they weren’t Japanese Canadian.” Some of the internment camp teachers were nationally or internationally recognized later in their careers. For example, Hide Shimizu, who supervised the internment camp school system, was later named to the Order of Canada. Former camp students include David Suzuki, Dr. (Mo) Watanabe and Dr. Henry Shimizu. By 1947 Aiko and Dave had moved to Toronto (via Hamilton) with 4 year old Mike. But after facing 'anti-Jap' sentiment finding work and accommodation Aiko decided to find a safe home to receive family members coming from the camps. After much searching by foot with Mike in tow she charmed an elderly Scottish lady who lived at 83 Metcalfe Street in the Cabbage Town district to sell her house to her. Aiko's relatives wired what they could, the down payment was made and the deal was done. Eventually the 'toe-hold' house temporarily accommodated up to 21 Kondo kin – as a kind of 'underground railway' transition shelter. In 1950 Aiko enrolled in the Watch Making and Commercial courses at Ryerson Politechnical Institute (now Ryerson University). But after graduating she decided watch making was not her cup of tea. However, in 1955, Aiko applied for a secretarial position at the Daiichi Bussan Kaisha. At this company which later became Mitsui and Company Aiko wrote letters and cables for Japanese managers, etc. Later, as executive secretary she also helped the company families with their transition to Canada. She retired from Mitsui after 17 years. Many of the Mitsui presidents and wives, still keep in touch with her. For her work as a camp teacher and principal, president of the Toronto Nisei Women's Club and years of work in the Redress movement Aiko received a JCCC Pioneer Achievement Award. The Toronto Nisei Women’s Club's remarkable pioneering community service gave birth to the idea of the Momiji Senior’s Centre, a Japanese Canadian seniors home in Toronto, bazaars and early community and cultural programs for the newly built Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.

Fast forward 17 years, and treasuring many delightfully delicious Edmonton memories Aiko returned to Toronto to re-engage with her Ontario family and elderly siblings. MATSU NO KAI CLUB (55+) NEWS Louise & Peter Wong The Matsu no Kai Club members would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year! We hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to the brand new 2017 year. During the last year, the club hosted 11 monthly meetings, 8 club outings and a Christmas lunch. This was all run by an Executive of four officers and many volunteers. Though we had final farewells for a couple of senior members in 2016, we saw many more new members join our merry group. The club will start the year with 30 members. We hope to engage more EJCA “55+” members to get involved and join the Matsu no Kai during the year!

13 January February 2017

…from prev page At the November meeting, our talented members made polar fleece scarves and reindeer candy canes which were donated to the Bissell Centre and given to the homeless at Christmas. Everyone enjoyed working on this project which allowed our Club to give back to the community at large.

Since there was no December meeting, our members were treated to lunch at Plates International Buffet. With a variety of foods ranging from sushi to prime rib, everyone was able to fill their plates and still have room for dessert. The Club meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except for December) at the EJCA Centre starting at 11 AM. Members are able to pre-order a special bento lunch most months but we do host special meal events from time to time. Depending on members’ interests, various monthly outings are planned for groups to attend (concerts, theatre events, local attractions, etc.). Please contact the Club President, Peter C. Wong, at ‘[email protected]’ or 780-487-7099 home phone for further details on up-coming outings and meetings or to pre-order your lunches by Friday before the monthly meetings.
