    network of 1062 km of 1067mm gauge, single track of which

    848km is the mainline and 214 km is on branch lines or spurs

    In 2001, two years before the concession ZRL moved 1.98

    million tonnes of traffic. Today that is 667,000 tonnes

    ZRL had and has a total of 37 locomotives (12 GT ,17 U20C

    and 8 U15C) and has a total of 2201 wagons of various types.

    The New ZR Business Model

    BUSINESS OUTLINE CHARACTERISTICS

    It is proposed herein that the business meets the expectations of the

    Zambian people. Among these outcomes are:

    To reconstruct the entire business to be profitable, self sustaining and

    become a major contributor to the exchequer accounts;

    To become a major employer that creates apprenticeship jobs of around

    10,000 during the reconstruction phases, and which reduce during full

    operation period to 3000 5000 pensionable jobs. In addition, there will bearound 3,000 4,000 jobs to be created in the supply chain as ZR intends

    to source 75% - 80% of parts, components and services from businesses in

    Zambia. ZR vision on employment is to maximise human capacity for

    maximum productivity that will make it a flag ship of the Nation;

    To build a solid partnership with satellite businesses that will enhance

    further ZR core business and profit margins.
