THE INSIDE SHOWS

In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the debris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they be as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' smallest speck-like flaws.

And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus images, is true: What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh. By and by, the inside will show through. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Lenten Regulations for Observing the Penitential Season

The penitential season of Lent begins on Ash Wednes-day (March 6th) and continues until the evening of Holy Thursday (April 18th). Easter is April 21st this year.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding from age 14 onwards.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection. (USCCB website).

By the threefold discipline of fasting, alms-giving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake the serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious sin.

The U.S. bishops issued a statement on penitential observance: “On Weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of grave human needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge particularly during Lent, generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing of all things needed to translate our duty to practice penance into a means of implementing the right of the poor to their part of our abundance.” (Denver Catholic 2014)

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS & AIDES – I’m tugging at your heart. Our Substitutes are so IMPORTANT; and always needed for all sessions, sometimes with short notice. Responsible teens may be an Aide as long as you are involved in some sort of Youth Program.

KIDS – We’re missing you – don’t be shy, come and learn about your faith, and make good friends! It’s more than just receiving the sacraments, it’s about meeting Jesus.

Adult Ed. Sandy Gross

Lenten Scripture Study Come enhance your prayer life and learn to pray. Join us this Lent as we encounter our Lord and learn how to pray and praise Him as we study the Psalms.

At the heart of the Bible are the Psalms, prayers from God that help us learn to pray. The Holy Spirit inspired them. Israel sang them. Christ himself prayed them, as did our Blessed Mother. These sacred hymns become our heartfelt response to God’s loving and wondrous deeds for us. Their words captivate the imagination and draw us into a deeply personal encounter with God.

Join Jeff Cavins, Sarah Christmyer, and Dr. Tim Gray as they show you how to establish a deeply personal dialogue with God through the Psalms.

Join us for Psalms: The School Prayer for 11 sessions at St. Francis of Assisi in Longmont beginning Tuesday, March 5, noon – 1:45 or Thursday, March 7, at 6:15 – 8:00 PM.

Look for the Psalms Registration forms in the narthex, register, and leave your form/$ in the office mailbox in c/o Sandy Gross. The cost for all materials is $25. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Classes involve watching a DVD, discussion groups, and some homework.

It’s going to be great! We can’t wait to see you!

Religious Ed. Continued

Yes, we know that your family can be busy; however, we truly hope your child will continue their religious education long after receiving the sacraments. Your/their faith is a life-long learning process! Set some faith priorities!

FIRST COMMUNION DRESS – We recently received a donation of a beautiful white First Communion dress, size 8. If your daughter, granddaughter, or if you know anyone who can use this dress, you are most welcome to have it. Please contact Helen.

PRINT OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY – If you left a sepia tone picture of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for free on the table by the church, please contact Helen. It’s so beautiful that I would like to order more copies. Thank you!

TODAY’S JOKE – Q: What do snowmen call their offspring? A: Chill-dren

CATHOLIC RADIO – 1060 am – KRCN – “Change your station, change your life.” This week was Pledge Drive Week. Your monetary donation is always needed to keep our Catholic Radio Stations on the air. It’s always interesting to hear the local guests tell their story. Tuesday was Fr. Ken Przybyla from St. Francis of Assisi in Colorado Springs. He gave an interesting history of their church. Wednesday was Father Frank Quesada, from Corpus Christi, who just a delight; and was so enthusiastic about Catholic Radio. He encouraged his fellow priests to contribute.

BILL’S ADVENTURES – Mom somehow made it really hard to lie, even though the boys thought their story was perfectly legitimate. They cried, and felt terrible as they ended up having to tell mom the whole truth. They explained how they wanted it just to be an adventure, not really dis-obeying her. They knew in their hearts that they had disobeyed mom, and that was wrong; and there would be a punishment to deal with.

RE CHALLENGE – When you have to face the truth what do you do?

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CALENDAR: March 5/6 – CLASS + Sacramental Prep March 12/13 – Class HELP, HELP! – NEED MEN & WOMEN TO TAKE COMMUNION TO HOMEBOUND – We are once again in need of people willing to take Holy Communion to those who are homebound. Where can I eat a vegetarian-style meal during Lent? Eating a simple vegetarian meal at home would be the most sacrificial option, but for those times we

cannot, there are many restaurants where we can find a vegetarian meal. For seafood we carry: Red Lobster, Chili's, Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Red Robin, or TGI Friday's. In a hurry? We

have: McDonald's, Wendy's, Noodles, Panera, Carl's Jr, or Subway. How about vegetarian pizza? We carry Lefty’s, Papa Murphy’s, Pizza Hut, and Old Chicago. Stop by the gift card counter and get your choice today!

ATTENTION: TO THOSE WHO BOUGHT $50 KING SOOPERS GIFT CARDS IN FEBRUARY: There is a difficulty with some cards. If they start with 6006495903338236 and then end with 894, 910, 928, 944, or 985, please bring them back to the office. They will be replaced.

Mmm the Aroma of Fresh Brewed Coffee! We have gift cards from: Starbucks, Ziggi's, Panera, McDonald's, Burger King, Perkins, as well as many other restaurants. Please stop by the gift card table and get your

cup of 'java'.
