• natural or alternative medicine > drugs currently out in the market

• Due to less artificial ingredients were used• undergone less several processes than the

commercially-made drugs,• cost-effective.

• Plants - long been used as principal ingredients of traditional medicine in the Philippines

Introduction

Page 3: Effective Dose of Euphorbia Hirta on Staphylococcus Aureus-Induced

• Among this plant species is Euphorbia hirta L.• leaves are used in the treatment of:

• cough Coryza• hay asthma bronchial infections

• bowel complaints worm infestations• Wound kidney stones• boils

Commonly called snake weed or asthma weed

In the Philippines, known as tawa-tawa or gatas-gatas

alkaloids, tannins and flavonoids as antibacterial properties

Euphorbia hirta

•General:- To determine the effective dose of

Euphorbia hirta extracts, eliciting its antimicrobial property

•Specific: - To identify other factors that may give

discrepancies that would affect maximum effect of the dose

Objectives

Page 6: Effective Dose of Euphorbia Hirta on Staphylococcus Aureus-Induced

• cost effective alternative for antimicrobial drugs• to determine susceptibility and resistance of a specific microorganism to Euphorbia hirta• reduced artificial process in producing the agent

Significance

Page 7: Effective Dose of Euphorbia Hirta on Staphylococcus Aureus-Induced

•East and West Africa: extracts are used in treatment of asthma and respiratory tract inflammations. •Madagascar: used for coughs, chronic bronchitis and other pulmonary disorders. •Angola: widely used in against diarrhea and dysentery, especially amoebic dysentery.Niger: extracts or exudates are used as ear drops and in the treatment of boils, sore and promoting wound healing

Background of the Study

Page 8: Effective Dose of Euphorbia Hirta on Staphylococcus Aureus-Induced

•Antibacterial effect: Camellia sinensis L. vs. Euphorbia hirta L. against dysentery causing Shigella spp. (Vero cell line) •The antibacterial effects of a methanol extract of E. hirta was demonstrated in vitro using species of Shigella. •The extract was non-cytotoxic and antibacterial.

Background of the Study

Page 9: Effective Dose of Euphorbia Hirta on Staphylococcus Aureus-Induced

• potential antibacterial activity against 5 medically important bacterial strains: Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes, Proteus vulgaris and Salmonella typhimurium. • antibacterial activity of aqueous and methanol extracts: determined by agar disk diffusion and agar well diffusion method. •methanol extracts more active than aqueous extracts. •plant extracts were more active against Gram-positive bacteria than against Gram-negative bacteria. •most susceptible bacteria: B. subtilis, S. epidermidis•most resistant bacteria: P. vulgaris, S. typhimurium

Background of the Study

Page 10: Effective Dose of Euphorbia Hirta on Staphylococcus Aureus-Induced

•Euphorbia hirta ethanol extract is hematologically not toxic to rats•antibacterial activities: presence of tannins, alkaloids and flavonoids which were identified in the extract. •significant in the health care delivery system •justifies the use of the plant in the treatment of sores, boils, wounds and control of dysentery and diarrhea

•E. hirta plants will be collected•The collected specimens will be confirmed•Dried leaves will be extracted with 95% ethanol

Plant Materials

Page 14: Effective Dose of Euphorbia Hirta on Staphylococcus Aureus-Induced

•Pure culture of S. aureus containing a concentration of 0.5 x 10^7 cfu/ml of innoculum, suspended in saline solution will be obtained

Preparation of inoculum

•18 rats will be used for the investigation.•The subjects will be acclimatized and will be in good health•The rats will be shaved at the lumbosacral region.•A pair of 2 cm incisions will be done. One on each side.
