Dear ESRI Conference Participants,
Thank you for choosing to participate in the 14th annual Educational Symposium for Research and Innovations (ESRI) at The George Washington University, Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD). We are excited to have our fellow students take part in this student-led academic conference which will provide you with the opportunity to highlight your research and contributions to the academic literature while receiving feedback from your peers, alumni, and faculty.
In case you have not participated in ESRI before, all of our conference sessions are devoted to research-in-progress, dissertation work, and professional development for our students – within each of these sessions lies an opportunity to share academic work, receive constructive feedback, and network with others in the field of education and human development.
We are honored to host our lunchtime keynote speaker, our very own Dr. Michael J. Feuer, Dean of the Graduate School Education and Human Development. He will be sharing the highlights of his new book, The Rising Price of Objectivity: Philanthropy, Government, and the Future of Education Research. We will also have Jim Kohlmoos, a leading educational expert with decades of experience at the intersections of research and policy, who will serve as a discussant during the keynote. We are thrilled to have both Dr. Feuer and Mr. Kohlmoos speak with us about such pressing topics during the conference. We would be remiss if we did not share a heartfelt and sincere thank you to all of our presenters, paper discussants and facilitators, volunteers, alumni, and the ESRI planning team that made ESRI 2017 possible! The Graduate School of Education and Human Development continues to be a prominent voice in the national dialogue on education, thanks in large part to our current and emerging scholars.
We look forward to connecting with you during ESRI 2017!
Best, Marie Balo Lou Candace Morgan ESRI 2017 Student Co-Chairs

The Funding Conundrum:
The New Normal of Education Research?
Michael J. Feuer, Ph.D.
Dean and Professor of Education Policy The George Washington University
In today’s social and political climate, there are many cross currents that could have significant consequences for the future of education research. Uncertainties about government support, changing patterns of philanthropy, and arguments about what constitutes reliable and useful “evidence” are converging in what may prove to be a major storm threatening the shorelines of scholarship and educational progress. These are issues that Dean Michael Feuer has written about in his new book,The Rising Price of Objectivity: Philanthropy, Government, and the Future of Education Research, which is the topic of his ESRI keynote address. A leading expert with decades of experience at the intersections of research and policy, Jim Kohlmoos will draw on his well of knowledge about past efforts to abolish or curb government–sponsored research in his response to Dean Feuer’s talk.
Michael Feuer is Dean of the Graduate School of Education and Human Development and Professor of Education Policy at the George Washington University, and President of the National Academy of Education. In 2014 President Obama appointed him to the National Board of Education Sciences. Feuer is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Educational Research Association, and co-chair of the Consortium for Applied Studies in Jewish Education (CASJE). He consults regularly to educational institutions and government in the US, Israel, Europe, and the Middle East.
