Wednesday, August 16KEYNOTE9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Successful Campus Repositionings

Thomas Meyers, Ziegler and Steve Fetyko, UMRC

We know that among the largest senior living providers, roughly 75% plan to grow through expansions and repositionings. While new location growth has not returned to pre-recession levels, reinvestment activities have been quite common in recent years. This session will cover the key drivers for organization repositioning projects and trends in how providers are reinvesting, such as healthcare away from the institutional nursing home to expansion of common areas and addition of specific memory care units. Additionally, we will discuss leveraging staff and internal expertise, effective communications in order to ensure a successful repositioning effort and how obstacles were overcome. We will also examine repositionings incorporating expansions, balancing capital planning for multiple projects and how to ensure an ongoing culture of reinvestment in one’s physical plant. Case studies, data and trends will be shared that represent successful project outcomes.

LEADERSHIP & BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Successful Leadership through A Merger & Acquisition

Ken Robbins Jr., Pilgrim Manor and Julie Kearney, Kearney & Associates

Mergers and acquisitions are happening in the senior living industry at a record place and studies show that leaders are often ill-equipped to make the transition successful. Participants will learn more about the merger and acquisition process, as well as the strategies to successfully lead their organization through a change of ownership. A case study will be presented on an acquisition of a non-profit senior living community by an out-of-state owner.

2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. LeadingAge NY Technology Solutions: Building Blocks to Financial Success

In this session, participants will learn how using these tools can directly influence MDS accuracy, quality of care and ultimately payment.

4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. CMS Quality Reporting Program for SNFs & Review and Correct Reporting

Sophie Campbell, Baker Tilly

The Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Quality Reporting Program (QRP) was implemented on October 1, 2016 as a result of the IMPACT Act of 2014 in which the secretary was required to implement clinical assessment instruments with data elements that would be the same across post-acute settings including LTCH, IRF, SNF and HHA. The Act further requires that CMS develop and implement qual-ity measures from five quality measure domains using standardized assessment data. This session will provide an outline of the SNF QRP along with the MDS items that are included in the quality measures that have been developed as a result of the IMPACT Act requirements. During this session we will also discuss the process that has been outlined by CMS for the review and correction of reports submitted that impact the SNF QRP to calculate the quality measures.

FINANCE STRATEGIES10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Cyber Security in Healthcare: What You Need To Know

John DiMaggio, BlueOrange Compliance

A good Cyber security defense contains multiple facets including technical, physical and administrative controls. This session will cover Cyber security basics, risk, prevention, preparation and response in a healthcare environment.

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Debt Without Regret: Finding the Perfect Financing Structure

Lynn Daly, BB&T Capital Markets

In a relatively low interest rate environment, with so many attractive debt structure options available to senior living providers, how do you find the structure that is right for your organization? How do you avoid financing decisions that will hamstring your organization 5 to 10 years from now? To answer these questions, we will explore the options available to senior living providers and point to the problem areas with each structure that could lead to problems down the road. Additionally, we will look at the history of financing trends in the industry to shed light on what is coming next and how what’s next should affect your decision- making today.

1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Market Feasibility Disrupted: Rethinking Industry Norms

Dana Wollschlager & Jamie Timoteo, Plante Moran Living Forward

Historically, senior living providers seeking expansion follow a process: secure a market study, look at demand and penetration rates, and either pull the trigger on a project or walk away. With today’s complex industry factors and increasingly competitive market, the marketplace is starting to identify deficiencies in market analysis and due diligence reports. During this session, we’ll reevaluate the status quo, uncovering key metrics that may need additional due diligence to make sound expansion decisions.

2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. How to Be Successful in the New Payment Environment: So Many Changes!

Julie Kearney, Kearney & Associates

The presentation will review the new ACO, Medicare Advantage, Bundled Payment programs and the New Case Management of these plans. We will also review the Healthy Michigan and Manage Medicaid plans. Learn about the impact, what your organization needs to do to prepare for what’s currently happening and what’s coming, as well as how to avoid write-offs and non-payments. In closing, this session will share what you can to do to embrace the impending changes for the overall financial success of your organization.

4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. M&A and Financing Trends in Senior Housing

Brad Competty & Brendan Healy, Lancaster Pollard

This presentation will highlight the current market dynamics regarding mergers and acquisitions in the senior housing sector. It will also provide an overview of how current debt and equity providers are assessing properties for acquisition and how providers are positioning assets for a sale. In addition, it will provide an overview of the financing vehicles that senior living providers are using to fund new construction or for refinancing their existing debt while highlighting the alternatives available. Lastly, it will walk providers through understanding how the market dynamic of 2017 compares to that of previous years and how it will be affected in the upcoming years due to the change in the Presidency and ultimately why it is prudent to evalu-ate your current organization’s needs for divestiture, acquisition or refinancing.

Thursday, August 17KEYNOTE 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Critical Techniques for Recruiting Talented Coworkers & Advancing Staff Retention

Clint Maun, Maun-Lemke

Education DescriptionsLEADERSHIP & BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Managing Managed Care

Laurie Horvath & Sophie Campbell, Baker Tilly

Managed care participation has been penetrating states throughout the country and increasing the demands on providers. Providers must know what is expected of them when they begin to negotiate managed care contracts and whether they can meet these expectations. Providers must recognize the changes that will be expected to occur in their organizations with managed care contracting. This process begins with pre-admission and continues through discharge. AS managed care contracting expands across states, providers must be prepared for contract negotiations for both Medicare skilled and Medicaid long term care and be prepared to defend the level of care and services they are providing. Additionally, providers must be aware of the financial impact to the organization related to managed care contracts and admission of managed care residents. This session will address each of these areas and provide recommendations from experience in states where managed care is prevalent.
