Elsie de Wolfe

Responsible for some of the most iconic American interior

design in the Industrial period, including works like the

Frick mansion, Elsie de Wolfe was an innovator in

minimalist design with logistical qualities. Mansions

needed to look great, but they also needed to be easily

cleaned as well. Her style of interior decoration was

primarily Victorian, but her introduction of new colors and

tones made her a trendsetter. She's also responsible for the

concept of potted plants in the home, along with writing

tables that could be comfortably used.

Dorothy Draper

“Draper was to decorating what Chanel was to fashion,”

said Carleton Varney. As the president of Dorothy Draper

& Co. Inc, they should know Dorothy Draper was an

incredibly influential interior decorator during the 1920's,

1930's, and 1940's, developing a style that was referred to

as “Modern Baroque.” Her way of interior decorating

incorporated very bright colors, very involved patterns,

and the usage of entire fields of visual landscape to display

patterns and prints that commanded attention. Her

insistence on very bright, vivid use of color is still

influential in interior design.

Philippe Starck

A French designer with an extensive body of work and

ideas that continue to influence global thinking on interior

design. Beginning his career in the 1980's, Philippe Starck

was worked on interior design in his native France, Japan,

London, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, and

more. He is known for his imaginative use of objects, and

their shapes, and in the taking of unconventional choices

for interior design for the purposes of evoking a soulful

experience. His choices are also noted for being social

conscience; he advocates for a “democratic design,” and

indeed, pushes the limits of what can be done with green

building and design concepts with the intent of making

them feasible for mass production.
