The long and short - what is it?Edmodo provides a way for teachers and students to share notes, links, and files. Teachers have the ability to send alerts, events, and assignments to students. Edmodo also has a public component which allows teachers to post any privately shared item to a public timeline and RSS feed.

Uses common web 2.0 technologies familiar to students; blogs, RSS, Twitter, commenting, etc.

Provides the ‘most commonly used’ features teachers have on their personal websites; blogs, calendars, events, assignments and grades.

Multiple teachers can use the services, students have access to all teachers with same login.

Teachers can post send alerts to students via text message, twitter, or email.

Teachers can post files, links, embedded content like YouTube or audio, students can commend on posts, or discuss as threads.

Edmodo is a simple, free, web based system for managing the basics of an online course. If you want to alert students of events, post assignments, and have them feedback on posts, this is the way to go. It is quick and easy.

If, as a school, we were looking for a tool to universalize our online classroom presence, this is a good option. Multiple teacher access with one student login.

Teachers can store documents for download, publish syllabi, manage a classroom calendar. Students can subscribe to multiple alert methods.

You could post a document, students could download it, complete it and send it back to you, then you could grade it right online. Students could get instant feedback on graded materials.

History Course

Topic: Take-Home Essay Test

Materials: Edmodo account, essay questions written in an editable pdf, word document or text document format.

Method: Assign a take-home test. Go to your Edmodo page, create an assignment, upload the essay document, set the due date, and alert the class to the post.

Students then login to the website, download the file, fill it out, save it, and re-post it back to the teacher. Teacher assigns grades as needed.

Very user friendly interface makes setup a snap.

Edline-like competeness and simplicity, common login for multiple teachers.

Free setups, easy wizards for creating pages, calendars, and managing documents and disseminating codes for permissions to site. Students can sign up for email or text alerts.

Teachers can manage and grade online homeworks, send grades to students.

Students can post notes, files, links, and discuss.

Little to no design flexibility. Teachers are limited to color schemes preset by the system.

Functionality cannot be extended beyond the ‘out-of-the-box’ application.
