Our Flower and Garden Show August 11-12, 2018 - Stephanie Girardi Our show is a few weeks away and I hope that all of you are planning what to enter and how to participate. I will bring all of the show schedules, signup sheets and entry tags to the August meeting. If you haven't exhibited before please feel free to try just a few entries. We do encourage children to enter also. They have a simpler schedule that is available for you to hand out to any interested children you may know. Both schedules can also be downloaded from our website. We start to set up the exhibit hall on Friday afternoon around 1. It should be ready for you to start placing your entries around 3. Many members bring in their potted material on Friday evening and their cut plant material on Saturday morning. You can drive around to the back of the building to unload your material if you ask for the gate code at the garden entrance. The code changes daily and you need to punch it into the gate that allows you to drive around the back of the gardens to the portico on the west side of the building. We try to have carts in the west bonsai court for you to use to transport your entries safely. On Saturday morning the room opens around 7. There are always people to help you get your entries set and answer questions. You have until 10:15 to get your entries properly placed and labeled. All entries must have an entry tag with the plant information and your exhibitor number on it. If you didn't get a number at the August meeting you get one the morning of the show. Please

refer to your show schedule on the proper way to exhibit. The show is judged from 10:30 to 12 on Saturday. Club members are needed to act as clerks for the judges. You follow the judging teams and attach ribbons to the entry tags as they go. At 12 the show opens to the public. If you have worked as a clerk you can join the judges for lunch. We will have a plant sale this year managed by Heddi. Please put in some time helping her to sell plants to the show visitors. The sale is an important source of revenue for our club and must be staffed to succeed. The show is the biggest event of our year and we need members to participate. We are so fortunate to have the best venue in the area and we need to do our part to have full tables of entries and have the show fully staffed. I hope you will be able to dig a dozen or more of your perennials to bring to our garden show for selling at the August Garden Show. Pot them up now and get them going. These items are always good sellers at low prices. Thanks...Charlene Ackerman

Our GNS Garden Walk – Sunday ONLY 12:00-5:00 Sam and Andi Solomon 620 Carriage Way, Deerfield We have a semi-shaded garden. We started growling hostas 15 years ago and now have 175 varieties, including all 5 sizes. Interspersed are varieties of ferns. We enjoy foliage plants and thus have coleus and caladiums. For splashes of color, there are annuals off of our patio. Come see what can be crammed into a 1/4 of an acre. SUNDAY ONLY 12-5 Rich and Lana Gernady, 6509 Palma Lane, Morton Grove Our garden is a work in progress with flowers in bloom from March to November. It includes perennials, annuals, roses, vines, hostas, hanging baskets, flowering bushes, fruit trees, blueberries, and even a potted tomato tree. Garden critters and bird houses everywhere add to the charm. Everything is done by the owners, from brick edging and tree trimming to construction of the glass house. A never-ending work of love. Everyone welcome. Finding Palma Lane can be tricky, as there are several Palmas and they are not connected. This Palma is just south of Golf Road and east of Waukegan Road. From Waukegan

Road drive east on Golf to Nashville and turn right. Go to Palma Lane and turn left SUNDAY ONLY 12-5

Gerry Palmer Update

Gerry is making progress in his rehabbing at the Fairview Senior Center, 435 Staren Rd.,Whitewater, Wisconsin 53190. His spirits are great, and he was most appreciative of your cards sent by our Secretary, Carol Sternal. He would love to visit us at the show this month. His goal is to get back to his home in Lake Forest, once his motor skills regenerate. In the meantime, give him a call at 262-473-2140, mail him a card, or send an email message to him at [email protected]. Gerry's doing some research on the Jr. Vegetable competition for the upcoming show contacting possible entrants, quite a dedicated past president. Submitted by,Charlene Ackerman
