So, he considered it very necessary to have additional airport elsewhere in Bali, namely in Buleleng. AURORA, Colo. — B a t m a n s t a r Christian Bale visited survivors of the Colo-rado theater shooting Tuesday, and thanked medical staff and po-lice officers who re-sponded to the attack

that killed 12 people and injured 58 others. Bale visited with little advance warning and also stopped by a makeshift memorial to victims near the movie theater that was showing “The Dark Knight Rises” when the gunfire erupted.

Carey Rottman, one of those injured in Friday’s shooting, posted two photos of himself with Bale on his Facebook page. Janie Bowman-Hayes, assistant vice president of surgical services at sister hospital Swedish Medical Center, said she and co-workers were attending a luncheon at The Medical Center of Au-rora to thank staff who tended to victims. “When we got there, then we found out he was there,” she said.

Bale, humble and dressed casually in a black T-shirt and jeans, thanked the staff, shook hands and agreed to have his photo taken with employees, Bowman-Hayes said.

“He just said he wanted to come to

thank all of us because he has been think-ing about this. He knows the whole world has been thinking about this,” she said.

“He took it upon himself to come and thank us.” An online campaign had urged Bale to visit survivors of the shooting.

“Everybody understands who Tonto is, even if we hadn’t seen the show, and we understood it wasn’t a good thing,” said Ross, a member of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana who lives and has family in the Suquamish Tribe, outside Seattle. “Why else would you tease someone with that?”

The making of a new “Lone Ranger” Disney movie, and the announcement that Johnny Depp is playing sidekick Tonto, have reawakened feelings about a charac-ter that has drawn much criticism over the years as being a Hollywood creation guilty of spreading stereotypes.

The film is still in production, but Indian Country has been abuzz about it for months, with many sharing opinions online and a national Native publication running an oc-casional series on the topic. Some Native

Americans welcome the new movie, which is slated for release next summer. Parts were filmed on the Navajo Nation with the tribe’s support, and an Oklahoma tribe recently made Depp an honorary member.

But for others, the “Lone Ranger” represents a lingering sore spot — one that goes back to the 1950s television version of Tonto, who spoke in broken English, wore buckskin and lacked any real cultural traits.

Depp’s role attracted particular attention in April when producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a picture of the actor in his Tonto costume. He had on black and white face paint, an intense gaze, a black bird at-tached to his head and plenty of decorative feathers.

“The moment it hit my Facebook news-

feed, the updates from my friends went nutso,” wrote Natanya Ann Pulley, a doctorate student at Uni-versity of Utah, in an essay for the online magazine McSweeney’s. For Pulley and her friends, the portrayal of Native Americans in Western movies is getting old.

“I’m worried about the Tonto figure becoming a parody or a commercialized figure that doesn’t have any dimension or depth. Or consideration for contemporary context of Na-tive Americans,” she said.

Denpasar (Bali Post) –Car wheel holed seemed

to be keep on happening and none of its crime actors have been captured by police. This time it happened to Anas Fauzi (34) a BCA Bank customer who just took IDR 490 million cash got robbed around Galael Kuta, Raya Kuta Street. It is not known the identity of the person that caused victim to stop and change her car’s wheel which is when the cash placed in a laptop bag taken away. “We don’t know how much loss is actually the victim is experiencing and we

will also coordinate with BCA Bank to check it,” Head of Kuta Police, PC Putu Dedi Udiyana, last Tuesday (23/7).

From information it is stated the robbery act took place around 3.30 pm local time when victim with a driver was di-rected by their boss, who owns a contractor company, to take cash at BCA Bank Kuta branch. After they took it and going back by passing Galael Kuta, they weren’t suspicious being followed yet the car’s wheel broke. Driver then went out to repair it while Fauzi stayed in

the car to look over the bag. Sadly, Fauzi went out as well to look at the wheel which then used by robber to take the bag as the door was opened. Victim just realised it happened after the wheel repairing was done then reported to Kuta Police straight away. Based on vic-tim’s report, officers will re-create the scene then analyse and evaluate the case. So far victim hasn’t been checked as she is still shocked while the case is being investigated also fast attack troops sent to find the robbers. (kmb21)

As field observation, a number of houses at Dasong hamlet that were once flooded now looked to have dried out. Nevertheless, the debris carried by the water could not have been totally cleaned up. Weeds previously spreading throughout their courtyard were still clearly visible. They were

cleaning up their house so that it could be occupied comfortably.

Headman of Pancasari, Wayan Darsana, justified if his residents had started to re-occupy their home after the water of Lake Buyan began receding. Accord-ing to him, due to the overflow of the lake water, a total of 33

families should flee to the house of their relatives. Now, most of the 33 families had returned to their home.

“Most of them have been re-occupying their home. How-ever, approximately 5 families still choose to take refuge,” he said. (kmb15)

Tabanan (Bali Post)—Tofu and soybean cake makers in

Tabanan are distraught. Since few days, the price of soybean has soared. As a result, they suffered a great loss. Even, some of them went out of busi-ness and preferred to close. The recent price hike of soybean was considered more severe than last year’s.

Soybean price rose sharply from IDR 6,600 to IDR 8,200 per kilo-gram. This price was predicted to persistently skyrocket until reaching IDR 9,000 per kilogram. “All the tofu makers are screaming. Soybean price is really aggravating,” said Supriyadi, 40, a tofu maker from Jadi hamlet, Banjar Anyar village, Kediri, on Tuesday (Jul 24).

This man explained that soybean price had skyrocketed since the past two months. However, the sharpest rise had happened since three days ago. More apprehensively, the price increased virtually every day. Due to persistent loss, the tofu makers were forced to close and discontinued their activity whereas the demand for tofu and soybean cake kept on flowing. “Rather than losing out, a few tofu makers preferred to close,” he explained. Those deciding to close their business belonged to small-scale entrepreneur with minimal capital. They were unable to cover the soaring cost of production.

Added, the soybean whose price in-creased was imported from the United States. Last year, the maximum price

was only IDR 7,000 per kilogram. Ac-cording to Supriyadi, due to soaring price, he lost out as much as IDR 10 million per month because the price hike was not comparable to the pro-duction costs incurred. Moreover, the price of tofu and soybean cake could not be raised. “If the price is raised, customers will surely protest and leave us. We are totally distraught,” he sighed.

Supriyadi had cut down the size of his tofu to reduce the production costs. However, it reaped criticism from consumers. Now, the price of tofu in the market had reached IDR 28,000 per box containing 280 pieces. Every day, Supriyadi took about 3 quintals of soybean as a raw material. Of this amount, he was capable of producing up to 72 boxes of tofu where every box contained about 280 pieces. Bi-zarrely, despite the soaring prices, the supply of imported soybeans was still stable. Even, it was abundant.

According to him, the price hike of soybean was not triggered by fasting season because the tofu commodity tended to be stable. This man hoped the price of soybean could return to normal. Otherwise, a dozen of tofu makers would certainly go out of business because the soaring cost did not only happen to soybean raw materials but also to the price of firewood. “Hopefully, the price of soybean could diminish immedi-ately,” added the man from Malang, East Java. Without having to go there, you’ll be able to watch mature bears compete for salmon at Brook Falls and other sites and cubs tumbling over each other as they play. Starting Tuesday, a live Web stream (http://is.gd/bfPAs8 ) will allow the public to see the brown bears in their natural habitat.

“I think it’s an unparalleled oppor-tunity for people to get that front row seat of the lives of the bears at Brooks Camp,” said Roy Wood, chief of inter-pretation for Katmai National Park and Preserve. The project is a partnership with explore.org, which set up four high-definition cameras in Katmai, spokesman Jason Damata told The Associated Press. Three of them are at existing viewing stands where bear fans come to watch the animals.

The cameras provide access to a national park that is difficult to reach and expensive for most tourists. It is about 275 miles southwest of Anchor-age, but no roads lead to Katmai. A trip there involves multiple airplanes and a lot of advanced planning: it’s hard to get a lodge reservation at Brooks Camp before 2014. Camping is al-lowed, but on a reservation system that goes online Jan. 5.

“It takes a lot of time, a lot of effort

and a lot of money, and the webcams will make it accessible to anyone with access to a computer, a smartphone, a tablet device,” Wood said.

The park draws just under 10,000 visitors a year, but about 2,200 bears live in Katmai National Park. About 100 of them are in the Brooks Camp area.

One camera is at Brooks Falls, where the bigger male bears compete for salmon, some while the fish are trying to jump the falls. The bears eat mostly the brains and eggs of these fish and let the carcasses flow downstream. This is the prime view-ing area now.

The second camera is about 150 yards away, where females and cubs eat the fish scraps floating down-stream. The third is at the lower falls, where bears will congregate later this summer when dead salmon float downstream after spawning. “Any bear can catch them when they’re dead,” Wood said.

The fourth is on Dumpling Moun-tain and provides an aerial view of the entire ecosystem, including Brooks Lake, Naknek Lake, Brooks River and falls, and in the distance the Val-ley of 10,000 Smokes, Damata said.

WASHINGTON — Nearly all of Greenland’s massive ice sheet suddenly started melting a bit this month, a freak event that surprised scientists. Even Greenland’s coldest and highest place, Summit station, showed melting. Ice core records show that last happened in 1889 and occurs about once every 150 years.

Three satellites show what NASA calls unprecedented melting of the ice sheet that blankets the island, starting on July 8 and lasting four days. Most of the thick ice remains. While some ice usually melts during the summer, what was unusual was that the melting happened in a flash and over a widespread area.

“You literally had this wave of warm air wash over the Greenland ice sheet and melt it,” NASA ice scientist Tom Wagner said Tuesday.

The ice melt area went from 40 percent of the ice sheet to 97 percent in four days, according to NASA. Until now, the most extensive melt seen by satellites in the past three decades was about 55 percent. Wagner said researchers don’t know how much of Greenland’s ice melted, but it seems to be freezing again.

“When we see melt in places that we haven’t seen before, at least in a long period of time, it makes you sit up and ask what’s happening?” NASA chief scientist Waleed Abdalati said. It’s a big signal, the meaning of which we’re going to sort out for years to come.”

About the same time, a giant iceberg broke off from the Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland. And the National Snow and Ice Data Center on Tuesday announced that the area filled with Arctic sea ice continues near a record low. Wagner and other scientists said because this Greenland-wide melting has happened before they can’t yet determine if this is a natural rare event or one triggered by man-made global warming. But they do know that the edges of Greenland’s ice sheets have already been thinning because of climate change.

The only person believed to have been cured of HIV infection through a bone marrow transplant said Tuesday he feels wonderful and is launching a new foundation to boost research toward a cure. Timothy Ray Brown, 47, an American from Seattle, Washington, rose to fame as the so-called “Berlin patient” after doctors tried a novel technique to use an HIV-resistant donor for a stem cell transplant to treat Brown’s leukemia.

Since 2007, he has had two high-risk bone marrow transplants and continues to test negative for HIV, stunning researchers and offering new pathways for research into how gene therapy may lead to a more widely acceptable approach. “I am living proof that there could be a cure for AIDS,” Brown told AFP in an interview. “It’s very wonderful, being cured of HIV.”

Brown looked frail as he spoke to reporters in Washington where the 19th International AIDS Confer-ence, the world’s largest meeting of scientific experts, policymakers and advocates is taking place. The bone marrow transplant he received carried significant risks and may be fatal to one in five patients who undergo it. But he said his only complaint these days is the occa-sional headache.

He also said he was aware that his condition has generated some controversy, but disputed the claims of some scientists who believe he may still have traces of HIV in his

body and may remain infectious to others. “Yes, I am cured,” he said. “I am HIV negative.”

Brown said he fully supports more aggressive efforts toward finding a universal cure, and has met with a number of top scientists in recent days who have treated him “like a rock star.” He said he hopes to harness some of that fame to encourage donors to fund more research, and noted that Europe and China spend far more on cure research than the United States.

“There are thousands of very able researchers who cannot get funded for research, so I want to change that. And there are a lot of

researchers who are willing to work to find a cure for HIV.” Brown was a student in Berlin, Germany, when he tested positive for HIV in 1995 and was told he probably had about two years to live.

But combination antiretroviral therapy emerged on the global market a year later, and eventually transformed HIV from a death sen-tence into a manageable condition for millions of people worldwide.

Brown tolerated the medications well but due to persistent fatigue he visited a doctor in 2006 and was diag-nosed with leukemia. He underwent chemotherapy, which led to pneumo-nia and sepsis, nearly killing him.

DENPASAR - The number of Chinese holiday mak-ers in Bali has increased fast rising 53.29 percent on-year to 163,103 in the first half of the year.

The Chinese made up around 12 percent of the total number of foreign visitors to the island or second only the Australian visitors that reached 379,370 in the six months period.

Malaysians were the third with 82,996 visitors, ac-cording to official record.

The increase in the number of Chinese tourist spend-ing time in Bali followed growing number of Chinese leaders visiting the country especially Bali, says Dewa Nyoman Putra,a tourism observer.

This year, the number of Chinese visitors to Bali is the highest in growth, Dewa said here on Wednesday.

Dewa attributed the increase also to more intensive promotion of the Bali’s natural beasuty abroad includ-ing China.

Head of the Inspection and Investigation of BBPOM, I Gusti Adhi Ary-apatni, said that s u r v e i l l a n c e against the fast-ing appetizers at this time used

roving vehicle targeted to reach a few centers such as the Javanese Kampong for 12 samples, 4 samples at Sudirman, 9 samples at Pemogan and the Badung Market.

“Of the 41 samples examined at location by means of mobile labo-ratory, it was found that around 7 samples were positively not eligible and 34 samples were eligible,” said Adhi Aryapatni.

According to her, seven samples of the food positively contained rhodamine B. They consisted of 1 sample of sweet compote made of sago and sold in the area of Java-nese Kampong and 2 samples at Pemogan. The remaining samples were found in the Badung Market, namely 2 samples on Balinese abug cake, 1 sample on Balinese milling cake, and another sample on sesame seed balls.

“We examined totally 66 food products, consisting of 41 samples tested directly in the mobile labo-ratory and 25 samples were tested in the laboratory of BBPOM for microbiological test,” she said.

She said there was an increase in the findings of rhodamine B usage in the fasting appetizers in 2012. Meanwhile, the BBPOM only found two positive samples using rhodamine B in 51 samples during the fasting month in 2011. To that end, consumers were expected to be increasingly savvy and avoid purchasing colored food.

“We cannot say whether the usage of rhodamine B in 2012 is in-creasing. However, based on sam-pling test, it was found in greater amount,” she said. Mentioned, there was no ban for the usage of food coloring agent, provided that it was not rhodamine B. On that account, it was expected the cot-tage industry would no longer use hazardous food additives.

Rhodamine B is one of the synthetic dyes used in textile and paper industries. It is a chemical substance used as a basic dye in textiles and paper. At first, the substance was used for histology and currently it is used for vari-ous purposes related to its nature that can result in fluorescent effect under sunlight.

When foods contain rhod-amine B, they will look bright and attractive due to its color, taste slightly bitter (especially in syrup or lemonade), cause itchy in the throat after eating and do not exude natural smell pursuant to the food. (kmb27)

The Nobel Peace Prize winner won her first seat in the legislature in landmark April by-elections, marking a dramatic transformation from a longtime political prisoner to a key political figure in the budding reform process.

The veteran activist used her first speech to lawmakers to sup-port a motion by a ruling-party lawmaker on upholding ethnic

minority rights.“To become a truly democratic

union with a spirit of the union, equal rights and mutual respect, I urge all members of parliament to discuss the enactment of the laws needed to protect equal rights of ethnicities,” she said.

Protecting ethnic rights required more than just maintaining ethnic languages and culture, she added,

noting that ethnic minority groups suffer above-average poverty rates.

“Furthermore, the flames of war are not completely extinguished,” she said.

The 67-year-old’s entry into mainstream politics is one of the most visible signs of change under a new reformist government which took power last year under Presi-dent Thein Sein, a former general.

Thein Sein has overseen a series of dramatic reforms, including the release of hundreds of political prisoners, currency market liber-alisation and ceasefire deals with several armed rebel groups.

A Philippine court on Wednesday granted ex-president Gloria Arroyo bail, saying the charge of vote fraud for which she has been detained for eight months is weak.

The Pasay City regional trial court, which is hearing the case, said Arroyo could be released from the military hospital where she is being detained as soon as she posted bail of one million pesos ($23,800).

“The court believes that the prosecution failed to establish with the required quantum of proof, that conspiracy exists on the part of accused Arroyo,” said the court’s bail order, which was released to the media.

“Accordingly, accused Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is allowed to post bail for her provisional liberty in the amount of one million pesos.”

However the court said she could not leave the country.Arroyo, 65, was arrested at an exclusive hospital shortly after im-

migration authorities blocked her at Manila airport while trying to leave the country in November.

Arroyo was charged with “electoral sabotage”, a crime punishable with life in jail, for allegedly conspiring with a feared political warlord to rig the 2007 senatorial elections.

Her successor, Benigno Aquino, had vowed to have her brought to justice for many acts of corruption he alleged she committed during her nine years in office that ended in 2010.

Arroyo has also been charged with corruption for approving an allegedly graft-tainted contract to set up a national government broadband system as well as siphoning off $8 million in state lottery funds.

One of Arroyo’s lawyers, Ferdinand Topacio, told AFP that courts where these other two cases were being heard had not issued any order that she be detained.

Plans to evict people from slums precariously situated on the vertigi-nous slopes around the Haitian capital are sparking protests from many who want to stay despite the dangers. Port-au-Prince acts as a magnet in this des-perately poor Caribbean nation, which was struck by a catastrophic 2010 earthquake that killed an estimated 225,000 people and displaced 1.5 mil-lion, one in six of the population.

Haitians flock to the capital from badly deforested and degraded rural areas in the hope of finding work to support their families.

But 80 percent of people in the capital live below the poverty line,

many in squalid tent cities or in rickety housing near the edge of deadly ravines. Some shantytowns are built on flood plains that risk be-ing washed away when rainstorms come. Many camps lack basic sani-tation, leaving them more prone to infectious diseases like the cholera epidemic that has claimed more than 7,500 lives since sweeping the country in the wake of the quake.

For all these reasons, there have long been moves afoot to relocate slum dwellers to safer housing. When the quake hit and the inter-national community turned its at-tention to Haiti’s woes, those calls became a clamor.

But many slum dwellers don’t

want to leave. A lot of the housing alternatives being offered are outside the capital, which would mean less opportunity to find work. “I was born here,” 62-year-old William Jean told AFP as he sat on a bench facing his small dwelling in the optimisti-cally named “Jalousie” or “Jealousy” neighborhood. “At the beginning, there were just a few houses.”

In tents or makeshift abodes made out of sheeting, families eke out a miserable existence in the camps. When the flood waters pour in, mothers try to sleep standing up, cradling their babies. “It’s a delicate matter,” Environment Minister Ronald St-Cyr told AFP, adding “something has to be done.”

To diminish the helmet theft case as well as re-arrange the parking service in Sanglah Hospital, the parking of motorcycle has been focused in front of the Kamadhuk Cooperative since Monday (Jul 23). Meanwhile, the parking lot in front of the Emergency Room formerly used for motorcycles is now con-verted for car park.

Chief Security of Sanglah Hos-pital, Fery Dwiyanto, when met on Tuesday (Jul 24) said the motorcycle parking concentrated at a single location was to ease the monitoring of motorcycle. He expected such measure could reduce the theft case. “At the same time, it is also an effort of re-arrangement so that it will look more orderly,” said Fery.

He continued that such re-ar-rangement was made in coopera-tion with PD Parkir Denpasar and denoted a test period in the matter of providing more spacious parking lot, especially for car parking.

As field monitoring of Bali Post on Tuesday (Jul 24), though it was re-organized and the car parking lot got additional space, the condition

of incoming and outgoing vehicles remained to face a slowdown and congestion. Some incoming cars still had to turn in order to get a parking space. Even, the mo-torcycle parking area beside the Kamadhuk Pharmacy that would be used for car parking was still filled with motorcycles due to high volume of motorcycle coming into Sanglah every day.

According to Fery, the re-ar-rangement was still in tryout and requiring an adjustment period. The motorcycles that could not be accommodated at proper location were caused by the employees of Sanglah Hospital that also parked at the front parking lot. “For em-ployees, we have provided space at the rear parking lot. But, some of them are still parking in front. It is also caused by the project taking the parking lot of the employees. Hopefully, after completion of the project, the employees can park theirs at proper space,” said Fery.

The arrangement was not only intended to set the parking lot of car and motorcycle but also to repair the

entrance gates and make a special lane for supplier car to Kamadhuk Cooperative. According to Ferry, so far the supplier car passed through the same lane as that of other cars so that it triggered a slowing down to the incoming and outgoing cars.

Crowdedness as well as slow incoming and outgoing flow in Sanglah Hospital, added Fery, was caused by a large number of

vehicles and long time parking of a number of users. Even, some users parked their vehicles in Sanglah Hospital for days. “In the future, the parking ticket in Sanglah Hospital will be charged on hourly basis. It’s not for profit, but with the hourly basis charge the incoming and outgoing flow is expected to run faster,” said Fery.

If the number of motorcycle

continued to increase and they were not accommodated, the Sanglah Hospital would plan a multi-tiered parking lot for motorcycles.

Aside from concentrating the parking lot for motorcycle in mini-mizing the case of helmet theft, the Sanglah Hospital has also provided a helmet deposit counter located next to the Kamadhuk Coopera-tive. (san)

The condition of good school building don’t seem to be given to a lot of pu-pils as seen at elementary school SDN Sampalan Tengah, Dawan, Klungkung, which located nearby the village’s Pura Dalem (temple of death) and cemetery. This year the number of pupils applying to the school is only two children when actually the school led by Principal Nengah Sujani managed to get 16 new pu-pils last year. It is not known what have caused it as the facilities are still good. “Previous years we managed to get dozens of pupils yet this year only two and I don’t know what have caused it,” Sujani stated.

Even so Sujani accompanied by Sixth Grade teacher Nengah Suardana pre-dicted that the school did not get new pupils due to its location and also there are five schools around the area with there at Paksebali and two at Sampalan. For the two pupils Sujana will coordinate with the nearest school, SDN 2 Paksebali, principal if the pupils will move there or not because until now the parents of the two pupils haven’t given any confirmation on either their kid will go there or not. It is admitted that the UPT of Dawan Education Agency representative have come to check the school but there hasn’t been any solution given. “We are only waiting for the representative to give solution, we will also report to the Agency this Tuesday,” Sujani explained.

Now there are around 59 pupils with each class containing dozens of pupils and eight teachers including principal who are civil workers. Two other teach-ers are volunteers as administration and contracted worker. From what’s seen on the field, the teaching process that was predicted to have started since 1976 keep on going only just every room has its chairs empty. Head of Klungkung Education, Youth and Sports Agency, Ni Wayan Ringin, was not in office so Secretary of Agency, Gusti Ketut Kaler, when contacted admitted to continue checking. “If there’s a report already then I will check. At this time I can’t give any answers and this problem will be forwarded to the Head so the studying process will keep on going,” Gusti Kaler stated. (119)

BEIJING - China’s economy will rebound in the second half of 2012 to expand eight percent annually as government policies to spur growth take effect, the International Mon-etary Fund said Wednesday.

“Growth is expected to bottom out in the second quarter, and then accelerate in the second half of the year,” the IMF said in an annual report on China’s economy, which it also predicted would grow 8.5 percent in 2013. The Fund noted that Chinese authorities, whose views are included in the report, said they had been pursuing policies to achieve a more sustainable pace of growth.

“This managed slowdown, how-ever, has run into stronger-than-anticipated headwinds from the worsening of the euro area crisis,” the IMF said.

“Measures to support growth are now being given more prominence and the authorities are confident that

growth will be at least 7.5 percent this year.”

Still, an expansion of eight per-cent would mark a further decelera-tion for China, a key engine of global growth. The economy, the world’s second biggest, grew 9.2 percent in 2011 and 10.4 percent in 2010.

Authorities, worried the economy was overheating, from 2010 tried to rein in growth by raising borrowing costs and suppressing bank lending, among other steps.

But the slowdown has prompted them to start unwinding some of those measures, including cutting interest rates and loosening require-ments for the amount of reserves banks must maintain, in order to spur lending and boost activity.

The IMF also said that the gov-ernment has room to do more.

“The authorities have taken the foot off the brakes, but they have not yet stepped on the accelerator,” Markus Rodlauer, the head of the IMF’s China team, said in a confer-

ence call to discuss the report.“But they are ready to do so and

they have room to do so if needed,” he said.

Chinese leaders have repeat-edly expressed concern over the weakening economy and vowed to take further measures.Premier Wen Jiabao has called stabilising growth the government’s top priority.

Growth slowed to a more than three-year low of 7.6 percent in the second quarter, marking the sixth straight three-month period in which it had slowed.

The Washington-based IMF said the projection of eight percent growth was based on the premise that China maintains policies aimed at such a result. The IMF’s assess-ment echos many private econo-mists, who also see the economy rebounding in the second half.

The Fund cited the ongoing eu-rozone sovereign debt crisis as the biggest external risk facing China’s economy.

Ravi Menon, managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, said any sharp deterioration in the eurozone, the city-state’s biggest export market, could hurt economic growth and lead to a drying up of bank credit.

“The key risk facing the Singapore economy and financial system is the ongoing crisis in the eurozone,” Menon said at a news conference.

“While eurozone governments have taken important steps to deal with the crisis, we must be prepared for a more adverse turn of events.”

Turmoil in the eurozone continued to cast a shadow across global financial mar-kets Wednesday after Spanish borrowing prices hit a new historic high amid fears that Madrid will soon need a full-blown bailout.

Singapore could see a drying up of bank credit similar to the aftermath of the collapse of US bank Lehman Brothers in 2008 that hammered global markets, Menon said.

“Already, we have seen some retraction in eurozone banks’ trade finance activities in Asia, but local and global banks have stepped in to fill the void,” he said.

Singapore, an international financial

centre, should brace for “excessive inflows as well as outflows” of capital, which could impact on the Singapore dollar, he added.

Financial institutions operating in Singapore have “limited direct exposure to peripheral Europe”, Menon said but warned that “if the crisis spreads to core Europe, contagion could be larger”.

“Our financial system is sound and we should be able to weather the storm,” he added.

Singapore’s economy is on track to expand between 1.0 and 3.0 percent this year, down from 4.9 percent growth last year, he said.

However, economic growth could dip below 1.0 percent if the situation in the eurozone escalates, China’s economy slows down drastically and the United States falls into a recession, he added.

Singapore’s trade-driven economy, re-garded as a bellwether for Asia, contracted by 1.1 percent in the second quarter from the previous three-months due to a slow-down in global demand, the government said earlier this month.

Menon said average growth in the second half is likely to be slower than the first half.

DENPASAR - Bali province enjoyed an increase of 19.89 percent in visa on arrival (VoA) from foreign tourists during the first quarter of 2012, and its tourism revenue reached US$14.4 million, from US$14.3 million during the same period last year.

Senior Researcher from Cen-tral Bank of Indonesia Region III Sunarto said the revenue increased because of the higher number of foreign tourists visit-ing Bali.

According to statistical data on the financial report of Bali province, the revenue from foreign tourists who came to Bali was excellent in light of the current situation of the global economy.

“The rise in revenue in the tourism sector is mainly because of the foreigners who pay for VoA,” Sunarto said, adding that not all foreign tourists paid

for such visa when coming to Bali.

As reported by the Bali Tour-ism department, 695,610 foreign tourists came to Bali during the January-March period.

Tourists can enter Bali through three main gates - Padangbai Harbour, Tanjong Benoa Harbour and Ngurah Rai International Airport - but most of them arrived this year via Ngurah Rai Airport.

The revenue from foreign tourists has boosted the econ-omy of the local community, which still relies largely on tourism, micro-industries and agriculture.

Many tourists from foreign countries spend more than a week in Bali. The longer they stay, the more they pay for VoA.

Tourism is one of the main pillars of Bali`s economy. The island resort`s economic growth during the first quarter of 2012 was recorded at 6.09 percent.

DENPASAR - Foreign students are being introduced to the Balinese arts and culture, as part of an Indonesian Foreign Af-fairs Department programme aimed at promoting the diversity of the nation’s culture.

“Fifty-four foreign college students, placed across the country, were exposed to the local culture of Indonesia over a period of three months,” Balinese cultural instructor Dewa Nurjana said in Denpasar on Tuesday.

Ten of them were in Bali and the rest were in Yogyakarta, Solo, Bandung, Makassar, and Papua.

“Indonesia has many provinces, which have their own unique culture. Therefore, the foreign students would have an all-round perspective on the country,” Nurjana explained.

The 10 students in Dewata Island, Bali, had come from Spain, Serbia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Germany, Turkey, and Poland in order to learn about the Balinese way of life.

MONTh by month has gone by and another year is coming. Time is so significant to humans when he performs action and writes down his story of life. When having arrived at certain point, he may need a short break for an introspection and com-memoration of a beautiful moment in his lifetime. Yes, it’s commonly known as birthday, an annual cel-ebration of the day on which one was born.

Etymologically, there may have been a common ‘misperception’ here where birthday in the Gregorian calendar should be celebrated on the same day as the word suggests and not the same date (should be birth date). On the contrary, otonan in the Balinese (Hindu) tradition is similar thing but of different context. This one is celebrated every 210 days on the same day based on Javano-Balinese wuku year. So, it can be said a real birthday. For example, if one was born on Wednesday (day) Kliwon (five-day week) Dungulan (one of thirty wukus), he will cel-ebrate his otonan on the same day as above.

Another difference between the two is the dating system, particularly on the starting point of new date. If the Gregorian starts at 00:01, the

wuku at the sunrise. Sometimes, there is also misunderstanding among some Balinese to determine the day of a baby that was born at dawn, let’s say on Wednesday Kliwon Dungulan at 04:00.

Based on Gregorian calendar, the day and date have belonged to the next (Thursday) and will become its ‘birth date’ later. However, its oto-nan should not follow this calendar system, but as the baby was born at 04:00, it should belong to Wednesday (Buda) based on the wuku system.

This misdating may often inflict mistakes in determining his otonan day and its character does not accord with the Hindu astrology. This then needs something like ritual adjust-ment in Hindu belief to the appropri-ate day through an exorcism rite as mentioned in palm-leaf manuscript that commonly used as reference like Wrehaspati Kalpa.

Otonan in Balinese tradition is actually a private and comprehensive ritual that only celebrated by the family internally. By certain kinds of oblation, the ritual is intended for one’s inner and outer self along with his kanda empat or four companions that are believed to accompany him since birth to the end of lifetime and even the period after death.

They are expressed in personifica-tion as amniotic fluid, vernix cascosa, the afterbirth and the blood. In Hindu belief, the names of the four compan-ions will change in keeping with the increasing age of the human self and so are the places where they indwell. The four will loyally keep the self in this world. If ‘spiritual’ commu-nication and empowerment run well among the five, one will never feel fearful wherever he goes and can do healing. As loyal and eternal com-panions, too, they will accompany the self around the clock. By doing this, they will know every single deed of the self during its interaction with corporeal body. After death, on facing the court of Yama, no facts can be hidden or no lies can be told, as the four companions will deliver the true witness.

In essence, otonan is an immensely important celebration for the Hindus. It constitutes right moment to reorga-nize, encourage the relationship of human self with the four integrated companions as the otonan contains two dimensional aspects, both sekala (visible) and niskala (invisible). By this, it is also expected to promote harmony between the body with soul and finally reach eternal bliss here and after. (BTN/Doc)

At least 170,000 villagers have fled their homes in Assam state to seek shelter in relief camps, gov-ernment buildings and schools to escape the unrest, which has raged since Friday with dozens of homes burnt down.

Nine people were killed in overnight clashes raging between indigenous Bodo tribes and Muslim settlers who have fought for years over long-standing territorial dis-putes in the remote region.

“The situation is tense and we are getting additional paramilitary troopers,” Assam police chief J.N. Choudhury told reporters, adding that the bodies of those nine people had been found on Wednesday morning.

News channels broadcast pic-tures of homes that had been set ablaze by rioters, and of women and children gathered in the gov-ernment-run camps where food is handed out and soldiers are on duty to provide protection.

Northeast India, which is linked to the rest of the country by a

narrow land bridge, has seen de-cades of friction among ethnic and separatist groups, though some of the biggest rebel movements have recently started peace talks with the government.

Hagrama Mohilary, chief of the Bodoland Territorial Council, a lo-cal government body, told AFP by telephone that “35 people have been killed and an estimated 170,000 are sheltered in relief camps”.

Mohilary said that the latest victims had been killed with crude weapons such as heavy sticks, and their bodies left at separate sites in rice fields and along roadsides.

“Incidents of arson and violence were reported from several places,” he said.

Police issued shoot-on-sight orders late on Monday after rioters burnt shops and houses and at-tacked rival gangs. The orders mean that mobs breaking curfew orders can be shot without warning.

Four rioters attempting to burn down properties were shot by security forces on Tuesday, police

said.“We have lost everything in the

violence. Our houses have all been razed to ground with mobs setting ablaze our properties,” Rabiul Is-lam, a villager in Kokrajhar district, told local television at one camp.

“We don’t know how long we have to stay in the relief camp. We left everything behind and simply ran for our lives,” said Ronila Brah-ma, a mother of two children.

The Press Trust of India news agency reported that the fighting started when two Muslim student leaders were shot and seriously injured in Kokrajhar, leading to revenge strikes on Bodo groups.

A team of senior Indian home ministry officials have arrived in Assam to oversee the security plan.

“We are trying our best to bring the situation under control and ap-peal for peace and restraint,” Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called for the violence to be controlled.

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s government has told the Supreme Court it will not reopen an old corruption case against the president, defying a judicial order that led to the ouster of the country’s prime minister.

Attorney General Irfan Qadir said in a court session Wednesday that the new premier, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, also refused to write a letter to Swiss authorities asking them to reopen the graft case because President Asif Ali Zardari enjoys immunity from prosecution while in office.

The lead judge, Asif Saeed Khosa, demanded Ashraf write the letter. But he also seemed to soften the court’s stance, saying the judges would respect the president’s immunity if the government wrote the letter.

It’s unclear whether the judge’s comments will alter the govern-ment’s stance. The next hearing is scheduled for Aug. 8.

Police have charged Prime Minister David Cameron’s ex-media chief Andy Coulson with phone hacking as a long-running press scandal lapped at the door of Downing Street.

Former tabloid editor Rebekah Brooks will also be charged at a later date, police confirmed.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said eight current or former em-ployees of Rupert Murdoch’s now defunct News of the World would answer hacking charges, which carry a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

In total, police issued 19 separate charges of conspiring to illegally inter-cept the voicemails of some 600 people, including Hollywood stars Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jude Law as well as politicians and crime victims.

Prosecutors said the other people targeted included Wayne Rooney and Paul McCartney.

“I have concluded that a prosecution is required in the public interest in relation to each of these eight suspects,” senior prosecutor Alison Levitt said in a live televised announcement.

The others charged include Stuart Kuttner, the News of the World’s former managing editor, former news editor Greg Miskiw, former head of news Ian Edmondson, former chief reporter Neville Thurlbeck, and reporter James Weatherup.

The last person is private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, who was jailed for phone hacking for six months in 2007. All eight will appear in court in London on August 16, according to the CPS.

Australian-born media tycoon Murdoch, 81, was forced to close the weekly News of the World a year ago amid a storm of revelations that its staff hacked into the voicemail messages of a murdered schoolgirl and a slew of public figures.

Coulson, 44, edited the News of the World from 2003 to 2007 and went on to become Cameron’s spokesman, but resigned from that post in January 2011 after he was questioned over the scandal. He was arrested last year.

“I will fight these allegations when they eventually get to court,” Coulson told reporters outside his house.

AntaraJAKARTA - Former central bank senior deputy governor Miranda

Goeltom will be sentenced to up to five years of imprisonment if con-victed in the bribery case linked to her nomination as a central bank official in 2004.

The prosecution, at the opening of her trial here on Tuesday, said: “Miranda has given travel cheques worth Rp20.85 billion, issued by Bank Internasional Indonesia, as part of a total of 480 travel cheques worth Rp24 billion to state apparatus, namely Hamka Yamdhu, Dudhi Makmun Murod, Endin AJ Soefihara and Udju Djuhaeri, in connec-tion with her election for the post of Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor.”

Therefore, Miranda has been accused of violating the corruption law and faces a maximum sentence of five years in jail.

“The defendant is considered to have abused her power by giving an opportunity to Nunung Nurbaeti to extend the gifts in the form travel cheques,” the prosecution said.

Nunun Nurbaeti, the wife of a former national police deputy chief, was sentenced to 2.5 years in jail in May after being convicted of the same charges that Miranda is facing now.

Both Miranda and Nunun Nurbaeti were accused of bribing the House of Representatives Commission IX members to ensure Miranda`s election victory in June 2004.

West Jakarta branch of Kopti spokesman Su-harto said here on Tuesday that the stopping of production of tofu and tempeh was a form of

protest against the government`s ne-glecting the fate of Kopti and the 35 percent hike in soybean prices.

“We have taken various steps to convey our aspirations, even staging a protest rally at the State Palace, but with zero results as soybean prices continued to increase by 35 percent in 2012,” Suharto said.

He noted that tofu and tempeh producers had also protested by mak-ing the tempeh, or fermented soybean cake, thinner than the usual size.

“Another step we may take is to either raise the prices of tofu and tem-peh, or to stop production completely,” Suharto warned.

He added that stopping produc-tion would probably be followed by tofu and tempeh producers in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek), and if needed, in 18 provinces in Indonesia.

Suharto said there were 4,824 members of tofu and tempeh produc-ers in Jakarta who need 10,060 tons of soybean per month, and at a national level there were 83,545 members who needed 132,350 tons per month.

No plan to subsidizeThe government still sees no

urgency in subsidizing soybean despite its spiraling price in recent weeks, Deputy Agriculture Minis-ter Rusman Heriawan said here on Tuesday.

He recalled the government subsi-dized Rp1,000 to every kg of soybean four years ago when the price of the commodity increased but the subsidy gave no impact whatsoever.

“Subsidy is not a good discourse we have to pursue because it will only give a short term impact. In fact, farm-ers did not benefit from the subsidy four years ago,” he said.

He said the recent soybean price hike was the result of drought in the US, the world`s largest soybean sup-plier. Because of limited supplies, global soybean price had risen over the past few weeks.

The soybean price would fall if the US soybean production returned to

normal, he said.Right now Indonesia depended

70 percent of its soybean needs on imports, while the remaining 30 percent came from local production, he said.

The former chief of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said soybean growers got nothing when the soybean price was on the increase. However, when the harvest time came soybean price fell again.

Therefore, now was the right mo-mentum to start increasing soybean production, he said.

“Don`t miss this momentum,” he said.

Responding to soybean cake and tofu producers` threat to stop produc-tion if the soybean price continued to soar, he said they`d better drop their plan.

The threat, if realized, could disrupt the supply of soybean cake and tofu to the public, he said.

Yet he did not want to see soybean cake and tofu producers suffering further losses because of the soybean price hike.

He asked buyers to pay more for soybean cake and tofu to compensate for the soybean price hike.

AntaraJAKARTA - The government has issued a ministerial decree on the use

of batikmark logo for Indonesian batik.“The preservation of batik should be carried out by every party. The

government has done various efforts by providing legal protection, quality guarantee, and identity for Indonesian batik. The government has registered Indonesia`s Batikmark logo,” Industry Minister MS Hidayat said in a batik exhibition here Tuesday.

Many Indonesians have earned their living by engaging in batik busi-nesses. Although batik is mostly produced by small-scale entrepreneurs, the batik businesses have potential, a strategic role and a special place to help develop the national economy which is growing currently.

“We must be proud that the international response toward Indonesia`s batik is very positive and it has been recognized by Unesco as an intangible cultural heritage since 209,” the minister said.

However, the minister is concerned about the human resources and re-generation of hand-made batik producers.

In order to preserve batik, the government urges the younger generation to be actively involved in the hand-made batik production.

“Today was one of those games that as a team, as a unit, we really tried to lock in from the start,” Anthony said. “I think we came out a little bit too focused, a little bit overzealous at the beginning and they jumped on us quick. “They came out with a lot of intensity and got some easy shots, easy baskets. Once we settled down and made a couple plays defensively, got back to our comfort zone, we didn’t look back from there.”

Anthony came off the bench to score 23 of his 27 points in the first half, and the Americans beat Spain 100-78 Tuesday night in a rematch of the 2008 Olympic gold-medal game — and a possible preview of the next one. James added 25 and Kevin Durant had 13, including 10 in the first 3½ minutes of the third quarter to help the U.S. break open the teams’ final exhibition game

before heading to London.“We knew that this was a big

game,” U.S. guard Chris Paul said. “When Coach K talked to us, he told us this was probably the biggest game here in Barcelona since the ‘92 team was here, so we approached it like that and it was a good win for us.” The teams played a memorable gold-medal game four years ago, the Americans pulling away for a 118-107 victory after leading by only four points with less than 2½ minutes left.

This one turned out much easier once the U.S. controlled the final three quarters. “It was a good test for us tonight, but the exhibition games are over, the friendlies are over and we look forward to the real challenge of going to London,” James said. Pau Gasol scored 19 points and Oklahoma City forward Serge Ibaka, a native of the Republic of Congo who became a

Spanish national last year, had 16.Both teams have been weakened

by injuries, with the U.S. missing Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh, all key contributors in Beijing, along with Derrick Rose. The Spaniards are without point guard Ricky Rubio, and All-Star center Marc Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro and Rudy Fernandez have battled injuries this year.

They’re still the best two teams in the world and favored to meet again in the Aug. 12 gold-medal game. Spain would have a different look, as Marc Gasol was held out of this one while recovering from a left shoulder injury and backup point guard Sergio Rodriguez also sat out. It may not matter if the Americans play like this in the games that count.

Spain’s players said Monday that while they would try to win this tuneup, the bigger priority was preparing for London. The Ameri-cans responded that the Spaniards, playing in front of their home fans, would be compelled to go all out in hopes of a victory. Spain seemed to be playing for real, but was simply overmatched and the Americans eventually ran away for the victory.

They may have won 21 Grand Slam singles titles between them, not counting their doubles successes together, but Venus and Serena Wil-liams insisted Tuesday the Olympic Games were still special.

Many observers have argued that sports like tennis, where win-ning Olympic gold is not the ultimate achievement compared say to a Wimbledon or US Open title, ought not to be in the Games.

However, the Williams sisters -- the defending Olympic women’s doubles champions from Beijing, having also won gold together at the 2000 Sydney Games -- insisted there was nothing to compare to Olympic competition.

“I think growing up as tennis players we always dream of winning Grand Slams and doing well at tournaments like Wimbledon but to have the opportunity to win a gold medal and be mentioned among the greatest athletes is an honour,” said younger sister Serena.

“For me every tournament I’ve won, I enjoy my gold medal prob-ably the most.”

Venus, at 32, two years older than Serena, added: “When you’re at tournaments and announce your name if it has ‘Olympian’ and ‘gold medallist’ behind you it’s such a thrill and it’s not something you ever get over.

BARCELONA, Spain — There is no exhibition game gold medal. The only prize was some player of the game award LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony shared. Not counting doesn’t mean not mattering. BERNE - Salzburg were knocked out of the Champions League quali-fiers by Luxemburg’s Dudelange on Tuesday, continuing an astonishing run of failures in the competition since Red Bull took over the Austrian club. Last season’s double winners, who enjoy substantial financial back-ing from the energy drinks company, beat visitors Dudelange 4-3 in their second qualifying round, second leg tie but were eliminated on away goals after losing 1-0 last week.

Red Bull took over the club in 2005 with ambitious plans of mak-ing Salzburg Champions League regulars, only to see their team fail five times in a row in the qualifiers. The only time they have taken part in the group stage was as the old Austria Salzburg in 1994/95.

Their latest failure is a huge set-back for coach Roger Schmidt and sporting director Ralf Rangnick, the former Schalke 04 coach, who took over in the close season. Salzburg’s troubles in Tuesday’s match began when they lost possession in mid-field, allowing Thierry Steinmetz to break clear and score in the 26th minute. Jakob Jantscher and Mar-tin Hinteregger put Salzburg 2-1 ahead at halftime, only for Aurelien Joachim to level with his sixth goal in four matches in the qualifying tour-nament. Steinmetz struck again to make it 3-2 but Dudelange then had to endure a nerve-wracking finale after forward Sofian Benzouien was sent off in the 74th minute.

Salzburg’s Cristiano converted an 81st minute penalty and fellow substitute Gonzalo Zarate scored a minute later to put the hosts ahead on the night but the Austrians could not find the fifth goal they needed in the final eight minutes.

SHAKHTAR OUTThere was another surprise as

Shakhtar Donetsk, who have taken part in the group stage eight times, were knocked out by Czech champi-ons Slovan Liberec, who scored the decisive goal in the last minute of extra time.Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Shakhtar levelled the aggregate score with a Zhambyl Kukeyev penalty five minutes before half-time. Both sides had chances before substitute Jan Blazek scored in the 120th minute to make it 1-1 and send Liberec through 2-1 on aggregate.

Norwegian side Molde, coached by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, went through 4-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw at Latvian champions Ventspils and in the third qualifying round will face Swiss champions FC Basel, who last season eliminated his for-mer club Manchester United.

Two goals from Cameroon striker Jacques Zoua and one from Chilean midfielder Marcelo Diaz, Switzerland’s most expensive close season signing, gave Basel a 3-0 win over Estonia’s Flora Tallinn as they completed a 5-0 aggregate victory.

He joined Lens aged 14 and moved up to the senior squad last season, making 14 Ligue 1 appearances including his debut as a substitute in the first match of the campaign.

Thorgan has played for Belgium at several age groups and was part of the squad for the 2011 European Under-19 Championship.

Once U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski told the U.S. Olympic team that it was playing in probably the biggest basketball game here since the Dream Team ruled Barcelona, the Americans couldn’t help wanting to take it to Spain — even if it may have messed them up in the beginning.

Brooks, also 44, was editor of the tabloid from 2000 to 2003 and went on to edit The Sun before going on to become chief executive of News International, Murdoch’s British newspaper group.

(BTN/Doc)

(kmb27)

SINGARAJA - Although the discourse had ever disappeared, the plan of international airport con-struction in Buleleng is still going on. The Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, revealed the matter after inaugurated by Deputy Governor of Bali, Puspayoga, in the Buleleng Parliament Hall on Tuesday (Jul 24).

The Regent Agus Suradnyana said he still supported the development of

an international airport in Buleleng. He expressed his optimism if the airport would be realized. However, it would be no longer located in the West Buleleng as heralded during the reign of the Regent Bagiada. “As planned, the location will be in East Buleleng,” he said.

According to him, the construc-tion of international airport in Bule-leng was a strategic plan because the runaway of Ngurah Rai Airport was only one. So, he considered it very necessary to have additional

airport elsewhere in Bali, namely in Buleleng. Besides, he said that flight delays occurring so far mostly hap-pened due to lack of take-off slots at the airport. “To that end, it has been fixed that an international airport will be built in Buleleng,” he said.

On the other hand, the Regent Agus Suradnyana accompanied by Deputy Regent Nyoman Sutjidra explained that his party would real-ize all the programs both the ones delivered during the campaign and open house to the residents of Bule-

leng. Those programs would be real-ized into short-term and long-term program. Interestingly, in realizing the programs his party would not ask for consulting assistance. “Consul-tant will only work on the editorial preparation, while the idea would be self-designed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Regent Nyoman Sutjidra said his short-term program which had been promised during the campaign was to build a non-class hospital. As planned, this hospital would

be established in 2013 in West and East Buleleng. Additionally, the Buleleng Hospital belonging to type B would be worked on and up-graded into type A. On that account, the health service of the regional hospital for Buleleng community would be more optimal. “Together with Mr. Regent we have planned to meet the promise. Hopefully, we can build two non-class hospitals in 2013 and they will become the first hospital of its kind in Bali,” he explained. (kmb15)

The magnitude 6.4 quake hit about 7:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) and was centered 28 kilometers (17 miles) northwest of Aceh province’s Sinabang town at a depth of 45 kilometers (28 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho from the Na-tional Disaster Management Agency said a 70-year-old man who was suffering from hypertension died as he fled in panic and fell down, but there were no other casual-ties reported.

Twenty buildings were damaged, includ-ing mosques, public health centers, schools and local government offices, the agency said.

Suharjono, from Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency, said the earthquake had no potential to generate a tsunami. He said a quake that close to the coast would have to be more powerful to generate a gi-ant wave.

Residents of Sinabang on Simeulue island, off the west coast of Sumatra and close to the epicenter, said the quake struck as people were gathered for pre-dawn meals and prayers during the fasting month of Ramadan.
