Grandson (one ref calls him son, with a sister Chritiana) of Thomas Bowoke, he inherits after 1501 from William Bullok, was in possessions by 1505, but not entered as heir of g/f Thomas until 1523. He is entered as a Burgess in 1517, paying his dues with ‘nine score sacks of all kind of stanes for the common wall of the town’, presumably for the Flodden Wall. The 1507/8 Guildry tariff shows this as worth 6/8d or 13/4d, depending upon his status as 1st or 2nd son. Cameron, Thomas (jun).

Thomas was notary Public and Clerk of Glasgow diocese by apostilic and royal authority in 1505, servitor to Lord Sinclair (master of the King’s artillery) in 1511, when he gets £4/6/8 from the treasury for transporting guns from the Castle to Newhaven and back, by 1513 is ‘in’ the Powder Mill, is paid 40s for two pairs of wheels for ‘close carts’ in 1515 and by 1518 is on £20 p.a. as ‘Keeper of the King’s Artillery’. Dee, John.

Younger son & heir of burgess Sir Robert Dee (d. by 1501), ‘Tavernor’ John dies by 1518 and is succeeded in Cowgate lands by daughters Janet &



Katherine in 1526, whose procurators are Alexanders Dee, senior and junior. Alex sen. was John’s brother, also a younger son of Robert’s, whilst the other Alex was John’s son, who inherited his burgess place in 1518. Dickson, George. George was brother of M. Thomas Dikson, below, appears as a witness in 1496 and married Elizabeth Strathauchin (by 1508), doubtless kin of the family of notaries and lenders extant at the time. George makes numerous appearances as Baillie c. 1508 on, held other burghal lands and had royal custom for his exclusive drapery. Treasury accounts show him being paid c. £40 for 14 ½ ells of Tanne velvet supplied to Ales Hume, sister of Lard of Fastcastle in 1511, whilst the next year he is paid the enormous sum of £111 for 18 ½ ells of Crammesy velvet for a gown for the Queen and £4 17s 9d for 2 ½ ells and ½ a ¼ [ell] of English Scarlet to cover the Princis cradle. He died c. 1521 and was succeeded by son James in 1524, who in turn is succeeded by his younger brother Thomas in 1527. George’s daughters Elizabeth and Jonet receive their parts (as co-heirs of their late brother James) of another tenement in 1534. (Thomas inherits other Edinburgh lands too) Elizabeth was the eldest daughter, married firstly John Napier, from whom she inherited other lands after his death by 1528, and secondly (by 1529) burgess Alexander Preston or Bartoun. Younger sister Jonet married burgess George Cant. Barton and Cant both have Fife lands of possible marital origin. Dickson, Master Thomas. Thomas was at St Andrews from 1488-1493 and as well as being prebendary of Terray, which he recieves gratis from the King in 1511-12 (together with the kirklands, house and glebe, in free barony), he is also described as Chaplain in 1491 and 1496, witnessing Creichton and Cant sasines (including Strabrok lands – see below), minister of Trinitarian House of Houstone and Provincial of the Order 1502, Provost of Guthrie 1506-12, Dean of Restalrig 1510-13, Canon of Aberdeen 1511, Rector of Bute and has benefice of Leswaid in 1512.

He receives many payments from the treasury in 1511-13 for such diverse duties as – 40s for saying 60 masses in Dunfermline, 17s 6d to ‘by fische and uthir stuff to have up to the Kingis great schip in Quenis ferry’, £5 for five trigentalis said in St Andrews, £5 6s 8d for drawing up the charter involving himself and John Dishington of Ardross’s dealings over the lands of Tulliquandlane, which he held in wadset and fell to his two Dikson sisters, Janet and Elizabeth, 20 years later. He also receives £3 in part payment for ‘lining the Kingis gret parchment porteus’, £4 10s for ‘laying down to priests in Linlithgow’, 14s to do errand for the King and appears as co-payee with Archibald Earl of Angus, Robert Graham of Fintry, Henry Lovell of Ballumbie and William Carmichael. As well as his Cowgate lands he held property in Leith and knew how to work wadsets. He is believed to have been killed at Flodden in 1513 and is definitely described as deceased in 1521. Dickson, sir John, John Dykson was at St Andrews from 1510-12, was appointed rector of Pentland parish church in 1521, by John Hepburn, prior of St Andrews, at the presentation of Sir William Sinclair of Roslin, became Provost of Roslin by 1524,



Chaplain of Altar of St Katrine in St Giles c. 1530 and was possibly minister/exhorter at Peebles 1560-67. Dingwall, sir John. See separate biography below. Hamilton, Sir Patrick of Kincavill (near Linlithgow).

Grandson of James III, brother of the Earl of Arran and cousin of Sir James Hamilton of Finnart. Treasury accounts show him ‘schuting at the schort buttis and syne at the long buttis’ with the King, whilst in 1506, 34s is paid to John Hertseid, pailyoun man ‘to fetch pailyouns agane the fechting of the lord Hammylton and the Franch Knight, and for six carriage hors with thaim’. [Sir Pat won a jousting match against public challenger Sir John Coupance under the walls of the Castle on 26/11/1506, the King signalling Hamilton’s win by throwing his hat over the castle walls]. Patrick receives 16 ells ‘dames’ at 24s, presumably for clothing for the event.

He bought Cowgate lands 1512 from Thomas Williamson, nephew and heir of Sir John Lamb. Entered to the Guild on the 4th Octeber 1515, he becomes Provost of Edinburgh three weeks later.

He was slain in a skirmish called ‘cleanse the Causeway’ in the High St of Edinburgh in 1520, when he is succeeded by son & heir James. Another son, also Patrick, rose to fame on the scaffold at St Andrews in 1528, when he was tried for heresy by Beaton and others, then burnt at the stake as the first and most famous reformation martyr. Ker, Master Matthew. He graduated from Paris University in 1498, was vicar of Peterculter 1503, attended St Andrews from 1506-08, was Dean of Christianity and Commissary south of the Forth 1505 x 1511, Provost of Kirk of Field 1511-16, Commissary of Lothian 1516. Held other lands in Edinburgh, other than provost’s land. From his association with other members of the family, he is believed to be descended from the Kers of Yare (Yair); he was dead by 1520, and seemingly succeeded at St Mary’s by prebendary Sir Alexander Couper, another Paris graduate (law, 1500) and founding member of the College of Justice in 1532, alongside sir John Dingwall. Master Richard Bothwell is the next Provost, from 1525. Raperlaw. The family first appear as Edinburgh merchants in 1438, when David R and others from Edinburgh and Aberdeen are petitioning Henry VI for restitution for ‘Goods of their own and their maistres & friends, lately taken in two Flemish and Sprucian vessels on the high seas, during the truce’. The King gives them safe conduct back to Scotland to gather evidence for their case, since their ‘Markes, letters and paupires were embesaillez at the capture’. William was possibly born around this time, but no more is known of him at present, other than his land-holdings. Strathauchin.

A noted family of burgesses, notaries and financiers in Edinburgh at the time, generally taken today as ‘Strachan’. Elizabeth married George Dykson, above, Henry and his successor John (son of another John) hold wadsets over



Raperlaw and Inchecok lands, whilst Vincent Strathauchin’s protocol books have mostly survived, providing many references for this work. Dingwall, sir John.

John is believed to be the younger son (or possibly grand-son) of the William Dingwall of Kildun who was slaughtered along with seven-score other Dingwalls on the slopes of Ben Wyvis in 1452 by Munro of Foulis and others. In 1464, Thomas Dingwall, junior of Kildun, is mentioned alongside his brother John, and in 1466 Thomas junior is mentioned as heir to Thomas Dingwall, subdean of Ross (and treasurer of Caithness 1448-1454), who died by 1477 and was likely brother to the murdered William. [A previous William de Dingwall was subdean of Ross 1371 and Dean from 1372-89]

A John Digwell or Digwaill matriculated in 1471 and graduated as

Magister from St Andrews in 1474, which could fit with his being conceived before 1452, but conflicts with his common appellation ‘sir’. [Thomas is succeeded at Kildun by his son William after 1507]. Sir John certainly comes by the Privy Seal ‘Gift of wards of all lands and annual rentis with mylnez & fishings’, previously of the late William Dingwall of Kildun, in 1527. This could refer to the William above, or to his grand-son William, who was also slaughtered by sixteen folk prior to 1531-2 and succeeded by another Thomas. If this Kildun laird, who does not appear with this designation until 1537, was a minor at the time of his father’s death c. 1527, this would account for the ward duties/rental returns being assigned to an adult member of the family.

In 1510, John is variously described as Notary Public and Master of the Hospital of St Mary in Tevidale, and on the 1st of January 1511-12, he is granted a Precept of Legitimation under the Privy Seal for his five bastards -- Henry, James, Katrine, Isobel and Jonet. In 1520, he reserves the life-rent of one of his Cowgate properties to himself and a certain Agnes Johneston.

By 1516, he is Archdean of Caithness, before becoming Succentor of

Moray by 1523, a position he is thought to have exchanged with Dunbar for the Chancellorship of Aberdeen, which post he held from 1525 until his death in 1532/3. He also held the post of Provost of Trinity College Church in Edinburgh from 1525 until his death.

During this time, he also appears as :- Dominus (sir), 1511, Rector of Olrik

in Caithness at 10 merks and of Kilteyrn in Ross at 20 merks in 1512, Rector of Strabrok in St Andrews Diocese, (c. 1524), Vicar of Wemyss (1531), Protonotary Apostilic (frequently) and one of the founding Senators of the College of Justice (1532), in whose records some Latin verses by Buchanan exist about Dingwall:-

Nomine Joannes Diguallis origine flamen Flamine natus erat, quem tegit iste lapis; E patrio censu nec nummo ditior uno; Scriptura primas accumulavit opes.



Sedulus hinc petri coluit mensorius urbam, Hinc tumor, hinc Gloria luxus, opes; Et velut hinc etiam traxisset stemmata gentis Ornatur titulis porma? superba novis.

As well as his extensive benefices, holdings in the Cowgate and the wards/rents of Kildun, John also had a pretentious mansion, dubbed ‘Dingwall Castle’, thought to lie close to or within the site of the old GPO building. [See Gordon’s drawing of Trinity College Church and castle ruins in his map]. He also managed to add the tack of Wester Lumphoy in Balerno (1524), the ‘principal messuagium, mansion, pomarium et hortum de Wester Strabrok’ (1524), assisted the annexation of the church of Dunottar to Trinity College (1525-6), claimed £10 p.a. out of the burgh of Edinburgh (1526), was granted wards and rents of Gairloch (1528), lands of Blaire in Fife (1529) and a parcel of rentals in 1531.

Treasury accounts also how him handling large sums of public money

due to various contractors; in 1512, Dingwall and William Monypenny pay £104 3s 6d to James Makesone for mariners’ wages for the month of June, then John pays another £78 3d for May’s wages (unentered before – one wonders why), £91 15s 6d to Johne Murray in Diep for mariners to bring a large consignment of timber from France, £40 (with Lord Sinklere) to two Falconers for their expenses going to Orkney & Shetland to obtain hawks, 20 French Crowns to the treasury ‘for the burse’, pays shipbuilding accounts and receives ‘six score uncis silver put in wed’ (pledge) to him. At 13/4 per ounce, this is another £80, although the sum of all the contributed silver in this transaction is out by £8 2s 6d in c. £114. One wonders what became of the balance. In 1513 he receives 44s 4d for ‘mending the Kingis granellis’ – meaning unknown at present.

He also appears as an auditor of the Treasury Accounts in 1516, 1524,

1527 and 1529-30, amongst other worthies such as Gavin Dunbar, James Kincragy, William Scot of Balweary, James (chancellor), Dean of Glasgow, Alex, and Abbot of Cambuskenneth etc. A modern accountant might shed some light on their accuracy! Given his propensity for spending others’ money (see below), it is quite possible that there may be some discrepancies, other than the one quoted above.

Whilst this extensive collection of benefices, rents, fees, wards, lands,

mistresses and natural offspring typifies the causes of the reformation, it is Dingwall’s later philandering that so incensed John Knox in his ‘History of the Reformation’, which portion is quoted in full below:-

“…..But here follows the most merry of all. Sandie Furrour, who had been imprisoned

seven years in the Tower of London, [found] Sir John Dingwall, according to the charitie of churchmen, [had] entertained his wife and wasted the poor man’s substance. For which cause, upon his returning, he spake more liberally of priests than they could bear, and so was declared to be accused of heresy, and called to his answer to St Andrews. He leapt up merrily upon the scaffold and, casting a gawmond, said,

‘Where are the rest of the players?’ Master Andrew Oliphant, offended therewith, said,

‘It shall be no play to you, Sir, before that ye depart’, and so he began to read his accusation, the first article whereof was – “That he despised the Mass”.



His [Furrour’s] answer was, ‘I hear more Masses in eight days than three Bishops there sitting says in a year.’

Accused secondly – “Of contempt of the sacraments”, he said, ‘The priests were the most common contemners of sacraments and especially of

matrimony’, ….and that he witnessed by any of the priests there present, and named the men’s wives with whom they had meddled, and especially Sir John Dingwall, who had seven years together abused his own wife and consumed his substance; and said,

‘Because I complained of such injuries, I am here summoned, and accused, as one who is worthy to be burnt. For God’s sake, will ye take wives of your own, that I and others, whose wives ye have abused, may be revenged upon you.’

Then Bishop Gavin Dunbar, named “Old Bishop of Aberdeen”, thinking to justify himself

before the people, said, ‘Carl, thou shalt not know my wife.’

The said Alexander answered, ‘My Lord, ye are too old; but, with the grace of God, I shall drink with your daughter or I

depart.’

And thereat was smiling of the best, and loud laughter of some; for the bishop had a daughter married with Andrew Balfour in that same town. Then the bishops bade --

‘Away with the carl.’ But he answered,

‘Nay; I will not depart this hour; for I have more to speak against the vices of priests than I can express this whole day.’

And so, after divers purposes, they commanded him to burn his Bill. And he demanding the cause, they said,

‘Because ye have spoken these articles whereof ye are accused.’ His answer was,

‘The muckle Devil bear them away that first and last said them.’ And so he took the Bill and, chewing it, he after spat it in Mr Andrew Oliphant’s face, saying,

‘Now burn it or drown it, whether ye will; ye hear no more of me. But I must have somewhat of every one of you to begin my pack again, which a priest and my wife, a priest’s whore, has spent.’

And so every prelate and rich priest, glad to be quit of his evil, gave him somewhat; and so departed he, for he knew nothing of religion.”

[This incident probably occurred after 1528, as in Knox it appears just after he quotes John Lindsay’s famous ‘Reek of Master Patrick Hamilton’ speech to Bishop James Beaton (see Hamilton of Kincavill tenement, below), and definitely before 1532/3, when Gavin Dunbar and John Dingwall are both dead.

It is not yet known why or when Sandy Furrour was incarcerated in the Tower, but from the vehemence of his outbursts on the scaffold, one might imply that his injuries were recently discovered, putting his imprisonment at c. 1520-4. It is also possible, however, that his imprisonment coincided with Dingwall’s siring of five natural children before 1511, and that he harboured a grudge against the adulterer for the next twenty years.

An Alexander Furrour appears in the Exchequer Rolls in 1503 in a batch of thirty persons, receiving 4 Merks each, and some 18 further repicients sharing £62, alongside familiar Cowgate/High St names such as Henry Alan (See Bish Dunkeld), William Fery, James Lamb, John Knox, and Perthshire names such as Charles Maxton, James Reidheugh, Murray(s) and John Strogeith . He appears again in 1507, when he receives £10 from the royal purse, possibly shared with another.



Considering the rarity of the surname Furrour/Ferrier in the first place, and both royally-connected Alexanders, they are believed to be one and the same. No more is kent of him, at present, but it is unlikely that a Scots ‘nobody’ would have survived seven years in the Tower. If they are the same, and the John Digwell who graduated in 1474 is identical with Sir John Dingwall, then both would have been of a decent age for their time in 1528-32. Furrour c. 50, Dingwall c. 80 years of age.

Andrew Oliphant was probably from the Kellie in Fife branch of the Oliphants (or their Linlithgow cadet branch), as all other recorded contemporary Andrew Os were known to be either dead by 1528/9 or married with kids. He graduated from St Andrews University in 1527, appears as a notary public in Linlithgow in 1534, was sent to assist Gavin Dunbar, Bishop of Glasgow (and nephew of Bishop Dunbar, above), in the trial of Russell and Kennedy 1539, Dean of Kinghorn from 1539-44, Dean of Linlithgow 1544/5, vicar of Invertig 1545, Dean of Fife (St Andrews and Crail) 1549, notary public & vicar pensioner of Abernethy 1549, confidential agent of Cardinal Beaton at Rome, then notary Public at Rome, in service of Archbishop Hamilton, 1553-4, and chaplain to Archbishop of St Andrews in 1560, when he is taken prisoner by the congregation. He appears in Edinburgh protocols in 1554 and 1563, handling large sums of money, such as ‘fifty double ducats’.

Gavin Dunbar (sen) was from the senior Dunbar branch, a son of Sir Alexander of Westfield in Moray. Graduating ‘master’ from St Andrews in 1475, he was Dean of Moray before 1487, Clerk of Register 1501, Archdeacon principal of St Andrews with a mansion in Edinburgh 1504-5, and Bishop of Aberdeen from 1518 until his death in 1532.

His nephew Gavin, a yr. son of Sir John Dunbar of Mochrum, was also St Andrews educated, then tutor to James V in 1517, Dean of Moray 1518, Prior of Whithorn, Bishop of Glasgow 1524, Lord chancellor 1528-43, Abbot of Inchaffray 1538, died 1547, after involvement with more heretical trials.

Furrour mentions ‘three bishops there sitting’; Dunbar is named, the presence of the incumbent bishop of St Andrews, James Beaton -- uncle of Cardinal David -- can be sensibly implied, the third bishop unknown.]

Be it Known to all men by these presents me John Strachey of St. Margarets Westminster Esquire Heritable proprietor of the Tenement of Land and others afterdisponed fforas : much as Mr William Adam Architect hath made payment to me of a Certain Sum of mony Which I Accept of as the full worth and price of the said Tenement of Land and others hereby disponed, wherewith I hold me well content Satisfied and payed, and discharge him of the same, Renounceing all Exceptions of the Law whatsomever proponable in the contreir for now & ever, Therefore witt ye me to have sold annailzied & disponed Likeas I hereby sell annailzie & Simpliciter dispone To and in favours of the said Mr. William Adam and his heirs & assignies whatsomever heritably & irredeemably, without any manner of reversion, redemption or Regress whatsomever all and haill that great Back Tenement of land back and fore under & above, with the haill vaults, Cellars officehouses Garrets, parts, pendicles & pertinents thereof within the walls and gavells of the same, with the yeards, Stable and well therein Lying on the Southside of the Cowgate of Edinburgh, purchased and acquired by the deceast John Wright Merchant there from the Incorporation of St. Mary’s Chappell in Edinburgh, and disponed to me by the heir & Relict of the said John Wright Conform to the Disposition thereof aftermentioned; Together also with the use of the well within the Closs, and the use of the Closs itself as it presently lyes, Effeiring to the said Back Tenement; The said Mr William Adam & his forsaids paying the half of what Expenses is needful for cleaning thereof, & furnishing Chains & buckets thereto, and for paveing, mending & Cleanseing the said Closs as oft as the same shall be necessary; as also an entry to westmost vault or Cellar under the said great Tenement through a back house belonging to the said Incorporation by the door on the Southside of the well within the Closs, The said Entry not to be above three foot in breadth, and the hight only of the first jesting and no further inward to the west than the door of the said Cellar or vault, With the benefit and priveledge also of three ish and entry to the said great Tenement of land abovedisponed from the forestreet of the Cowgate by the Common passage through the Tenement of Land belonging to the said Incorporation as the said Closs or passage presently lyes; Together with the Dykes of the sd yeard on the east, south & west as the Samen is bounded thereby; with the trees & bushes growing therein, The Sun=dyall, Rolling or Smoothing Stones built &

2d page Built and lying in the same, and entry thereto from the south; which great Tenement and others abovewritten are presently possest by Colonell Alexander McKenzie, The Lady Gleneagles & Christian Wylie, and are bounded betwixt the Tenement of Land Closs and yeard belonging to the heirs of the deceast, Thomas Hamilton of Olivestob sometime one of the Baillies of Edinburgh on the east, The Common wynd or passage leading from the College of Edinburgh to the high school thereof and Lady Yester’s Church on the south; The Tenements of land sometime belonging to the deceast John Wright Slaiter Burgess of Edinburgh and now to Alexr. Wright his grand & heir, and the Closs or Vennall commonly called Raplocks Closs on the west: and the Tenement of land & Closs belonging to the said Incorporation now or sometime possest by William Harper Vintner Burgess of Edinburgh & his subtennants & Mrs Johnstone Indweller there on the north parts: together with the haill parts & righteous priveledges & pertinents belonging to the premisses Declaring always that the two north gavells of the said great Tenement of Land hereby disponed joining to the Tenements of Land belonging to the said Incorporation on both east and west sides of the Closs are mutual gavells, and belong equally to the said great Tenement now disponed and the land belonging to the said Incorporation and the half of the said two gavells is only hereby understood to be disponed to the said Mr Wiliam Adam, and the other half thereof to remain with & belong in property to the said Lands belonging to the said Incorporation adjacent to, and joining with the said great Tenement now disponed as is at length mentioned in the Disposition of the premisses granted by the said Incorporation of St. Mary’s Chappell to the said deceast John Wright dated the tenth day of September one thousand seven hundred & nine years, registered in the Burrow Court books of Edinburgh the twenty first day of January next thereafter and in the Disposition thereof by Alexander Wright son & heir & Agnes Wright Relict of the said deceast John Wright In my favours dated the twenty sixth day of January one thousand seven hundred & twenty three years; To: :gether with all right title interest Claim of right property & possession as well petitor as possessor, which I my predicessors & authors or our heirs & successors had have or anyways may have Claim or pretend to the lands Tenements & others abovedis: :poned with the pertinents, or any part or portion thereof. Wright Relict of the said deceast JohnWright and the heirs and . . successors ane new Tenement of Land or dwelling house built by the said deceast John Wright upon the southwest end of the yeard hereby disponed, which has lights to the said yeard, and has the entrys thereof in the forsaid passage or way near the entry to the College, which new Tenemtor dwelling house is not hereby disponed: Provideing always that it shall not be lawfull to the said Mr William Adam or his forsaids to build or erect houses, walls, dykes or others upon the lands and yeard hereby disponed within eight foot of the walls of the said other Tenements belonging to the said Alexr. Wright lying on the west side of the Tenement hereby disponed so as the lights of the said tenements not hereby disponed may be always damnified or prejudged The said Alexander Wright and his successors being obliged by his Disposition to me, To put iron stanchers in the windows in the first storys of his said Tenements not hereby disponed, and he and his forsaids and their Tenents are thereby debarred and secluded from throwing out anything from their windows into the said yeard under the pain of being lyable in dammages as the Law directs: In the which Tenement of Land and others abovedisponed I bind and oblige me my heirs & successors (under the provisions, Declarations Exceptions and reservations abovementioned) to duly and validly infest & sease the said Mr William Adam & his forsaids, upon their own proper Charges & Expences, by registration thereof in the hands of the Provost or any one of the Baillies of Edinburgh for the time being, as in the hands of his Majesty superior thereof To be holden in free Burgage for the service of the Burgh used and wont, And for that effect I hereby constitute and ilk one of them conjunctly & severally my lawful & irrevocable Procurators to the effect underwritten giving granting & committing to them full power warrant & Commission for me & in my behalf To compear before the said Provost or any one of the Baillies of Edinburgh for the time being, upon the ground of the Tenement of land & others abovedisponed, any time lawful & convenient; and there with all due reverence by staff and baston as uses To resign surrender upgive overgive & deliver, Likeas I hereby (with and under the Reservations Exceptions provisions and declarations [signed] John Strachey

5th page To be made & granted to the said Mr William Adam & his heirs & assignies whatsomever heretably and irredeemably as said is in such due and Competent form as accords Acts Instruments and Documents one or more needfull in the premisses to take and raise, and generally to do every other thing thereanent that I might do myself if personally present; or which to the office of procuratory in such cases is known to appertain, obligeing me & my forsaids to hold firm & stable whatever my said procurators lawfully do or cause to be done in the premisses And moreover I bind me & my forsaids to releive and skaithless keep the said Mr William Adam and his forsaids and the lands and others abovedisponed from all Cesses, taxations publick burdens ground annuall and others whatsomever due out of the said Tenement of land and others forsaid at and preceeding the term of Whitsunday last past which is hereby declared to have been their entry thereto. And further I hereby constitute and ordain him and his forsaids my Cessioners and assignys not only in & to all and sundry the writes Evidents & securitys whatsomever both old & new of & concerning the Tenement & others abovedisponed and particularly, but prejudice to the said Generality In and to the Disposition aforsaid granted by the said Incorporation of Mary’s chappell to the said John Wright, Infestment thereon & obligement relative thereto for making the writes & evidents forthcoming, The Retour or Service & Infestment of the said alexander wright as heir to the sd John Wright, and the forsd Disposition granted by the sd Alexr. & his mother to me, with my Infestment thereon, and haill procuratorys of resignation, Clauses of warrandice and haill other clauses & obligements respective therein contained; with all that has followed or may follow upon the same for now & ever. But also In & to the rents maills and duties of the Tenement of Land & others abovedisponed from the said term of Whitsunday last past and in all time coming with all action & Execution competent, or that may be competent therefore Surrogating herby the dais Mr William Adam and his forsaids in my full right title & place of the premisses for now & ever. 6th page The said rents maills and dutys, and for Exhibition implementing & fullfill: : ing of the writes and Evidents aboveassigned; And generally to do every other thing thereanent that I might do myself before granting hereof Which Disposition to the Lands & others abovedisponed and assignations to the Rents and writes thereof above written, with the subjects themselves thereby made over & Infestments to follow hereon I bind and oblige me and my forsaids to warrand to the sd Mr William Adam & his forsaids from all facts and deeds done or to be done by me or mine in prejudice thereof allenarly. And in testimony of the premisses I have herewith delivered up to to the said Mr William Adam an Inventary of the writes of the saids Lands & Tenements with an Obligement on the end thereof for making the saids writes forthcoming granted by the Deacons of the masons and wrights of Edinburgh for themselves & in name of the said Incorporation of Mary’s Chappell To the said deceast John Wright. As Also the Disposition aforsaid granted by them to him & his seasine thereon with the said Alexander wrights Service Retour & Infestment as heir to the said John Wright his father (The said Mr Wm Adam and his forsaids being by acceptation hereof obliged to make the samen forthcoming to the said John Wright and his forsaids in regaird they Carry right to the new Tenement built by him and not hereby disponed, upon the said John Wright’s Obligement for redelivery when demanded. As also I have delivered up the Disposition aforsaid granted by the said John Wright & his mother to me with my Infestment thereon. To be disposed of at their pleasure in all time Coming. And for the more security I consent to the Registration hereof in the books of Councill and Session or in any other Judges books competent in Scotland therin to remain for Conservation or if needfull to have the strength of a decreet of registration of any of the said Judges interponed thereto that Letters of horning [signed] John Strachey

free ish and Entry as aforsaid by and through the said closs as a Common Area X Declaring nevertheless that it shall be Leisum and Lawfull to and in the power of the said William Adam to highten the gateway or Entry leading from the high street of the Cowgate to the forsd Closs and garden raising the arches of the North and South walls where the gateway is with the floor over the head of the said Entry & to Lower the pavement of the said Entry if it shall be found necessary by the said Wilm Adam so as to be ten feet and a half from the pavement to the rooff or ceiling of the said gateway whereby a Coach= =man sitting on his Coachbox may pass under the rooff such alteration being to be made at the Ex =pence of the said Wilm Adam He the sd also having power and liberty to levell and pave the Closs as he shall think fitt at his own Expences And I hereby bind and oblidge me and my

and his forsaids upon their own proper charges and Expences to be holden of his majesty in free burgade

Archbald Tod & Alexr Christie wry[te]r there Trusties for the Cre[ditor]s of Mr Joseph cave Brewer there To and in favours of the said Mr William Adams whereby for the Causes therein specified the said Doctor Robert Lowis Archbald Tod and Alexr Christie Trusties forsaid sold annailzied and disponed from them and the said Joseph Cave and his Creditors and their successors in office to & in favours of the said Mr William Adams his heirs and assigneys whatsomever heretably and Irredeemably all and Haill the houses and others under wrytten To witt a Brewarie a Brewing house Kiln and Stable sometyme fallen down as also all and haill the fore and back Closs with the free ish and entery to the said Brewing house from the wynd called Mellross or Robertsons wynd and sicklyke an well Malt Barn and Steep Lying upon the south part of that Tenement which belonged to the said Joseph Cave and a Chamber and two Lofts above the saids Barns and which were sometyme fallen down as the samen were possest by the said Joseph Cave & Lying & bounded conforme to the interest rights and Infestments of the samen Lying within the burgh of Edr. on the south syde of the Cowgate together with all right tittle Interest Claim of right petitory as possessory which the saids forenamed persons Trusties or the said Joseph Cave or his Creditors or his authors and predicessors had or any way might have to the said Brewarie Barns and others thereby disponed in tyme coming and that free from the servitude of the water pipe which sometyme ran from the well of the said Brewarie to the Garden belonging to the said Tenement But subject to the privilege granted to Mr Charles Sinclair Advocate purchaser of the Lower house and Garden of the said Tenement that he may carry up a stone Gavill consisting of two foot thick in a streight Line from the south wall or partition of the wester Closet to the east Syde Wall of the house fronting from Robertsons Closs & that from the ground to the Top if he thinks fitt The said Mr Charles Sinclair purchaser of the said Lower house and Garden always throwing a pend or two pends over the breadth of the Malt Barn so as the Malt Barn may not be encroached upon or prejudged thereby and the samen being always done on the said Mr Charles Sinclairs own Charges with this declaration always That the said Mr Charles Sinclair purchaser of the said Lower house shall be obleiged to support the Roof all the way above the Malt Lofts on the south and of the sd house and the other part of the said Roof which belongs to that house and the door or doors between the Garden and Brewarie are to be condemned on the Charges of the said Mr Charles Sinclair purchaser of the said Lower house Excepting always herefrom the Cellar at the south Syde of the Brewarie gate sold by the forenamed persons Trusties to Sir John Inglis of Cramond along with the higher House of the said Tenement with privilege to the said Sir John Inglis of Shutting up the door thereof within the said Brewarie and Stricking out a door to the wynd In the which houses Malt Barn Kiln and others thereby disponed with their pertinents the saids Robert Lowis Archbald Tod and Alexr Christie Trusties forsaid bound and obleiged them and their successors in office duely validly and sufficiently to Infest and sease the said Mr William Adams and his forsaids upon their own proper

The photographs by Archibald Burns (album of contact prints QYDA 1829.9 (866), shows the closes about to be demolished by the Edinburgh City Improvement Trust c1870/1 (neg nos 14457-14483). The album frontispiece contains a map showing the photographer’s view points for the 26 views, and the extract from the Trust Minutes recording the exhibition of the pictures in Feb 1871. They have been widely circulated and reproduced (eg by Edinburgh World Heritage Trust in the exhibition on the website by Linda Cairns). The original photographs are in album QYDA 1829.9 (866) 42374, which contains additional information on the subjects, and relevant quotations from Daniel Wilson’s Memorials of Edinburgh in the Olden Time . The National Monuments Record of ScotlandThe Threatened Building Survey team made a permanent record of the Cowgate/South Bridge site before it was cleared, and the photographic and other records are deposited in the NMRS. This included aerial photographs of the fire-damaged buildings, and views of 80-84 South Bridge, and Commercial Court, Cowgate taken 9 - 11 Dec 2002 (large series, including neg nos E 32675-96, general views of site, including north gable to Cowgate). The NMRS holds information relating to the 19th century on the following sites in the vicinity of the fire (earlier holdings have not been listed here): 1. Adam Square (NMRS No. NT27SE 3887, NGR No NT 2593 7339) (The Canmore

inventory Architecture Notes stated that Adam Square was “demolished for the building of South Bridge, 1785”. It was finally removed in the 1870s during the construction of Chambers Street). Adam Square historical reference file holds summary history.

Appendix 1.7 : Architectural Fragments A number of architectural fragments were noted within the surviving building fabric of the Cowgate Fire Site. These have been located on the ground plan below with a brief list and description. The worked stones show a continuum and reuse of previous structures within the fabric of more recent structures. It is possible to recognise a range of periods, from the roll mouldings of the 16th and 17th century to the distinctive droving tool marks of the 18th and 19th centuries. This is useful in providing terminus ante quems to certain elevations (like the southeast of Hasties Close) which appear much older than they actually are. This is not withstanding both the fact that most walls within the site are built on the lines of earlier boundaries and the incorporation (as with much of Building 13 – south elevations) of earlier fabric.
