Introduction

GNER (Great North Eastern Railway Company) is proposing to introduce the quickest ever journey between Edinburgh and London and Edinburgh and Newcastle.

Once approved, services would begin within 36 months and bring forward the journey time benefits of HS2 by nearly 20 years.

The key features of the GNER proposal are:

Ê An hourly service commencing in December 2018 between Edinburgh and London King’s Cross and calling only at Newcastle (a few peak trains will call at Stevenage).

Ê A regular journey time of 3 hours 43 minutes between the capitals, which is significantly faster than existing or other proposed services.

Ê Significant modal shift from air to rail, especially to and from Edinburgh, with a corresponding reduction in carbon emissions.

Ê Real choice for passengers between air and rail operators – offering competitive fares and a range of travel options.

Ê A new GNER Head Office to be located in Edinburgh, with over 250 new jobs overall, 140 of which are planned for Scotland.

Ê An investment of over £300 million from the private sector with no call on the taxpayer to finance or underwrite the proposal.

GNER intends to introduce a fleet of brand new, state of the art 9-car Alstom Pendolinos to the East Coast Mainline (ECML).

Each train will offer an exceptional on-board experience offering over 500 seats over a variety of classes to suit every budget.

Introducing these tilting trains will allow journey times of less than 3 hours and 45 minutes between Edinburgh and London and under 2 hours and 30 minutes between Newcastle and London.

These trains will be capable of speeds up to 140mph. It is a long held aspiration for the ECML to be upgraded to allow 140mph running. When this happens GNER’s journey times will be improved further.

These greatly improved journey times will offer a competitive alternative to domestic air travel and generate significant modal shift and pave the way for the introduction of HS2.

In addition to investing in a brand new fleet of trains, GNER will make a significant contribution to the rail network to allow the technology for tilting trains to be introduced.

Introducing a new rail service requires a significant new workforce in order for things to run smoothly.

GNER will create over 250 jobs in the UK with around 140 of these being based in Edinburgh with additional train crew depots in Newcastle and London.

Employment benefits alone are calculated at around £45 million per year.

With GNER, a seat is an integral part of the journey, but in the event that a seat is not available, passengers will receive a refund of 50% of the cost of the journey.

Tickets will be available for purchase on the train at normal prices without penalty, perfect for that last minute decision or unfortunate late dash for the train.

Each train will offer an exceptional on-board experience offering over 500 seats. Other on-board services will include:

Ê Free Wi-Fi throughout. Passengers in all classes will receive complimentary Wi-Fi with a premium service being offered in First Class.

Ê Excellent Catering. GNER will offer excellent on-board catering facilities on all services.

Ê Best in class Legroom. GNER’s trains will offer superior legroom providing a comfortable environment for all passengers.

GNER has identified safety, passenger satisfaction, value for money and accessibility as being the key elements of its service:

Ê Safety. The assurance that GNER takes the greatest care of our passengers and employees, meeting and then exceeding the same exacting standards that apply to all other train operators.

Ê Passenger satisfaction. A personal service that cares about everybody who travels with us. We want passengers to enjoy their journey, know they are important to us and come back again.

Ê Value for money. In a competitive transport market where travellers have choices we want GNER’s passengers to feel that the service they receive represents real value for money. Ticketing will reflect changing purchase patterns but passengers will also be able to buy on board without the financial penalties associated with many other operators.

Ê Accessibility. All our trains will be fully DDA compliant.
