Bugs and Technology Jessica ClarkPreschool: Science Plan

Lesson Summary:This lesson is designed to get children more interested in using different types of technology around the classroom. With preschool, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) defines technology as any tool; such as a magnifying glass. While I will use those types of technology in my plan, I also have incorporated other various types of technology that the children will see more once they are in grade school. This lesson entails the use of technology for matching, sorting, following directions, and working a computer.

Estimated Duration:This lesson plan will be broken into 20 minute intervals where the children will participate in these activities during small groups for the duration of one week.

Commentary: My approach to the lesson will be to set one specific technology activity out each day to let the children freely explore it and figure out how to use it. One challenge I anticipate is children arguing over tools.

My students are already interested in bugs so having a topic that interests them, along with new materials set out I feel like it will be easy to get them hooked in.

Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:

First 5 minutes: Introductory Activity- The students will be shown a magnifying glass and be asked what they think it could be used for.

Next 15 minutes: After the children have seen and explored the magnifying glasses, they will be asked to draw what they have seen on the drawing pad on the iPads. This will be the one technology activity out among the other educational activities. Day 2:First 5 minutes: Introductory Activity- The students will first be able to explore on the SmartBoard by touching it, drawing lines, and learning about how to navigate it.

Next 15 minutes: After the children know how to work and navigate the SmartBoard, the teacher will pull up the document with the bug pictures on it for the children to match. They will match them by using the SmartBoard to draw lines and connect the corresponding pictures.

Day 3:

First 5 minutes: Introductory Activity- The students will be shown the Bug Catcher Avatar who tell different facts about bugsNext 15 minutes: Students will be able to continue watching the avatar and there will also be books on bugs, both informational and picture books where they can look up their own facts with support from a teacher. Then they will be able to discuss what they learned.

Day 4:

First 5 minutes: Introductory Activity- The students will be asked how they can sort or classify bugs. After the teacher brings up the SmartBoard, they will show children that they can do it on the computer too. Next 15 minutes: Children will be able to use the computer and mouse to look at bugs and separate them into different types. They will also be able to look at new vocabulary words (thorax, abdomen, etc) and see them next to the corresponding part of the bug. Day 5:First 5 minutes: Introductory Activity- Teacher will show students QR codes and ask them what they think they are. Teacher will explain what they are and show the children how to scan them on the iPads. Teacher will explain that there are 5 QR codes hidden about the classroom and that they have to scan all 5 and circle the matching bugs that go with the QR codes.

Next 15 minutes: Children will be able to take the iPads around the classroom and find the different QR codes. Then they will circle the bugs that match each QR code.

Pre-Assessment:The best way to pre-assess preschoolers is to make a KWL chart (K-what they already know, W- what they want to know, L-what they learned). This is what I would do to pre-assess them to see what they already know about bugs and the technology they are using.

Scoring Guidelines:Preschoolers are not scored, but they are observed so their interactions with materials, technology, and each other will be logged and documented for things like parent-teacher conferences and later activities. Post-Assessment:After we completed the activities and discussions, we will complete the KWL chart with the what they learned part at the end of the week to assess what they took away from the activities.

Scoring Guidelines:After the activities are completed, each students successes will be logged into their portfolios for development.

Differentiated Instructional SupportDescribe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students: Some students may need a teacher to help them with each activity or even need a teacher to help them one-on-one and not in a small group. Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material: I could give these children less hands-on materials if that bothers them, or more if thats what they need. For example, if a child needs more hands-on materials and experiences then they can hold and look at toy bugs for the learning to be more concrete.

ExtensionFor an extension activity I would have the children create their own bug based on what they learned then we could take a picture of it and upload to the classroom website with its own QR code so they can show their family.

Homework Options and Home ConnectionsI would have the children either collect bugs at home or create a bug environment to share with the class. That way the parents are involved with what the children are doing at school.

Interdisciplinary ConnectionsThis lesson plan can be integrate into literacy, science, and math. They are learning new vocabulary, inquiry skills, and how to classify and group materials.

Materials and Resources:

For teachersI will need access to a computer to create the documents the children will use on the SmartBoard and computers. I will also need a computer and a camera to create the QR codes for the bug scavenger hunt and to create the avatar. For students
