THE HIV Incidents ProvincialSurveillance System Project (HIPSS)launched the pilot project of a three yearsurvey on HIV prevention and treatmentin the UMgungundlovu districtmunicipality.

Epicentre is a dynamic company withaproventrackrecord indeliveringhealthprogrammesacross the country, with theaim of preventing health problems byimplementing educational programmes, developing policies and conductingresearch.

CEOofEpicentre,CherieCawood, saidthat HIPSSwould give some indication ofwhether or not these interventions werelikely to reduce the number of new HIVinfections.

HIPSS is funded by the AmericanCentres for Disease Control and Preven-tion (CDC) which aims in assisting non-governmental and community-based or-ganizations working with HIV.

“The HIPSS study provides an impor-tant opportunity to study the effects ofplannedinterventionsonHIVincidentsina province that is affected by the HIVepidemic,” saidNancyKnight,CDCSouthAfrica’s country director.

The HIPSS project involves workersfromEpicentre visitingpreviously identi-fiedcommunitiesandconductingtestsonparticipants.Theinformationisrecordedon a tablet and immediately imported toa resource centreandstored foranalysis.

“There isnoconcernabout theprivacyof results should the tablet get lost, as allinformation is exported immediately offthetabletintotheresourcecentre.Partici-pants are not registered by name butrather identified by their fingerprint soprivacy is at a high level to ensure thattheir status is not public information,”said Cawood.

The survey currently includes 10 000peoplewith a followup selecting 7 000 ofthe original participants 12months laterto determine if their education on HIV/Aids has been successful as well as whathas influenced new cases of HIV.

TheprojectbeganintheVulindlelaandGreater Edendale areas in July this year.

Cawood said that they have receivedgreat reception and participation fromthe communities involved. She addedthat each household head and partici-pants would be referred to clinics to ac-cess health care needed.

In addition, they would have immedi-ate access to all the laboratory resultswhich will be immediately linked to careand support.

“The difference with this research isthat it occurs in real time so people don’thave to wait months for the informationto be analysed, they get results immedi-ately,” said Cawood.

Speaking at the launch David Khany-ile,HIPSSprogrammemanager, said thatalthoughtheprogrammemaybe restrict-ed to certain areas, he hoped to make animpact on human lives through HIPSS.

“If the project is successful in the pilotarea, UMgungundlovu, then there ispotential for it tobe rolledout throughoutthe province and possibly across thecountry,” said Khanyile.

THE Cancer Association of South Africa(Cansa) has categorically refuted therecent statements by TimNoakes regard-

ing the toxicity of Canola Oil, and his appeal tothe public to avoid it.

Cansa has, for many years, encouraged itspatients to use Canola Oil and promoted it as ahealthy lifestyle choice.

Cansa head of research, Carl Albrecht, saidin the statement that there has not been a singlecrediblereportworldwidethathasfoundCanolaoil to be toxic and unfit to consume.

“Cansa respects the Food Safety Division ofthe National Department of Health who hasneverissuedanywarningconcerningCanolaoil, nor has any other similar body in the world.”

Albrecht added that the department hadapproved the Cansa “Smart Choice’ Seal on allCanola products in 2011.

Noake’s book, The Real Meal Revolution, states that Canola oil was considered to be toxicand should be avoided. Cansa, in response, hasissued a statement that Canola is the smartchoice and have awarded the Cansa ‘SmartChoice’ seal to all Canola oil and Canolamargarine brands (produced from SouthAfrican grown GMO-free Canola) for more thanten years.

Lisa Strydom, regional manager of Cansa, said that Canola oil has a number of well-re-searched and documented advantages overother oils.

Strydom explained that some of the benefitsof Canola oil includes that it has a lower level ofsaturated fat than any other cooking oil and is

free of both cholesterol and trans fat. It also hasan excellent ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 (2:1)which has been shown to be optimal for goodhealthandhasahighersmokingpointthanmostother oils, so can be safely heated to highertemperatures which results in less oil retentionin food, especially when deep frying.

“In terms of the Noakes claim that the oil istoxic, Canola oil has been rigorously tested overseveral decades by a number of authoritativescientific bodies internationally, including theUnited States, Canada, New Zealand, Australiaand South Africa, and found to be suitable forhuman consumption,” said Strydom.

An analysis of peer-reviewed literature hasinformed Cansa that there is a good balancebetweenomega-6andomega-3fattyacidsfoundwithinCanola oilwhich couldhelp to reduce therisk of cancer.

“While both omega-3 and omega-6 areessential for normal functioning, our bodiescannot produce them, so theymust be obtainedthrough the diet. However, research has alsoshown that toomuch omega-6 can increase therisk of some cancers, while omega-3 can lowerthe risk, hence the need to balance theseappropriately,” said Strydom.

In order to find out what the trans fatssituation was in South Africa, Cansacommissioned a number of studies.

Trans fats were measured in 40 differentmargarines by the Council for Scientific and In-dustrial Research (CSIR) in SA.

According to the Cansa report, not a singlemargarine showed trans fats levels above twopercentbeing the legal limit for food inSouthAf-rica.

In addition, CANSA requested a senior lipidscientist at a SouthAfricanuniversity to analysevarious Canola oil samples for trans fats andfound that the amount of trans fats was belowone percent in crude, purified and commercialCanola oil.

The report added that in South Africa, theamount of trans fats in the Canola oil analysedforCansa, inSouthAfrica, iswellwithinthe legallimitandcannot, accordingtologicandscientificanalysis, be called toxic.

“There’s no credible evidence from anysourcewhatsoever thatSouthAfricanCanolaoilis toxic.

“If therewas, we’d expect the Department ofHealth, Food Safety Division as well as thesupermarkets, to immediately remove Canolaoil from the shelves,” said Albrecht.

Cansawill continue to recognise and supportlocal Canola oil and Canola margarine with theCansa ‘Smart Choice’ Seal as it has done formany years.

Municipalemployeesbreak roadrules

NQOBILE MTOLO>>[email protected]

DESPITE the adoption of theMsunduzimunicipality’s new fleetmanagement policy in 2012, themunicipality is repeatedly facedwith municipal employees whospeed and break parkingregulations while using councilvehicles.

All municipal departmentswere informed of the contents ofthepolicyandconsequencesofnotadhering to the policy

The recent report on the statusof outstanding traffic fines formunicipal vehicles states thatthere were 75 speeding fines andtwo parking fines issued out toMsunduzi employees while usingcouncil vehicles between July lastyear and January this year.

These fines add up to R26 700.The updated report is expected

to be tabled at the ExecutiveCommittee (Exco). In a reporttabled at the previous Excomeeting, more than six councilvehicles on various occasions hadtraffic offences.

Municipal manager MxolisiNkosi said that a former proxy forthe municipality, who resigned inJuly this year, continues to be

bombardedwithall traffic finesformunicipal vehicles. Ingeneral, thetrafficauthoritiesissuetrafficfinesof all registered council ownedvehicles in the name of the proxyof the municipality.

ExcomemberJudithLawrencesaidthatasidefromthepaymentofthe traffic fines, further actionshould be taken against offendingdrivers.

“They are not learning theirlesson.Shouldwe imposeourownfine against them for bringing themunicipality into disrepute?”asked Lawrence.

The report on outstandingmunicipal traffic fines states thatwhen the municipality was underadministration, the processes onidentifying offending municipaldrivers did not occur and this ledto an accumulation of the trafficfines at the fleet managementoffice.

According to the Road TrafficAct, the municipality will not beresponsible for making paymentsdue to trafficandparking infringe-ments. Municipal employees arealso expected to ensure that thevehicles they use are in a road-worthy condition because if thatdoesnothappen, theemployees inpossession of the un-roadworthyvehicle will be responsible for thepayment of the traffic finesimposed.

With some municipal driversnotpaying their traffic fines, someof the fines issuedwill develop intowarrants of arrest against certaindrivers.

“Aspartofdealingwith that, weare recommending that alldepartmental heads use tripauthority sheets to identify all theparticularsofthedriverswhowereresponsible for the cars when

these tickets were incurred. Fleetmanagementmust keep a registerwhere all incoming trafficcontraventions can be recordedand then disseminate these trafficfines to relevant departmentalheads concerned to obtain fullparticulars of the offending driv-ers.

“The responsibility to applyfor corrective measures againstthe defaulting officials whohabitually commit traffic offenceswhilst driving council vehicleslies with the business heads fortheir respective departments,”said municipalmanagerMxolisiNkosi.

Sustainableprogrammes forpeople withdisabilitiesNQOBILE MTOLO>>[email protected]

THE Msunduzi Municipality is working on plans tointroduce sustainable programmes for people livingwith disabilities in the Msunduzi area.

These programmes have been proposed by themayor’s office for the mayoral special projects.

Speaking at the Executive Committee (Exco)meeting, municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi saidthat in the past, the programmes on people livingwith disabilities were eventbased and thesuggestion was that they have more sustainableprogrammes.

Some of these programmes include training, business support, agriculture and educationalprogrammes.

Exco member Jabu Ngubo said that the item islong overdue and that when it comes to employmentopportunities, the municipality should also considerfulfilling mandates of the employment equity byhiring those people who live with disabilities.

“We should try to look at more than the ExpandedPublic Works Programme (EPWP) programmes andCommunity Work Programme (CWP) programmesfor their employment so that we can do a dent in thetwo percent that is a requirement,” she said.

NICOLE JOHN>>[email protected]

YOUTH For Christ (YFC), staying true to itsmission to bringhope to children and youth inand from disadvantaged communities, hassuccessfully reunited a disabledman living onthe streets for many years with his family.

Speaking to Echo, Simphiwe Sithole YFCoutreach coordinator said that during theirrounds visiting various street children inPietermaritzburg, twoYFCinternsdiscovereda man living on the street near MysoreRoad.

Sithole said that it was clear that the man,who is said tobe inhis30’s andwhose identitywill remain anonymous, was mentallydisturbed and in a critical condition, butwanted to be reunited with his family.

After intervention from the YFC team,Sithole managed to find out that the man’sfamily lived in Mafakatini in Elandskop, butthat his brother worked as a taxi driver in thecity.

Sithole said that the team visited the taxirank in town and spoke to various taxi driversand conductors.

“They were so helpful. Some of them evenstopped working and helped us find thebrother,” said Sithole.

Afterenlisting thehelpof therankmanagerto help him, Sithole and his team weresuccessful and located the brother.

“He is now back home with his family andis happy to be off the streets.”

According to Sithole, the brother andgrandmother both thought that their lovedone had died because he had been living onthe streets for many years.

He was also able bodied when he left hishome and was involved in an accident whileliving on the streets which rendered himdisabled.

He added that even though the man hasbeenreunitedwithhisfamily, theworkforYFChas only just begun.

“We want to continue counselling him andhis family, firstly to help them adjust to hisdisability and secondly to help him apply forhis ID so that he can start collecting a grant,”said Sithole.

Sithole placed on recordhis sincere thanksto Azgar Mapenye, Nse Lami and rankmanager Xolani Ndlela for assisting YFCwiththeir reunification process.

A call to fight thescourge of hunger

ECHO REPORTER

INabid to urge the government, companiesand individuals to help end the scourge ofhunger, Oxfam, an international organisa-

tion will host a campaign on food and climatechange at the Imperial hotel next month.Oxfam is a global confederation of 17 affiliatesdedicated to fighting poverty and injusticearound the world.

According to research, one in fourpeople inSouth Africa face hunger and the number ofchildren who are stunted due to hunger hasincreased to over 25%.

“Governmenthasa foodsecurity strategy inplace and it is in the process of being updated, but it is clearly not enough. In order to addressthe problem, we need stronger policies andpolicy implementation.

“Wearelookingfor peopletoworkwithwhocan help expose the scandal of hunger,

encouraging outrage, stimulating discussionand finding solutions to eradicate it. Climatechange now poses the greatest threat tohunger, with 50millionmorepeople predictedtogohungryby2050if it isnotaddressed,”saidmedia liaison officer of Oxfam PhilisiweMthimkulu.

Further to research, it hasbeenestablishedthat women and female children are the onesaffected by hunger the most.

Despite doing the same jobswith theirmalecounterparts, they earn less than them and asa result, struggle to put food on the table.

“Most women are breadwinners, and itbecomes even more of a burden when theyhave to take care of family members affectedwith theHIV virus as theyneed to havemoney. In order to fight this scourge, governmentpolicies should focus on creating moreemployment opportunities and increasingagricultural produce,” ended Mthimkulu.

THE PEUGEOT 308 and 308 SW have seencommercial success with 146 000 unitsordered by the end of August.

Following this excellent performance, the308 range welcomes two dynamic newversions andonbothHatchbackandSWbodystyles.

Behind the wheel of these new versions, whether the GT 205 or GT 180 fitted with the1.6-litre THP 205 Stop&Start six-speedmanual and the 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 EAT6engines respectively, drivers will appreciatetheremarkableperformanceofthesevehicles.

The rangeof colours for the308GT includethe new Magnetic Blue.

To deliver maximum enjoyment, the GTmakes the most of a chassis with specificsettings and high performance engines.Engineers used all of the brand’s expertise toachieve a remarkable power toweight ratio ofjust 5.85kg/hp for the petrol 308 GT.

Acceleration from0 to 100km/h, takes thepetrol 308 GT just 7,5 seconds.

The four-cylinder 1.6-litre THP 205Stop&Startengineisspecifiedwithasix-speedmanualgearboxtomakethemostofits285Nmof torque, available between 1 750 and4 500rpm.

This diesel engine is coupled to an EAT6automatic gearbox. It uses Quickshifttechnology for fastgearchanges, aswellas theabilitytodown-shiftautomaticallytothespeedrequired rather than in sequential order.

Furthermore, its efficiency is almost thesame as for amanual gearbox due to reducedinternal friction and the use of torqueconverters appliedwhenever needed to avoidtransmission slip.

Performance of this level demands aneffective braking system and this is providedby a Bosch 9CE central unit distributing thebraking effort between the four discs. At thefront, the 330mm diameter and 30mm thickdiscs are gripped by floating calipers with60mm pistons. At the rear, the discs are268mm diameter on 308 GT and 290mm on308 GT SW.

Both engines types have switchable ESP asstandard.

Training effectivelyITSEEMSthatwedonotappreciatetheimportance of correct training in thedevelopment of footballers.

There is too much emphasis oncompetition, hence very little progresshas been made in the last few years.

Training that does not considerspecificity and complexity of the gameis likely to delay the progress.Movements,decisions,actionsetc. aretriggered by the ball.

Presently, the majority of playersare subjected to simplistic trainingdaily. It is noted, for example, thatmany footballers still engage in longhours of intensive, plain running. Thisdoes not help to optimise players’performance in actual gameconditions.

Endurance in football is affected bymany factors, including mental tasks, technical executions, field conditions, weather, opposition etc.

Factors of performance should not

be trained separately if developmentand performance is to improve.

The level of performance at whichaplayerwillperformismainlydecidedby the degree at which his develop-mentwas accomplished. The relevan-cy and quality of training received atperformance level is very important. This poses challenges for footballcoaches to improve their professional

skills of training and coaching. We therefore need honest answers

to this question: Are South Africanfootball coachesequippedtoempowerand train local footballers effectively? Are we equipped to plan trainingprogrammes that addresses cognitivecomponents?Modernfootballtrainingshould train perceptual ability, attention, concentration, emotion-control and motivation. The modernfootball coach should be more of abrain trainer than a great motivator.

Generally, our players’ lack ofperipheral vision affects their tacticalplay. It is important therefore thatcoaches empower themselves withknowledge and skills to developspecific and complex football trainingsessions.

Thiswill ensure thatour footballersareonaparwiththeirpeersfromotherparts of the world.

MultiChoice to educate players to use money wisely

DAYS of uneducated players, senseless andunwise spendingofcashandfailuretoplanforthe

future is to be a thing of the past inSouth African professional football.

The newly launched MultiChoiceDiskiChallenge, underthePSLwing, issurely going to take local soccer andplayers’ future education to anotherlevel.

According to the official sponsors, the MultiChoice Diski Challenge’smain aim is to transform theway localfootball players approach the gamefrom a young age.

The league is mainly for playersunder the ageof 23,with threeplayersover the age of 23 allowed per team.

PSL chairman,Dr IrvinKhoza, saidthat the emphasis was on developingyoung players for the future.

“Development in this country is avery big problem. Precision, qualityandpossessionaresomeof thebiggestchallenges facing our youngsters,” hesaid.

Khoza also emphasized theimportanceof teaching youngsters lifeskills and money managementamongst, other things.

“We will also teach young playershow to manage their finances and lifeskills. We realised that the life of a

footballer is12yearsandifaplayerdidnot create his legacy during thatperiod, he will have a problem in thefuture. These youngplayers get a lot ofmoney and they waste it because theyare not taught how to spend it wisely,”explained Khoza.

Pietermaritzburg developmentcoach, and former AfricanWanderersand AmaZulu player who is also ateacher at Mehlokazulu secondaryschool, Zeph Mthembu says that todevelop a fully professional and wellversed player about life skills, careerand future is a long term process.

He fully agrees that soccer is a shorttermcareer andplayers need to investwisely during their playing days.

“A human body is not designed toplayforeverandyourfutureasaplayeris something else. You have got toinvest from day one. Projects such astheMulti-Choice Diski Challenge needto be encouraged and we need to seemore companies coming on board,”said Mthembu.

Togivea taste tosoccer fansofwhatis in store for them, the first officialfixtures of the Reserve League tookplace at Durban’s King ZwelithiniStadium last weekend.

Most of the PSL giants also gavetheir fringe players a chance to play.

The Orlando Pirates team wascoached by Augusto Palacious. TheMighty Bucs were able to outwit theiropponents of the day AmaZulu 1-0.

Another PSL giant, Kaizer Chiefs, were guided by their former starmidfielder Donald “Ace”Khuse.Amakhosi were also able to edge outMaritzburg United via a penalty.

Fireworks expected at MTN8 finalTHE scene is set for two of

Mzansi’s football giants,Orlando Pirates and Kaizer

Chiefs, to battle it out at the MosesMabhida Stadium in the MTN 8 finalon Saturday night.

The Wafa Wafa grand finale willnot only give football loving people achance to witness one of the bestmatches of the season, but there isalso going to be a lot at stake.

AmaBhakaBhaka and Amakhosiare the traditional-arch rivals and itis alwaysabout thebragging rights toprove who is actually the best in SAsoccer.

Whatever thedifferencesbetweenthe twogiants, theywillbothhave thechancetosortitoutonthefieldofplay.

This week, both coaches agreedthat it will be a tough assignment forthe sides.

Bucs head coach Vladimir “VV”Vermezovic told Echo that he wasworried when his team playedagainst Bidvest Wits last weekend atOrlando Stadium. Although Pirates

managed to win 1-0 against theClever Boys, VV felt the final wasalready in his players minds.

“Ithoughtitwasalwaysgoingtobedifficult to beat the same team for thethird time. I then realised that theMTN final was already in themind ofmy players,” he said.

Vermezovic praised his side for

beating the Milpark based outfit andmade it clear that he is not makingexcuses before the derby.

He said that on Saturday, history, recordsorstatisticswillbethrownoutof the window.

“In a game like this, it does notmatter what happened the last timewe met or what the was score three

months ago. To me it will be anotherday, game, competitionand trophy. Itwill be tough for both teams,” heemphasised.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter saidthat followers are in for an excitingand fast flowing game.

Baxter also said that both teamsare currently playing good football,

are on form and are expected toproduce quality soccer.

“I predict a good day of soccer, fireworks if you like, but it won’t be astroll in thepark for eitherof us,” saidBaxter.

Pirates captain, and long servingplayer, Lucky Lekgwati said the teamthat will win on Saturday will be thefirst one to score because it will bedifficult to bounce back from beingdown.

“A winning team would be aperfect one, with less mistakes, whoisabletoscorefirstandwhoalsostaystightat theback for theentirematch.”

Former Chiefs ace striker PollenNdlanya said that the team that willwin thematchwillbeonewithnervesof steel.

“It’s all about amental toughness.Don’t allow your nerves to spoilyour game.

“If you are able to stay calm playyour normal game, everything islikely to be positive,” said Ndlanya.
