There are many reason why Khao Yai National Park, Nakhon Ratchasima province, remains extensively as a highly popular tourist attrac-tion. One factor is Khao Yai’s relatively close distance to Bangkok, with only a 2 hours car drive and you can leave behind the bustling traffic of the city, a chaotic lifestyle, and the never-ending workload, to leap freely into the arms of Mother Nature. Khao Yai National Park, Pak Chong district, is home to abundant tropical plantation and fresh air, including Tab Larn National Park and Wang Nam Khiao district close by, a tourist destination consid-ered as the 7th ozone-rich area in the world.

HOW?You can take 2 routes to Khao Yai, one from the Mittaphap Km.65, follow the Thanarat road for 23 km. The other route is from the Bangkok - Hin Kong Intersection, following Highway 33 (Nakhonnayok - Prachinburi), upon reaching Noen Horm Intersection take Highway 3077 all the way to Khao Yai. However the first route is more convenient, the second travels up steeper terrain. If you plan on taking the public bus, get off at Pak Chong district and hop on a 2-row mini bus infront of Pak Chong market which travels all the way to the front gate of Khao Yai National Park. Bus is available from 6.00 - 17.00.

October - February is the high season due to the changing weather which brings in cool breezes, the weather continues to drop as low as 22 degrees Celsius at lower ground and 10 degrees Celsius up at high grounds. The summertime from February - May brings in hot and humid weather, however the warm radiant sunlight does make you gleam fresher when taking pictures.

Nakhon Ratchasima is the largest province in Thailand, its name means “biggest boundary of the kingdom”, with a nickname “Korat” which is said to have derived from a distorted pronunciation of “Nakhon Ratch”.

Korat House

The Korat House is a raised platform 1-storey wooden residence, built from a readymade system for drilling, notching, carving, wedging, and doweling. The space is divided into 4 areas, the bedroom, balcony, exterior platform, and a kitchen, positioned to suit the colder winters and hot summers. Fried Noodles-Thai Korat Style

It might seem similar to the Pad-Thai, but the Korat Style incorporates special noodles from Korat that has a special vicious yet not mushy texture. You do n’t have to soak in water pre-frying, and a mixture of grind fish and fried pork is added at the end. The noodles are used in Phimai Noodles of Phimai district, Kra Tok Noodles of Chokchai district, Ta Ku Noodles of Pak Thong Chai district, Kud Jik Noodles of Soong Nern district, and fi-nally Chakaraj Noodles of Chakaraj district. Widely renowned in the Pak Thong Chai district, the silk is derived from traditional mulberry culture, silk worm cultivation, and Thai weaving style. Its outstanding feature is the quality of fabric that doesn’t lose its color and detailed patterns that from hand weaving, today it is popular in the country and abroad, especially the Squirrel Pattern, Jacquard style, Printed Silk, Marble Silk etc.

TRADITIONS & FESTIVALS

The Celebration of the Victory of Thao

Suranaree is an annual festival in Nakhon Rat-chasima province, held from 23 March to 3 April of every year at the Suranaree Park in Nakhon Rat-chasima. The festival celebrates the day that Thao Suranaree won the opponent, with a procession of the great local goods of Korat, ceremony to worship Suranaree, an exhibition of public and private agencies, local food festivals, competi-tions and entertainment for free over the course of 12 days and 12 nights.The Phimai Boat Racing Festival and Phi-

mai Travel Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday during the second week of November to the end of Buddhist Lent Festival. There are boat races of people from many different villages from Phimai district and neighboring districts. Boats are furnished with Royal grandeur, accompanied by the Boat Parade Contest. There is also the Phimai Travel Festival with a Buddhist King and Buddhist His-tory Parade, Buddhist Lantern Parade, and various cultural performances.

The Korat Songkran Festival is a celebra-tion of the fun for locals. It includes Songkran Parade Competitions, merit making ceremony, the pouring of water on elders to receive blessings held infront of the Thao Suranaree Statue, and concerts by various artists. The BBQ Festival @ Korat is the largest food festival in the Northeastern region. Grilled food lovers can meet a barrage of international cuisine which guarantees deliciousness. Also enjoy the concert of famous artists, a festival to truly fulfill the stomach and heart.

Noodle Eating Festival and Candle Parade Ceremony of the Chokchai District is outstand-ing for its unique candle casting and carving. The story of these crafts focus on the history of Buddhism and the Buddha to honor Thai tradi-tion and culture. Experience the atmosphere of the candle procession, merit making during the Buddhist Lent, and the Chokchai Noodle Contest famous for its soft and sticky texture. There is also an exhibition of local popular OTOP products available. Chinese New Year Festival in Korat is an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between Thailand and China with the Nakhon Rat-chasima Municipality hosting the grand event. Yai, and Pray the Guardian Spirit Festival is a fes-tival that gathers the knowledge of ancient locals from Korat. There are booths selling various goods from Korat, and interesting activities such as wor-shipping the Khao Yai guardian spirit, exhibition to commemorate Pak Chong’s history, the first theater of memoirs in the middle of Khao Yai, and OTOP products for sale. The Lumtakong Dam Fish Festival is for fish lovers. Merchants bring in fresh fish from Lumtakong Dam to sell in the area at Baan Ta Ngoy, Nong Sarai sub-district, Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima province.

• Haew Narok Waterfall is the tallest and most beaut i ful waterfal l in al l of Khao Yai National park. It is best to travel there during September- October of every year to witness it at its peak. 10am in the morning is the time when sunlight gleams most beau-tifully and rainbows appear to shine.

• Pha Gluay Mai Waterfall isn’t too steep, but along the way up travelers will witness various beautiful orchids, especially Whai Daeng orchids which b looms dur ing Apr i l . If you stroll a little more you will finally meet the refreshing Pha Gluay Mai Waterfall.

• Haew Suwat Waterfall is 25 meters high, mostly traveled to during the rainy seasons, but if you plan to visit in the summer, make sure to take a stroll right into the cave under the waterfall.

• Pha Diew Dai Viewpoint is a pathway to discover the abundant plant species of Khao Yai, some are economically significant such as Eagle Wood, and various bird species including the Hornbill, the Black Bulbul, the Racket-Tailed Drongo etc.

• Pha Trom Jai is located far from other travel destinations, it is in the vicinity of the Radar of the Royal Airforce and thus is very peaceful. Most photographers come here to take pictures of various bird species.

• Nong Pak Chee reservoir used to be a place where locals would invade inorder to grow chili and parsley. Orders for evacuation resulted in abundant food source for wildlife. There is an observation tower for travelers to enjoy watching as animals come out for food in the early mornings and evenings.

• Saisorn Reservior was initially called, “Moh Singtoh Reservior” after the Moh Singtoh mountain nearby. Later it was named “Saisorn” after Boonreung Saisorn, first and former chief of Khao Yai National Park. The reservoir provides a main source of water for both humans and animals.

• Viewpoint Km.30 is the last viewpoint before exiting Khao Yai National Park. Here you will witness a crowd of vast mountains in the distance, the one on your left is Lok Chang mountain that if the timing is right you will see a swarm of bats flying out of their cave, a misty black against the vast blue sky, searching for food.

I have been living here for 22 years, the area used to be unfertile land, and it took me 2-3 years to recover its quality. I tested the soil by growing crops, until it finally became the popular cold climate vegetable garden. This plot is my university, it is an institution of knowledge and wisdom welcoming others to come and learn.

I’ve been living here for 6 -7 years, it all started because I had to take care of my parents who have moved here. My brother also owns a resort here, later on he opened the Klang Dong Art Floating Market and I run a course on Lifestyle Folk Art there, which is now of interest to many.

Life is no rush over here. Now when I have to travel into Bangkok I feel a little suffocated from all the traffic. People always ask me why I don’t open a course in Bangkok, well I don’t think anyone can finish their course in a city like that.

The charm of Khao Yai is the fresh air. Those who love travelling to the mountain, love cool breezes, would enjoy this place. And it’s not located far from Bangkok, only a 2 hours drive compared to lets say Chaing Mai where you have to drive all day to get the same experience as over here.

I like to visit new travel destinations while living

here, see what’s new in town, so maybe I can adapt it to improve my own life. Here we help support each other for tourism benefits, before people think Khao Yai is a city of Cowboys, but now there’s much more variety.

เหตผลทดฉนรกปากชองกเพราะปากชอง เปนเมองทไมใหญมากนก ทนมความสะดวก สบาย ไปตลาดกไปไดงายๆ ไมไดอยไกลปนเทยง จนเกนไป อากาศกด อยทนเราไมตองเปดแอรเลย ผคนกเปนมตร ชาวบานอธยาศยไมตรด เมอง กยงไมเปลยนแปลงเปนหองแถวเลกๆ นารก

I’ve lived in Bangkok all my life, until 8-9 years ago when I moved to live in Pak Chong with my parents. With a love for cooking, especially Italian food, we decided to open this little restaurant.

Living here for a while has made me realized

that I don’t really want to move back to

Bangkok anymore, I only go back if there is anything mandatory, to buy ingredients for example. I want to come back and sleep here, when I wake up the weather is at 23 - 24 degrees Celsius, it makes me feel like life is so relaxed and good.

We live a simple life here, my family isn’t the kind that needs lights and entertainment. The air is always fresh and travelling is convenient even to Bangkok which is only 2 hours away, but the lifestyle is so different.

I love Pak Chong because it’s a small conve-

nient town, the markets are close by, the weather is excellent and there’s no need for air-conditioning, the people are friendly, and the buildings haven’t changed much, still the traditional small shop houses.

I grew up here but I was in Bangkok for some time for school and work. I felt kind of bored of Bangkok so I decided to move back and opened Hand Neramitr shop to sell postcards, bags, shirts, brooches, notebooks etc. at the Pak Chong market.

The location of my shop used to belong to a relative, the community here is tight. I’ve thought about opening a shop in other provinces but I realized that where I really want to be is back at my hometown.

The first thing I think about when you talk about Khao Yai is the fresh air. Before I never knew what it meant when people keep saying that Pak Chong had fresh air, until I was in Bangkok, then I knew right away what the difference between good and bad quality air was. I’m glad I’m taking in the air I breathe everyday.

Pak Chong locals still live the way they did in the past. We have dinner as a family every evening as locals here are not a big fan of dining out, most restaurants are for tourists. We are still family orientated.

I love it here because it’s my hometown. This might be something old people say, but I think everyone wants to live and die at the place they grew up in, just like me.

ครอบครวเราเคยอยกรงเทพฯ แตเมอคณแม ปวยเปนโรคหวใจเราจงอยากยายมาอยตางจงหวด ในททอากาศด สดทายเรากยายบานมาอยท ปากชอง และเรากเปดเปนรานกาแฟและราน อาหารดแลสขภาพชอวา Isaree Secret Garden ขนมาดวยเพราะเราเหนวาเรองสขภาพเปนเรองทสำคญมาก

ครอบครวเราเลอกมาอยทปากชอง เพราะวา อากาศด เวลาหนาวกไมหนาวมาก หรอเวลา ฤดรอนกจะไมรอนมากเพราะจะมฝนตกลงมา ชวยบรรเทาความรอน

เมอกอนไมคอยไดมาเทยวทนมากนก จำไดวาเคยมาเขาคายอยทเขาใหญ 2 ครงเทานนเอง แตรตวอกทกมาซอทปลกบานอยทนแลว พอมา อยทนชวตเปลยนไปโดยสนเชง มเวลาวางมากขน จากทเมอกอนอยกรงเทพฯ เคยขบรถไปทำงาน วนละ 3 ชวโมง มความเครยดเยอะ แตมาอยทน ไมตองเสยเวลาเดนทาง ความเครยดกนอยลง คณแมกอาการดขน หาหมอนอยลงมาก

เราชอบทน เพราะแนนอนวาอากาศกด อาหารกด คนทนกดมากดวย พอเราเปนรานทขนปายวาปลกผกปลอดสารพษและขายอาหารดแลสขภาพกทำใหเราไดพบเจอกบคนทมความสนใจเหมอนๆ กน

Our family used to live in Bangkok, but after my mother was diagnosed with a heart disease, we moved to live in a place where the air was cleaner, and in the end it was Pak Chong. We opened up a healthy coffee and organic restaurant called Isaree Secret Garden so as to emphasize on the importance of good health.

Pak Chong has the perfect climate, not too cold in the winters and not too hot in the summer with constant rain to cool down the air.

We don’t usually take trips to Pak Chong, I remember being here for a camp only 2 times. But before I knew it I was already buying a land here and building a house. Life has changed after living here, I have more free time as opposed to Bangkok because it took me 3 hours to drive to work. There was a lot of stress back in the big city, but out here there’s time for traveling, less stress, and my mom’s condition has improved now with less visits to the doctor.

We love it here because of the weather surely,

and the food is great, while the people are nice. When people knew that our restaurant grew organic vegetables, it seems that we have gotten to know people who are health conscious just like us.
